I have spoken to a couple of you regarding this subject, but because I keep hearing the same thing echoing from my side of the gender divide, I find it thread-worthy. I digress. This appears to go hand-in-hand with a top complaint coming from single Christian women: why won't guys step up and initiate? (Though that's a different thread altogether).

Growing up in a Christian home and being a mature Christian male, I have been taught my entire life that I need to be the pursuer in the relationship and indeed I must take all the risk. Personally, this is not a problem for me. As Christian men, we should take the risk fully knowing it is the woman's prerogative to say 'yes' or 'no'.

This is fine and dandy, but there is a 3rd option that women (especially Christian women who grew up in a Christian home) have a tendency to employ: avoidance. This has happened to me more than once, and I have heard the same general sentiment from men within the Christian community of this city.

Picture this as an example: A young man and woman from the same church congregation are familiar with each other. About a year later the young man prays about pursuing the gal, as he knows she is still single and has a heart for God. He finally gets up the courage to ask her out to brunch after the next weeks church service. Then is happens. The girl is friendly, kind, and even giggly in her response. "I'll have to check to my schedule and get back to you", she says. Days go by with no response. Days turn into weeks. She never responds. From then on, every young adult meeting and every church service contains an unspoken awkwardness and possibly animosity between the two. (Although, even if the woman does not respond, the man is still [/i]expected[/i] to be polite, but that's beside the point of this article).

Ladies, just check 'yes' or 'no'. Simply not giving an answer and hoping the question will 'go away' is not an option. It's inconsiderate, and here are a few more things to think about the next time a man honors you:

1) Be kind. - It is would be uncanny if a man were to ask you out on a whim. Chances are he has been doing his research and checking your 'resume'. (Pardon my comparison of spouse hunting to job searching). Regardless of how much research the man is able to do, it still takes a lot of courage to ask a woman out. Which leads to my next point.

2) Be respectful. - Presumably, the gentleman has taken the question whether to ask you out or not before God. However, when us men are interested in a woman it's not easy to get her off our minds. That's why it's best to ask sooner rather than later. That's the way men [should] operate- we do not rest until the matter is settled. (Sound familiar? Hint: Boaz). So be respectful. Regardless of your answer (yes or no) allow him the closure within a reasonable amount of time.

3) Be mindful. - Though this man may not be your husband some day. Statistically, I believe there is about a 90% chance he will still be a husband. If you are unkind, he is going to think twice about asking another woman and compare his experience with asking you. Perhaps this is a factor in why so many men are so hesitant in initiating?

4) Don't judge a book by it's cover. - The old adage still applies. Though you may know some information about the man, you may not know the pertinent information. I recall last summer a certain lass that I met through a friend. She was very friendly and kind. We were both at the end of a healing stage, she had an engagement broken off, I had suffered the sudden loss of my girlfriend. The girl and I came from very similar backgrounds, loved to travel, and had similar political beliefs. To top it off, we both gave praise to God. She looked past our age difference (she was 28, I was 22) and accepted my dinner invitation. We had a wonderful (and very long) dinner conversation. We discussed how God was working in our lives and how He was healing us from both our situations. Though we did not choose to pursue a relationship (she likes the Bills, enough said) after that dinner, through her tears and my humility, a friendship was formed.

In conclusion, women: I implore you to give the men in your life as much godly encouragement you can afford. The world is an evil place where men are generally able to get what they want immediately with little or no commitment. This is especially in the perverse secular realm of higher education where not only is selfishness accepted, but promoted. Let's work to revive the love and harmony God originally planned for us and bridge the gap of bitterness between genders.

Peace be with you.

 No comments?

In conjunction to the above. Ladies, the way you behave toward a certain gentlemen is probably going be discussed (if only briefly) with other men in his community. For example, if you are rude to one man in your church congregation, chances are the other men are going to hear about it one way or another. This would be enough for any man (including the handsome gentleman sitting in front of you during the service) to think twice about asking you out. Obviously men generally are not as close-knit as the female community, but that doesn't mean we don't talk to one another.

Ok, I will chime in here. I'm sorry to say this a-x, (mind if I call you that instead of 'alien'?) but your posts sound like whining in my opinion. I mean if a girl isn't into someone the best thing that person can do is get up, dust themselves off and start looking for someone new. Analyzing and theorizing and philosophizing about the way things "should be" won't solve a thing even if what you say is totally spot on. People are just going to keep doing whatever comes naturally to them. Sorry you got hurt, but save your own dignity and hold your head up and don't fret about it.

God bless.

"... do not fret--it leads only to evil." - Psalm 37:8

I'm sorry, but I disagree with the above comment (sort of). Yes, maybe men should "take the hint" and move on; but that doesnt excuse the passive avoidance of the woman. Regardless of whether we want to pursue the man, we should honor the masculine they have initiated with us. That is a good thing. It is a reflection if the Father when men initiate. As a consequence of the fall, woman are prone to controlling behavior. Avoidance is passive control. It's an attempt to take the head position. And it's not right. Woman was created to be receptive and responsive. Avoiding a response is not inline with the image of God that was entrusted to us.
Alien, I for one commend you for your pursuit. Its a demonstration the Fathers character. He pursues us. But women, He also responds to us when we pursue Him. Imagine your life if when you pursue God, He avoided you, cared nothing about your feelings, or just got on with life like you didn't exist.

Nice, very nice words.

THIS. Bitterness has been my downfall in the past. Relationships aren't a "try, try until you succeed" kind of thing.

Yup. I knew I should have kept my mouth shut like I was already doing.

I agreed with your post Zero.

there is only one God, there are like 3.6 billion women. so the Jordache quote doesn't apply.

When the right one comes around, we really shouldn't think too much about it and rather just do it. I think the problem comes when we dwell on our feelings too much and don't act. If we like someone, we should tell them honestly and sincerely that we do.

Oh Zero, your fine.

As for what the person said, yes, women shouldn't avoid the issue. However, here's another view point to consider. A lot of time men have made it very hard for women to say no, such as try to guilt them into dating, or keep pressuring them until they cave. Yes, this does happen. So, the next time another man asks her out, she may also be comparing her experiences with other previous men. See the picture. It's not all one sided. Both sides need to be respectful.

Also, sometimes women don't get back right away, simply because they have a lot of things happen in the week, so if they avoid the person, it could be because they were embarrassed about not getting back to the man. So sometimes, men should get the courage to ask again, and relieve the pressure by saying, hey, I realize you were probably busy and were unable to get back, etc. etc. Anyway, you get the point. If she does the let me check my calendar thing, then you know, she's avoiding you. If she says other things, like, hey, I can meet you at such and such time, then chances are she was really busy.

Don't just assume because a woman does not get back with you right away, doesn't mean she isn't into you.

This thread is not about me. It's purpose is to bring attention to this increasing trend in the Christian community among young adults.

You have reminded me of another issue though, sometimes women dislike to 'hurt' the guys by saying no. This is nonsense. In order to encourage Christian men to be men (and to respect women), women will have to learn how to say no. It takes courage on both parts. A respectful question deserves a respectful and timely reply. Avoidance by the woman will just confuse the man and possibly even encourage him to pursue further. If not, then ill, unspoken sentiment will surely reveal itself.

This is assuming there is a right 'one' for everyone, which is controversial. As for asking, you're right we do need to be honest and sincere. However, this thread is strictly about the receptiveness of the woman.

I see what you're saying. The whole point of this thread though, is to raise awareness that the 'avoiding' technique is wrong and explain why it is wrong. It is also wrong to make the man wait an unreasonable amount of time. If a man asks you out on a date a week from now, you shouldn't wait until the day before to give him a 'yes' or 'no' (unless you have a mutual understanding that that is when you will give him your answer). That's inconsiderate.

Alien, I'm not disagreeing with you on the avoidance issue. I agree, women should not use avoidance to say no. However, what I am saying is that there is more than one side to this issue.

I agree. I just don't want this to blossom into a thread about the other side. Christian men get ripped on a lot by Christian women when it comes to the initiating. I just thought it was time to interject and point something that I've been witnessing and hearing about out when the initiating is done and over with. You're right though, both sides need to practice respect and straight-forwardness.

So in conclusion both side are doomed to repeat if we do and doomed if we don't.

Are we all caught up now????

:D

it will get better if there is just better communication on everyones part

If a lady isn't interested in going out with someone, she should communicate this as soon and as politely as possible. If she IS interested, but truly needs to check her schedule, she should let the guy know the next day. That's just good manners.

There's no need to be unkind. It must be tough for guys to take that first step sometimes.

When I read your post and thoughts on this matter I thought they were very mature, masculine and God driven and I congratulate you. Many women incl Christian women love to harp on about mens faults re dating and passivity, and yet most think its sexist if a guy shares his grievances. I usually don't tolerate men who do this even though I agree with them because their tone is so nasty and bitter.
Your tone was clear, forthright and gentle and hardly whining in my opinion (and I can sniff out whining bitter sore losers a mile away).

Go for gold mate! You'll find the girl!

When I first met my husband, he said one of the best things he liked about me was how honest and straight up I was. So trust me, we do exist!

nb: Since marrying me my husband has also discovered that Im a compulsive sneaky fry stealer (whenever we go to mcdonalds), so we are still sinners at the end of the day! lol

Zero, Im not trying to offend you. I dont completely disagree with you. In fact my opinion is that of others here also. There are two sides to this coin. Yes, men should pick up and move on, but women also must be held accountable to their avoidance.
Liamson, I'm not sure I understand your ppint. Could you please explain why my quote doesnt apply? We are all called individually display the full character of God.

This seems like an irony.

If you look at other threads the women wonder why guys DON'T initiate a conversation let alone ask one to go on a date. Some women need to learn how to gracefully say no (whatever the reason is) without being offensive. This comes under the "being gentle towards one another".

zeroturbulence: sorry I don't agree with what you said.

Thank you for the encouragement! However, like I said in regards to Zero's comments, this thread was never intended to be about me. It is intended to bring awareness of this seemingly church-wide pandemic among singles in the church. My hopes for the thread was to also act as a catalyst for brainstorming different ideas as to how us men could encourage women to give straightforward answers after being asked out in an honoring/non-creepy way.
