When he was younger, Bobby was a great student in school. He was always on the honor roll and was well liked by all of his teachers. When he started high school, his grades were still good, but he was beginning to have problems. Learning didn’t come as natural as it once had. He still made the honor roll at the end of his first semester, but by the next semester he had fallen off of it. His parents took it in stride thinking that Bobby just needed time to adjust to high school since it was nothing like his junior high.
By the beginning of his sophomore year, his parents were confident that Bobby would do better. Bobby was still struggling though, and by mid-semester he was doing worse than the previous year. When he brought his quarterly grades home, he had 4 C’s and 2 D’s. His parents did not know what to make of it.
Later that night, Bobby’s dad went into son’s room to talk to him. He said, “Bobby, we don’t understand why your grades have dropped so much, but we will do what we can to help. I have decided to get you a new laptop to help with schoolwork and some new books that should help in your studies. Your mom also says there is an older student who would be willing to tutor you, and we will ask him to help. We believe in you Bobby.”
The semester progressed, and Bobby seemed to be doing much better in school. At the end of the semester, he brought his report card home for his parents to see. It was an amazing change. Bobby had raised his grades to 4 A’s and 2 B’s. His parents were excited and proud of him. Bobby’s dad later pulled him aside and asked what had made the difference.
“Was it the computer or the new books that helped?” he asked.
“Neither dad,” Bobby answered.
“Oh I see, it was the tutor we hired for you.” His dad responded.
“No, dad, it wasn’t the tutor either. It was you.” Bobby exclaimed.
With a puzzled look, his dad questioned, “Me?”
“When you gave me all of that stuff, you told me that you believed in me and that made the difference,” Bobby explained.
“But Bobby we have always believed in you,” his dad replied.
Through tear-soaked eyes, Bobby sobbed, “Until that moment, you had never told me so. Now I know.”
Words have power. Never be afraid or hesitate to tell people how you feel. How amazing it is that God has given us His word so we can continually see His love for us.
