Jesus often taught in parables. Simple stories that related Truths of Gods Kingdom to men in simple language. While reading Matthew again, when I read Chapter 20, I realized that this passage reveals Gods Plan for the salvation of man as the actual steps occurred.

1For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

2And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

3And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

4And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.

5Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.

6And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?

7They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.

8So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.

9And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

10But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.

11And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,

12Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.

13But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?

14Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.

15Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

16So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

This parable reflects how God is not a respecter of persons, nor places more worth on those saved early in life as opposed to those saved at different stages of their lives, even up to "the 11th hour." Deathbed conversions come to mind as well as Battlefield conversions. ALL who confess the name of Jesus receive eternal salvation equally! Now, we know that Scripture teaches that each will receive a reward according to their "works" be they good or bad.

2 Corinthians, Chapter 5:10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

The 2nd Chapter of Romans gives a detailed explanation:

1Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

2But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

3And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

4Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

5But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

6Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

7To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

8But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

9Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

10But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

11For there is no respect of persons with God.

Those who confess the Name of Jesus surely receive salvation, and will be rewarded according to their service to the Kingdom. Regardless of how long they served the Kingdom of God. Just as those who die in unbelief will be rewarded with eternal damnation.

I agree with your interpretation. All who are saved are happy in heaven, which is qualitatively opposite from the misery of hell. However, there may be a quantitative degree of joy in heaven due to the amount of suffering for Christ on earth, comparable to those who are experienced in art or music appreciating paintings or compositions more than less knowledgeable persons.
