Recently my dad and I were talking about the belief "Once Saved, Always Saved." It's a pretty self-explanatory idea. In his church, he was raised to believe that and he asked "So you're saved even if you later on renounce your faith?" The answer he got was that if that happened, you were never really saved in the first place.

That answer seems like kind of a cop out to me.

Anyways, what do y'all think about "Once saved, always saved?"
 
Your question is a very good one, the osas belief has always been a highly debated one. let's say that one accept God in their lives and say for the sake of the subject they have received salvation. Now the bible promises us that salvation is a free gift meaning there is no specific qualifications nothing that is mandatory other than believing Jesus died and rose again and that we as sinners need him and God's grace. Now as a new believer your heart is nowhere near what God wants it to be and you are like a baby who is brand new in the world, but you have recieved salvation now the question is what will you do with that salvation?

If it was really so hard to be saved then I wouldn't be saved either, when I was saved my heart was as black as charcoal. But salvation begins as a seed which anyone can have but it's about what you feed it and where you plant it that decides if it withers or grows into a giant tree. The foundation or soil is love and relationship with God that is the most vital thing for the base of any persons faith in God,the water and sunlight needed is the word of God and the time spent being with him and getting to know him all the while that love that is being infused into it all.

While a saved person who's tree shriveled on the other hand was not planted in such soil the soil it's planted in is dry and unhealthy while the one with love soil is soft and rich.
 
Once Christ saves He saves us...He never loses what He saves.
If it is YOUR salvation, then yes, it can be lost.
 
Heres an easier way to grasp OSAS, once you are possessed by The Holy Spirit, you are permanently possessed by The Holy Spirit

John 10:27-30

Both Paul and Jude gave us the OT example of those saved out of Egypt that then returned back to idol worship in warnings when discussing salvation.

When you read back in Exodus we will see not only were they killed, but Exodus 32:33 says they were blotted out of the Book of Life.
 
The way we come to Christ is the way we live the rest of our lives in Him....

Colossians 2:6-7 (NASB)
[SUP]6 [/SUP] Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
[SUP]7 [/SUP] having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

How did we come to Christ?...it was all His grace through us having faith in Him.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NASB)
[SUP]8 [/SUP] For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
[SUP]9 [/SUP] not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

All your sins have been forgiven.

Colossians 2:13 (NASB)
[SUP]13 [/SUP] When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,

We cannot "perfect" ourselves by our own self-salvation....us "doing" things to keep our salvation....it is all by faith in Christ.

Galatians 3:3 (NASB)
[SUP]3 [/SUP] Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?

When you believed..the Holy Spirit came and sealed you for God.

Ephesians 1:13 (NASB)
[SUP]13 [/SUP] In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Jesus said.." I will never leave you nor forsake you."

No one ( including yourself ) can take you from Jesus and the Father's hand.

John 10:28-29 (NASB)

There are those that say ...You must "do" things in order to keep your salvation. They will scare you with "conditional verses"..If..might, may..but they are just language structures.

Wheh you know you are safe and learn about the love and grace of God in C hrist...you will follow Him and fall in love so deeply that you will be full of joy..even in the midst of trails. He is always there for you. Trust Him..

...so..growing in Christ and His grace and knowledge will keep you strong in Him in this world and reap great dividends for you.

2 Peter 3:18 (NASB)
[SUP]18 [/SUP] but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
 
There are many verse in the bible that talk about walking after the flesh and reaping death in this life but when you die because of stupidity ...this does not mean you lose your salvation. You will still go to see Jesus..just a lot quicker!

We are perfected forever in Christ.

Hebrews 10:14 (NASB)
[SUP]14 [/SUP] For by one offering He has perfected ( our identity ) for all time those who are sanctified. ( our behavior )


We are perfectly sanctified in Christ now....very true....we as an identity the new creation in Christ will never be more holy....however there is a "sanctifying" of our behavior that is on-going that reflects our true nature in Christ...so in essence...we are becoming outwardly who we really are in our inner man which is in Christ.

God sets apart ( sanctifies )our attitudes and actions outwardly but you are 100% set apart ( sanctified ) as a person..the real you in your inner man..the new creation in Christ.
 
The sower of the seed parable is what I was trying to explain

13 That same day Jesus left the house and sat down by the Sea of Galilee. 2 The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat. He sat in the boat while the entire crowd stood on the shore. 3 Then he used stories as illustrations to tell them many things.

The plants sprouted quickly because the soil wasn’t deep. 6 But when the sun came up, they were scorched. They withered because their roots weren’t deep enough. 7 Other seeds were planted among thornbushes, and the thornbushes grew up and choked them. 8 But other seeds were planted on good ground and produced grain. They produced one hundred, sixty, or thirty times as much as was planted. 9 Let the person who has ears listen!

[SUP]33 [/SUP] The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. "

This does not say the Book of life. The scriptures take about many books. It doesn't say what the book was back then when the Lord was speaking to Moses.

if we take that scripture just by itself....none of us will be in this book ( whatever it is )..because all of us have sinned.
 
I hope she doesn't become confused by the different opinions on this subject, we will just have to trust God to speak to her either from one us or in another way even if our own views aren't what he intends to teach her.

That is was the doctrine you follow tells you to avoid what is clearly being said.

For these are not the only two warnings like this in God's word, and especially not by Paul.

Paul used human terms and examples multiple times in discussing salvation.

The Corinthians for one held a annual race, and Paul used that to explain salvation to them. He said they had to run the race to receive it.

Paul's letters to the Corinthians was because the members of that church thought they could live and do whatever they wanted.

Paul told them they could not drink the cup of Christ and the cup of demons both.

This teaching is the same that Jesus was saying in Matthew7 about can not serve Him and continue in lewdness both or He will say He never knew you.

That would be force, not agape. God is agape and therefore He doesn't force the Holy Spirit on the believer if the believer decides to abandon his belief in Christ.....

Look at what David prayed when he sinned:

"Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me." Ps 51:11

Also, read Hebrews 6:5,6

For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,6 and then have fallen away (apostatize, i.e., abandon Christ) , it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.


Heb 3:2 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,


Time after time Paul warns believers not to give up their faith in Christ. Why would he do that if you can't be lost once you initially accept Christ?

Exactly!...the Holy Spirit in her heart will witness to her...we need to search the scriptures too for ourselves and check out everything that someone says..the bible say...we add to the scripture.....the Lord Jesus is able to make her stand! He is faithful!

David is not an example of a New Covenant believer in Christ. This is a classic example of mixing the Old and New Covenants and not taking all scripture into play. Jesus said "I will never leave you!"

Back in the Old Covenant it was " You do and God will"...conditional on YOU do

new Covenant = Jesus did..you become = based on what Jesus did

different covenants....

NO, absolutely not. If I, through a hardened heart, abandon Christ, I can of my own free-will take myself out of his hands. But no one else can.....

Otherwise you have a God who forces salvation. If that's the case, then all men will be saved!

Honestly if he forced salvation it would be better but he values a willing heart not a forced one
 
The bible cleary shows those that teach and follow apostate teachings are not saved.

The true meaning of apostasy is one who once was in the Truth but then wandered off into false ways.
