I always thought I was a very patient person. However, about 2 years ago I had a very hard time with being patient. I became impatient with the fact that at the age of 25 I was still single and all my teenage dreams were not coming true like I thought they would.
Here is a little background history. I have an identical twin sister. All our lives we have done “everything” together. So, as a teenager I thought that we would always do everything together, even falling in love with our Mr. Rights and getting married around the same time. Well, two years ago she met the man that is now her husband. At first I was ok with it and was extremely happy for her.
Yet, those teenage dreams began to crumble around me as reality hit that I had yet to meet my Mr. Right. It didn’t help that my friends and family began to tease me about when I was going to start dating/get married. Instead of standing on the truth, I had known all my life that God had someone great out there for me and in his timing we would meet. I instead gave into self pity, and became impatient that God’s timing was not my timing.
If you’re a Christian who has ever ask God for patience to withstand any kind of circumstances you face, then you might have an idea of how God taught me to have patience in his way. He placed me in situations that tried my patience at every turn. Each day was a struggle of wills. The struggles of the teacher who knew what needed to be done and how to do it, pitted against the will of the students who were bucking at everything wanting to have things their own way.
It was a continual battle that taught me to draw closer to God. This time of growing in my life made me realize that when I was away from God’s will and wanting things my own way I would face many struggles. Then when I was inline with God’s will there were still struggles but he provided the strength to get through them. Through those struggles I learned to once again be patient with God’s timing.
I know I am not the only person to ever have to learn the hard lesson of what it means to be patient with God’s timing. What are some of the things that have helped you overcome your impatience with God’s timing in your lives?
