Here is a really good explanation as to why this is trickier than a regular flu.
"
Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..

H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery . And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next."
Now this being said, I know we have a good God, a big God and we do not need to despair, just be wise.

Agree, however just to clarify we have no inherited immunity/natural antibodies from our ancestors, we can, and do make our own antibodies once infected.

The thing is when we have antibodies already in our bodies passed down from our mothers our bodies are more able to quickly get to work to fight since it recognizes it as a pathogen.

On the mutation that can go either way .. it can diminish in strength over time too... so it does not have to be worst case scenario.
I actually do not think it has mutated and become more virulent, that was an internet rumor and there is only one strain, several places have mapped out the genetic sequence.

The real problem with this virus is there are many unknowns because China kept it under wraps for so long. This started in China in November and so for months people were travelling in and out of that country and when things went bad for them they still would not share what they knew about this virus.

The real core problem about this virus is the high transmission rate... high number of days it incubates before symptoms, and it has high enough mortality rate to be a concern.

What should actually be of a concern is our inability to handle a crisis like the Corona virus.

Compared to Spanish flu this is a non-event.
Wow

Tell that to the people who have lost loved ones or even a member of CC who has spoken of her own vulnerability.

I agree, and I am not trying to be cold or heartless. The thing is the human race is not geared for events like Corona, we go into fight or flight mode and then you walk into shops with nothing on the shelves.

My apologies if anyone felt my view was not appropriate.

I really appreciate this.:)

People's reactions and stupidity at the stores etc., are unfortunate indeed, I do not deny that.

:coffee:
Cannabis panic buyers were queueing round the block in the Netherlands to stock up on weed before a nationwide shut down. The Dutch government decided to lockdown the country on Sunday to stop the spread of coronavirus, and it sparked an immediate response from drug users. Queues steadily formed outside the famous ‘coffee shops’ – where cannabis can be legally bought – across the country. Some panic buyers waited all day to get their hands on supplies to last them through a quarantine that could last for weeks. All marijuana coffee shops were ordered to close by 6pm on Sunday, as part of comprehensive measures, which also affect saunas, sex clubs and sport schools.

For real time numbers go to the Florida DOH web page

https://fdoh.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/8d0de33f260d444c852a615dc7837c86

It provides Florida info by county, along with state totals. It also provides national and worldwide numbers that are updated as they are reported to the CDC.

The county numbers include the number of tests performed, the results of the test, and where those with positive results contracted the virus.

IMHO, Florida's emergency management system is one of the best in the world. I trust their numbers more than any other source.

2Corinthians 5 :1,7/8 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were DISSOLVED,we have a building of God,an house NOT made with hands,ETERNAL IN THE HEAVENS.
( For we walk by faith, not by sight)

We are CONFIDENT, I say,and willing rather to be absent from the body, and be PRESENT WITH THE LORD.

So, with so many threads on CC about this virus I dunno where to share this, so I'll just put it here.
We keep hearing of how the elderly are at risk and those with preexisting conditions.
I don't know many details about this one, as they are not telling much here due to privacy laws and all that stuff ; HOWEVER, an elementary age child in our area HAS BEEN CONFIRMED as testing positive.
They have yet to share the age, gender, or if there are any preexisting conditions for this child.
Prayers for this child and the family.

by the way -
just today our neighbor=friend told us about a local man that 'died' from the cv -
it was on the local news -
she also said that he had heart problems -
so far this is the only info of any one having the virus, and we don't really know IF this is true, but,
the local news put it out -
we live is a very, very, small community that is about to burst-out of it's 'safety-zone' -
highways-hospitals-home-depo's-chick-filets-lowes-WALMART!!! less than half a mile down the road!!!!
but, we're still in hang'in there and on the lowest point of being thought of for our 'road being paved'!!!!!!!
:):)

other news here, (gas is below $2:00 -
the shelves are mostly empty of 'paper-products, cans, disinfectants, and junk food' -

thankfully, I'm a 'germafode', for way to many years, guess it caught up with me and my old ocd days???....

Could be, interesting I had know idea that Canada supply’s 70% of the worlds maple syrup, I read an article from 2015 the price went through the roof back then and sort of the same thing happened could be because of that or want to sell it if production slows.
