Octopus has greater value then a man?

Those that threatened the diver are wrong but then again our whole society has become so vicious and hate filled recently.
 
Is it not a natural outgrowth of the 'official' view of the sanctity of human life?
I mean, out of all the people that would kill this person (who admittedly did a despicable act),
how many of them do you think would defend the unborn?

Elaborate on what you mean by despicable? I want to make sure I understand what you were meaning here.

Probably none of them would, since they value the octopus more then the boy.
 
I think it is despicable to kill any of God's creatures unless it's for food or self preservation-(they are attacking you).
If the octopuss was attacking him then it wasn't despicable.
 
As a diver I am aware that there are animals that like the human presence and in a popular dive spot they become like pets. So what this guy did was akin to spearing your cat for his dinner. I'm not sure death threats are appropriate but maybe it'll spur the local community to make the area off limits to fishing.
 
How many giant octopuses are out there?
I just don't want to see them to go the way of the dodo bird.
 
I live in the country, and we have deer all over on my land.
I think they use it as a sanctuary.
 
According to him, he was planning on using it for art and meat. Then he had to hit the octopus for self defense. Apparently the creature knows enough that it needs to protect itself. And quite honestly, I bet he did have to to kill it for defense. As for whether he was planning on eating it, that may be a different matter. And as for art, you can use a camera.

And Rick, no, it's not on the protected species list, and so probably not considered endangered. If it were, then he would have broken the law.
 
I read that same article and according to it, witnesses say he actually grabbed it and dragged it on shore and punched it in the head a few times to kill it, then he bragged on twitter about it and said he wanted to come back tomorrow and do it again.
 
yeah, i live in the Seattle area and we have more than our fair share of nut jobs out here.
having eaten octopus, i am not sure why anyone would want to, it is like chewing rubber!
but, hey, if he is going to eat it and he has the salt water hunting license, it is legal in this state.

(of course, as of today, a whole lot is now legal in this state!)

I LOVE octopus...especially in paella. I don't know what id do with 80 lbs of it though, I don't think seafood like that can be stored for a long time. Seems a tad excessive.

In my college days, I had a roomie who was the president of the local PETA chapter, heh, I suspect she disliked me a lot more than she let on. she would often leave the apartment if I was cooking meat, and I would find pamplets and stickers on my desk. I just don't take animal activist agendas seriously, not because I hate animals, but some of the marketing tactics are a little wacky.

Its not that they devalue human life so much as they have a huuuge, sometimes misplaced sense of compassion for animals. The death threats are not that unusual...if you google around for peta demonstrations, you can see for yourself where they often act out irrationally.
 
Nothing he did was illegal and its a shame that he is getting death threats. However I don't blame the region's community for being unhappy with his actions, especially if some of the stories about how he killed the animal were true. Threats are still going too far. I always feel a bit bad when an octopus is killed. They are extremely smart animals and for that reason alone I don't think that hunting them should be legal.
