I'm guessing you are talking about the one in the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve ate from the tree of good and evil?

don't know how you would define it but everyone has sin and in need of a Savior.

original as something new and never seen before? no not really nothing new under the sun.

Original as in built into human flesh nature? yes people are naturally selfish and sinful

but God places in them a New Spirit and New heart that strives for Good and not evil when they are born again.

What is it and has it affected/effected anyone?
original sin happened when Adam ate of the fruit as mentioned in Genesis 3... because of his sin, all of mankind is completely depraved to the point where we are incapable of saving ourselves.

no man can get into heaven under his own will. no man can ever do good to merit his own salvation... but does that mean a sinner can't help a lady cross the street? of course not. That sinner can do that... but it does nothing to save him. He can do all the good works he wants, but in the end, his works will never save him.

hence the need for Jesus Christ

Is there such a thing.. ?

Ps.51

[5] Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Ps.58

[3] The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.
[4] Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;
Job.14

[1] Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
[2] He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
[3] And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
[4] Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
John.3

[5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
[6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
John.6

[63] It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Rom.5

[12] Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Eph.2

[1] And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
[2] Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
[3] Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Apart from the religions of men, there is a wisdom in the teaching of things in the Garden of Eden, which takes place even in our own lives in this present time.

Adam and Eve heard the Word of God, but were tempted, and in that temptation, they chose to do the things which seemed right to them rather than heeding the Word of God. What is original sin in the Garden of Eden, is also original sin found even in this present time. If this is carefully considered, it will become evident according to our own lives.

12 Therefore, as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned:--

13 for until the law sin was in the world; but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the likeness of Adam's transgression, who is a figure of him that was to come.
15 But not as the trespass, so also is the free gift. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound unto the many.
16 And not as through one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment came of one unto condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses unto justification.
17 For if, by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; much more shall they that receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, even Jesus Christ.
18 So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life.
19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous.
20 And the law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace did abound more exceedingly: 21 that, as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

original sin = selfishness

sin is selfishness?
i thought sin was Biblically defined as transgression of the Law

1 John 3:4
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

James 2:10
For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

i hadn't heard of that other definition of sin until i studied what Finney wrote.

Since the New Testament is written in Greek the words
Harmatia and Parabasis describes what is meant with sin.

Its not only transgression (of the law) but moreover Harmatia "TO MISS THE MARK".

Hamartia - Greek Lexicon

This good ada, but both are very much the same idea.... what 'mark' do we miss? its the Holy Standard of the Law.

But the good news is ofcourse thatChrist fulfilled the requirements of the Law.. for freedom He has set us free. free to serve Him :)

No it is different look for the hebrew term Chata which is the same as Harmatia in greek.
But of cause i fully agree that Jesus Christ washed us through His Blood us from all kind of sins.

The root of all sin is selfishness. The law was given to help us understand that very principle. Read the ten commandments. It's pretty clear.

God's reasons for giving man the Law is 3 fold:

1. To help us understand what God expects from us.

2. To help us understand both the Character and Nature of God.

3. To help us discern the identity of the Messiah (who is Jesus).

When you study at each of the ten commandments, notice how the motivation behind each is SELFLESS. Love they Lord thy God, Do not exalt any other idols, do not take a life of another, honor thy parents, do not covet, do not commit adultery, the list goes on. The very nature of each is selfless, each one being in direct conflict with man's own selfish desires and ambitions, which Paul refers to as "the flesh".

The reason why God says that if we break one we break them all is because to break just one proves that their is selfishness in your heart. Unfortunately for mankind, there is no way that you and can fulfill in and of our own strength. This is why God has given to each believer the Holy Spirit, to lead us and guide into righteousness. If the Holy Spirit truly resides in us then we will manifest the evidences (fruits) of the Spirit being present: peace, love, joy, meekness, tenderness, patience, etc. While Romans 7 reveals to us the depravity of man's nature, Romans 8 reveals to us that we needn't fulfill the lusts of the flesh if we willingly embrace the Divine Nature, letting go of all the bad memories, emotions and desires which tempt the flesh to act our in selfishness.

My definition of sin, which equates with selfishness, has nothing to do with Finney. It was something the Lord Himself placed on my heart regarding the depravity of mankind and the nature of Grace to over come that depravity in our hearts.

1. To help us understand what God expects from us.what does this mean?
