In another interview with his longtime atheist friend, Eugenio Scalfari, Pope Francis claims that Hell does not exist and that condemned souls just "disappear." This is a denial of the 2,000-year-old teaching of the Catholic Church about the reality of Hell and the eternal existence of the soul.

The interview between Scalfari and the Pope was published March 28, 2018 in La Repubblica. The relevant section on Hell was translated by the highly respected web log, Rorate Caeli.

The interview is headlined, "The Pope: It is an honor to be called revolutionary." (Il Papa: “È un onore essere chiamato rivoluzionario.")

Scalfari says to the Pope, "Your Holiness, in our previous meeting you told me that our species will disappear in a certain moment and that God, still out of his creative force, will create new species. You have never spoken to me about the souls who died in sin and will go to hell to suffer it for eternity. You have however spoken to me of good souls, admitted to the contemplation of God. But what about bad souls? Where are they punished?"

Pope Francis says, "They are not punished, those who repent obtain the forgiveness of God and enter the rank of souls who contemplate him, but those who do not repent and cannot therefore be forgiven disappear. There is no hell, there is the disappearance of sinful souls."

That's going to make a lot of Catholics breathe easier for a while. Their doctrine of purgatory has always given them a back door through which they will sneak into heaven.

Even the Catholics are getting fed up of this Pope and his nonsensical utterances. He is essentially a subversive in both the spiritual and political realms. Should have bee fired almost as soon as he was appointed to this position. Not that the Pope and the Vatican have any validity in the eyes of God. They are more like the Synagogue of Satan.

Catholic hell?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this about hell: "Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire." The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs." (CCC 1035)

And the website "Catholic Answers" says this about hell: " The Catechism emphasizes the fact that Hell is primarily eternal separation from God. As CCC 1033 says, “The state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed.” It is absolute emptiness and isolation beyond anything we can fathom. The "pains" that are quite real, quite literal, and consist of both the pain of loss, and the pain of sense, i.e., they involve the body after the resurrection of the body, "follow from the very nature of sin," or, they arise from the inside out, not from the outside in. What is mortal sin but the rejection of the love of God and neighbor? It is ultimate selfishness. Ultimately, the damned will simply get what they wanted—themselves for all eternity!

It is said that a man will go insane if he is kept in isolation for too long because human beings are so ordered toward communion with God and others. Hell will be that isolation that would lead anyone to insanity, but the condemned will never be able to lose their faculties. They will be fully cognizant of the pain of their isolation."

Looks like they're not "consumed" at all.

But that is the Catholic Hell. You can find no clear statement of it in the Bible which does NOT teach the immortality of the soul

Only bodies can have mortality or immortality. But souls are imperishable and eternal, therefore they have eternal destinies.

I prefer what the Bible teaches :) Where does it claim the 'souls' (whatever they are) are immortal.?

The Bible does not necessarily have to say explicitly "Souls are imperishable and continue for eternity". But that truth is clearly revealed, as in this example from Revelation 14:

9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

10
The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

11
And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

"For ever and ever" means exactly what it says -- for eternity. It so happens that there is also a resurrection of DAMNATION, so this description includes the bodies, souls, and spirits of those who have taken the Mark of the Beast.

BTW "immortal" is a misnomer for souls. Only bodies can be mortal (subject to physical death) or immortal (not subject to death).

Well, the Bible says that anyone who takes the Mark of the Beast will suffer in torment forever:

"If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name." (Revelation 14:9-11)

The Beast and the False Prophet also will be "tormented day and night forever and ever" in the Lake Of Fire. (Revelation 20:10)

Not consumed.

The smoke of their torment, which alone rises for ever and ever, is an eternal reminder of their examination before the holy angels and the Lamb which (their examination) ceased when it was finished. Compare Isaiah 66.24.

The fact that they 'ceased not to worship the Beast' was why they were held guilty

"For ever and ever" means exactly what it says -- for eternity.

true but it only refers to the smoke of their torment, the means of questioning them

Also a resurrection of DAMNATION, so this description includes the bodies, souls, and spirits of those who have taken the Mark of the Beast.
Raised to be judged before finally being destroyed .

LOL the SOUL as we know it is not a Biblical concept.

Did you miss my last post? Perhaps you should read it.
Are you comparing yourself with the Devil? LOL It is NEVER said that men will be cast ALIVE into the Lake of Fire.

Man and the life principle (the soul) within will be cast in DEAD.
