I've recently finished reading a book by Steven Waterhouse: Jesus and History. It's generally a good book although he tends to repeat himself over and over. However, it has a really good Appendix called "Outside the Heavenly City—Abortion in Rome and the Early Church's Response." He makes a good case that one of the primary meanings of the word pharmakia and its derivatives in the New Testament is abortion inducing drugs.
