I will certainly be tarred and feathered for this news article. But
it seems to me the prosperity gospel comes at a high price...

Considering Jesus gave His life for us, actually Joel's $850 to hear
him speak, is relatively inexpensive isn't it ?

It does seem Joel is prospering very well. I hope he spreads his
wealth. We have people asking for prayer here who need jobs,
and or money for food or medication or housing..... I just spoke
with a friend tonight whose relative had to be on disability and due
to illness and is on many meds. The relative was notified today they
will not be getting disability any more. This is happening to Christians.

Hard to explain to the average Christian why Joel and other prosperity
preachers are faring so well, and saying everyone should have the best,
and it just is not working for them. Jesus must weep at the poor in
need. He does love a cheerful giver... You know who is giving ? Those
who are true Christians and living on limited incomes, but believe God
will provide. God bless those who give to those in need. Amen...

Osteen is an inspirational preacher, not a bible teacher. As for a preacher no matter what he preaches to use the money he gets from his congregation to fatten his own pocket is wrong. The money is to be used to keep the church running and to give to the those who need help. Also one thing I keep having to bring up to others is that things do not necessarily get better just because you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The devil is going to come at you harder to try and get you to falter.

Money hungry preachers that pocket the money I have no respect for, but not all TV evangelists should be put into this category as some do. Just because they ask for money, make sure you know where that money goes to before putting them in this category. Some do put the money to good use.

I would also like to add that this applies to all things, for instance the Salvation Army.....They get tons of money from the public but only give a small percentage back out.

Skipp: I used to watch him and really did like him..... until I realized it was
repetitive teachings. Next thing I see him on TV doing just what you said.
He is wishy washy in his stance about the truth of the Gospel of Christ. I am
sorry he has been led astray. Money has done that to many people.

We can pray for him. I sincerely mean that. I pray he will have an awakening

That is why I was asking because I don't listen to him. I just came across the youtube video one day of him talking to Oprah about her new age religion and watched it. In it he said Jesus was the only way, so do to I don't follow or pay attention to him I was asking. I only listen to bible based preachers.

Where did Osteen say Jesus was not the only way to heaven? I would like to see that because the only thing I have seen him talk about this was when he was talking to Oprah about this, and he told Oprah that through Jesus was the only way but he believed there was many ways to come to Jesus.

On June 20 Joel Osteen, bestselling author and pastor of America's largest church, appeared on Larry King Live. To put it generously, the interview was a mess. Osteen came off sounding unclear about basic elements of biblical theology. At one point he calls himself a coach and a motivator in the pulpit. He says he is an "encourager at heart" whose "message is a message of hope, that's God's for you." Does believe in hell? Yes he does but that does not have much emphasis in his ministry. "I know there is condemnation but I don't feel that's my place."

When asked why he doesn't quote Scripture more in his book, he offers a simple answer:

My message, I wanted to reach the mainstream. We've reached the church audience. So I just try to, what I do is just try to teach practical principles. I may not bring the scripture in until the end of my sermon and i might feel bad about that. Here's the thought. I talked yesterday about living to give. That's what a life should be about. I brought in at the end about some of the scriptures that talk about that. But same principal in the book.

He has been roundly criticized for the following exchange:

KING: What if you're Jewish or Muslim, you don't accept Christ at all?

OSTEEN: You know, I'm very careful about saying who would and wouldn't go to heaven. I don't know ...

KING: If you believe you have to believe in Christ? They're wrong, aren't they?

OSTEEN: Well, I don't know if I believe they're wrong. I believe here's what the Bible teaches and from the Christian faith this is what I believe. But I just think that only God with judge a person's heart. I spent a lot of time in India with my father. I don't know all about their religion. But I know they love God. And I don't know. I've seen their sincerity. So I don't know. I know for me, and what the Bible teaches, I want to have a relationship with Jesus.

That's a terrible answer. Just awful. And I say that as one who has been somewhat sympathetic to Joel Osteen. But that's just not a good answer at all. It appears to waffle on the crucial point of salvation through Christ alone. To his credit, Pastor Osteen has posted an open letter on his website about this particular answer. He acknowledges the criticism and then adds this clarification:

I watched Oprah Winfrey's hour-long interview with Joel Osteen last Sunday evening. Osteen's Lakewood Church is familiar to me, as I grew up in Houston and watched his father's church grow into one of the first multi-racial congregations in our city.
Some say that he is a minister for our day, adapting his methods to the high-tech, media-driven culture we are called to reach. Others argue that he adapts not just his methods but his message to our relativistic, pluralistic world.
Osteen came closest to that precipice last night when he answered Oprah's question about many ways to God. He said that Jesus is the only way to God, but that there are many ways to Jesus. I'm not sure if his answer was post-denominational or post-Christian.
The issue of postmodernism aside, I am not writing today to critique Osteen's theology. Others who have heard more of his sermons and read more of his books can do that better than I can. My purpose is to learn from his popularity.
It's a remarkable story: he preached his first sermon on the Sunday before his father died, then led his congregation to become the largest church in America. Lakewood spent $95 million to renovate a former basketball arena into its present campus. His books have sold in the millions; he has packed stadiums across the country; his televised sermons reach more than seven million people each week in 100 nations.

so true, i too living on disabilty, i wont watch Osteen, glad you wrote on this,

God bless you "sixtyone" ...... I know we have begun to be more aware of
what is being preached today. I was so tired of TBN and many of their speakers
and the prosperity part. It was like... if you give so much you will be healed type
thing. I do not believe in that. I do believe if the Lord lays on our heart to give
$10 to a ministry you know is preaching the true Gospel of Christ, it is good to do it.
When God tells us to give, we can be certain He will give back in one way or another.
I pray for you and may the Lord bless you and help you in all your needs. We need
to pray for one another.

One wonders too, what is the purpose of this. It's certainly an inefficient way to allocate resources to get out a message.

The only purpose seems to be to raise money for the sake of raising money.

I got one of those free Gideon's Bibles from school. That to me was more effective. Imagine how many bibles can be purchased for $850!
