I've become more interested in the OT recently. Being retired gives me more time. I came across something that gave the reasons why God afflicted Egypt with ten plagues. I have learned this much over the years. God never says or does anything for no good reason.
The ten plagues were directed at the ten gods that Egypt worshiped. While in captivity, Israel also worshiped those gods. (Joshua 24:14) Pharaoh himself was worshiped as a god.
1 John 5:21 exhorts us to keep ourselves from worshiping idols. Idols can be a wide range of things, not just statues. It may be a car, a job, a home, status or anything that gets between us and God.
God has a way of showing us how useless idols are. It won't be ten plagues. But it may be an individual letting us down, a career being a disappointment; a work we were called to becoming a chore.
