Concerns with the use of Autopen
While the use of an autopen by the president isn't illegal, its appropriateness, especially for significant actions, is subject to debate and scrutiny. The key concern is ensuring that the president is aware of and intends to sign the document, regardless of the method used.
People need to understand that the President of the US might send out letters and invitations and other correspondence to thousands of people and so it is much easier if he simply authorizes those to be signed with the autopen. Yes, presidents have done this for decades. But signing legally binding documents like Presidential pardons of a few people has always been done by hand, Biden is the one and only President to do this with an autopen when he wasn't even at the Whitehouse. Everyone should understand the potential for abuse. You get a president who is not mentally competent, Reagan had Alzheimers and Biden had some form of dementia. Then the staff can continue on signing legally binding EOs and other documents without the knowledge of the president. This is the concern, especially since it appears this may have happened with the pardons.
