Key Passage: John 8:1-11

[h=1]John 8:1-11New Living Translation (NLT)[/h][h=3]A Woman Caught in Adultery[/h]
8 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.
4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.

I. PHYSICAL ADULTERY
1. Sin is obvious. Sexual. (She was caught.) Illicit man/woman relationships.
2. There's a consequence: Stoning to death.
a) Deut. 22:23-24
b) Deut. 17:7
3. The sin was exposed by the Law of Moses. Claiming Moses as their father.
4. The response of Pharisees and Sadduccees: Very religious and protecting only their interest and not the interest of the people. Breaking the Law of Moses. Treacherous. They did not brought the man with the woman who was caught in adultery. (Lev. 20:10) Traditional. The motive is sinful than the action of an adulterous woman.

9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
11 “No, Lord,” she said.
And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

II. SPIRITUAL ADULTERY
1. Sin is not obvious. Very subtle. (Pride and Hypocrisy) God/Man relationships.
2. There's a consequence: Becomes an enemy of God
a) James 4:4-6 Opposed by God
b) Ezekiel 16 God will allow detestable things to happen.
3. The sin was exposed by the Spirit and God's words. (Psalm 40:8 "I desire to do your will O my God; your law is within my heart.)
4. Jesus response: Merciful and graceful yet stern obedience to the Father. Giving them self-reflection or a chance to repent. Sin is sin. He did not spare the woman of the consequence. He encouraged the accuser who doesn't have sin to throw a stone.

Whether sexual or sensual, they have consequences. Jesus particularly exposed more the spiritual adultery of the accuser than the physical adultery. While he wrote on sand, he offered mercy, forgiveness and hope.

For me, the story is not about the adulterous woman nor the Pharisees or Sadducees testing Jesus. The story is about physical adultery and spiritual adultery.

Where can you relate?
Are you into physical adultery? Spiritual adultery? Or both?
How do you think God feels about it?
What sin do you find most difficult to leave behind you? What can you do today to change that?
How does it feel to hear Jesus say, "Neither do I condemn you"?

If you're already a Christian and still in that sin, never give up on reading the word of God. The word of God is powerful and effective even you are defective.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a professional counselor or preacher. I've learned it all by reading the bible, attended seminars/training on our church. By the power of prayer, grace and God's words.) And the most powerful is God's love.)

2. There's a consequence: Stoning to death.
a) Deut. 22:23-24
b) Deut. 17:7

I´m NOT a lawyer but, to be stoned... There was 1 person missing (the man) and he probably ran to those cities Jews have to spare ppls lives (as when killing a person unintendedly).

As a lesson, for THAT woman... She probably that man wasn´t a person who deeply loved her: He ran, without fighting, to spare HER life, instead of running alone...

Good questions:

"Are you into physical adultery? Spiritual adultery? Or both?
How do you think God feels about it?"

I wondered what other ppl might have felt when they felt disappointed (Spiritually and Physically)
