Introduction
Being titular buddhists, our family would occassionally go to the temple. Never finding spiritual belonging as a Buddhist, I finally prayed to God one day that my dad's daily beating of me would stop.
It stopped that day. Miraculously, he came home without his face being contorted in anger and worry. This was remarkable given our dire financial situation. Always fearful of confronting non-paying tenants until they had become incorrigable squatters, he was facing multiple foreclosures. But that day, I became a Christian.
When told about my belief in God, my mom was immediately interested in what I had to say. She had searched for spirituality from Buddhism to Einsteinism- always coming to a dead end. But upon hearing my conversion to Christianity, she prayed about her daily chest pain, and it went away just as suddenly as my dad had stopped beating me.
Our financial situation soon improved. The halycyon late 90's had significantly increased the value of our holdings. By selling them, our family made a princely profit despite years of lost rent.
But my dad wouldn't budge on Christianity. He would alternate between mockery of God, to being uncontrollably violent. We would try to go to Church, but he would lock us in on Sunday with threats of abuse. The few times we escaped was met by his immediate reprisal.
Ironically, he was also searching for meaning in life. But it came in the form of failed business projects, conniving promise-you-the-world types, and cures for AIDs.
While I attended one of the most difficult universities in the U.S., he invested the substantial amount of money we had made in the 90's in the ultimate business deal. Utterly convinced by a self-described rags-to-riches mogul, my dad was moved to tears when this businessman self-described his remarkable ascent and unparalleled genius.
Despite everyone advising him differently, he pressed on with dreams of great riches, where he would live in a palace filled with fawning admirers of his business acumen. His business partner promised him that.
Forced to work 25 hours a week to pay for living expenses and housing, I was blessed that he paid for the tuition. It was during this time that I moved somewhat away from God.
One day, the businessman disappeared. My mom immediately took over from my dad's folly and arrogance. Through sheer persistance, and over several years of dogged pursuit, and a huge dose of luck, much of the money was recovered.
During this tribulation, both her parents suffered health problems and one died after a struggle with cancer.
Stretched to the limit, she suffered a heart attack soon after the conclusion of her multiple ordeals.
The problem and request for prayers
Over the years, there were always threats of divorce between my parents. We prayed, cried, and struggled to keep the family together. I made a surprise visit home and saw my dad, who had previously been faithful, with a prostitute.
My mom has no idea, thinking that her loyalty and subordination would guarantee his loyalty.
What do I do? Please, please advise me and point me to the relevant passages in the Bible. And pray for me.
