No that is not what I think Jesus means, because we should always have Hope in the Lord and we are not to be depressed or suffer from great sadness. that is not what God wants us to be.

Self-esteem is not a bad thing. It is not about being depressed. it is about esteeming GOD higher then ourselves. not placing others above us and thinking they are better then us but acknowledging that GOD is better then we are.

i'll post some scripture because when I don't everyone gets offended and misunderstand my words....

Philippians 2

1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

the point is if everyone does the above then everyone will not only look out for their own interests but also everyone elses and we will act as the True body of Christ in unity and love. that does not mean to be depressed and not to know your value to Christ. We are God's children and should never forget that or be made to feel less then who God made us to be.

Proverbs 12:25
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.

Luke 12

29 “And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things[c] shall be added to you.
32 “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom

Philippians 4:5-7
New King James Version (NKJV)
5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Brothers and sisters remember we are God's children. do not let the lies dwell in your hearts or minds but place it upon the altar of God and with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. May God's peace and love dwell in your hearts and life.
please re-read your own quote from Philippians Ch 2 I underlined the words you need to focus on.

Here is another translation
  1. Philippians 2:3
Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].

yes it should NOT be prompted by conceit or empty arrogance. self esteem should be based on how GOD views you: as His child.

the spirit of humility or lowliness of mind does NOT mean your are worthiless or should feel depressed and subjugated. it does not mean you should allow people to misuse and abuse you. it does not mean you should not stand up for injustice or allow oppression to occur.

It talks about allowing the NEEDS of others to come first in your mind and your should do for THEM First and because of love allow their needs to be more important then your own. the whole turn the other cheek and give cloak as well as coat thing.

people take that verse to the extreme and allow themselves to be abused because they are told that is what God wants them to do. wolves take advantage of that verse way to often. they quote it to make others obey but do not obey it themselves.

perhaps this one will balance it out. for all are EQUAL brethren in Christ. there is no male or female or anyone better or more worthy then another.

2 Corinthians 8:13-15
New King James Version (NKJV)
13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened; 14 but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack—that there may be equality. 15 As it is written, “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.”[a]

Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

All well said Anandahya, I will add though, even though one does not have to be used or harmed.
There is a heart asked for in Jesus that is given , willing for the sake of another.
But this is given and known in Jesus only, and should not be done of ones own understanding.
For there is no greater act, than to lay down ones life for another.
Im sure many will argue this, taking any abuse for another in Jesus.
But some understandings are for the will of God In Jesus Christ is Lord.

As to the poor in Spirit, when there is nothing left but Jesus, reciving a new heart and spirit from Him.

in Jesus, God bless,
