Piercing or tattoo?

What about Ezekiel 16.12, where the Lord Himself gives earrings to Zion?

Good verses that you quoted, but I don't think that interpreting them to the exclusion of all earrings is what we are necessarily expected to do.

Why would you feel the need of a tattoo? It certainly is not going to get you in solid with Christ. If He said, "Yeah, all my followers should be tattooed from head to toe" I would say hurry up and get inked. But He did not say that now did He?
No, He said He had not come to change one Jot of the law. That means they still exist and are in force. You do what you want, but do not come crying to me when you find out that you screwed up. I say this with love ....please do not ink yourself. It has too many pagan and heathen roots. You are beautiful just as you are.

Earrings were a sign of being indebt to someone. One who was indebt had a hole put in their ear and a ring placed in it to keep the hole open, until the debt was paid for at which time the ring was removed.

He is God, we are not. He will mark whomsoever he chooses, It is NOT our place to do so.

shrimp: I hardly think God is contradicting Himself when in Ezekiel 16.12 he gives Zion earrings (and even a nose ring) and that if we give or wear them, too, we are going against what He did. I don't interpret the Scriptures in such a way, and neither do a lot of Christians, either.

What about the verse in Leviticus 19, next to the one which some interpret as meaning tattoos, which says about not trimming the corners of one's beard? do preachers shave? and are New Testament Christians really under the same Jewish regulations that Old Testament Jews in the land under the law were? (I'm dispensational actually.)

yes, they are. And quite frankly, there is no such thing as a "New Testament Christian". Jesus Taught from the Law, as did the Apostles. That was all they had. They didn't have "Old/New Testament". Yes many preachers and pastor and church members shave, does this make it right? no.
And if you don't see the obvious meaning of "nor print any marks upon you", you might as well stop debating with God.

Well, as a dispensationalist, I would see a distinction between Israel and the church, the Old Testament and the New, being under grace and under law, etc. I don't see the Sabbath and tithing as binding on New Testament believers, for example. In the 10 commandments, the only one which is not repeated in the New Testament by the Lord Jesus is the one about the Sabbath. Hebrews 7 says the law was changed; the law said nothing about priesthood in Judah, for example. 'The law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did, by which we draw near unto God' (Hebrews 7.19) Earrings are way down the list of priorities for the Christian, one way or another, but I think they fall within Romans 14 Christian liberty.
 
ok, first, im 75 years old and when i give blood they still have to filter the ink out. along with pastoring churches and serving as a salvation army officer i was 3 years in the army, 5 years in the air force, and shipped merchant marine for a few years. i was young and tattoos were a kind of cultural norm in all those worlds. if tattoos are a sin, i suspect that they are way down on the list of sins. the great objection to tattoos (from my point of view) is that in 30 or 40 years the pretty butterfly turns into an inkblot. if you want pictures, either use the henna thing or some other removable marker. with a tattoo, today you will be the cute girl with the butterfly on her neck. in 15 years people will look and say "the mole on that woman's neck looks terrible, i wonder if it's skin cancer?"

Well, in some ways, particularly at or after the age of 18, tattoos are even more of a cultural norm today, I suppose.

(Except that these days 18 year old granddaughters are sometimes accompanied by their grandmothers when they go to get them.)

Anyway, a lot of people get Bible reference tattoos, Christian fish symbol, <><, etc.
 
When I was in High School, back in the early 80's, I could not name one person that I knew personally who had a tattoo. Back then it seemed like the majority of people who had tattoos were either bikers, sailors or convicts. Today many people are getting them. The only piercings that I saw back then were women with pierced ears. Now I see all kings of piercings on women and men. The culture has certainly changed.

Yes, now grandmothers have tattoos. Regarding Christians, some feel they must fight against them. Others embrace the medium and use them - they believe - effectively in witness as efficient conversation-starters, Bible verses, Christian fish symbol, <><, etc.
