Okay so I typed the title to get your attention. I have seen a lot of recent posts about Purity. Well, actually I am not sure if they are recent or if some of them are older and at the beginning because of the Christian Chat Crash of 2011.

But anyway I have some questions about it. What is considered purity? Is being pure strictly a virgin thing or is it inclusive of born again virgins? (I dont like that phrase by the way.) Would you or would you not date someone who was not a virgin even if they no longer fornicate?

Well, how about you? Would you date a guy that had already had sex, but had renounced it? (I would, by the way). I guess I consider purity a state of mind rather than a laundry list of what you have or have not done. Especially since what you've done affects your state of mind :)

Yes I would.

I do have a sexual past. I was not raised in a Christian family and sex was no big deal to me when I was not a Christian. Since accepting Jesus Christ I no longer have sexual relationships. Most of the Christians I know are somewhat like me in that sense. I was just wondersing if it was a big deal to other people who have ot had the same life experience that we have.

Christian Chat Crash 2011....I love how you put it :D

you were washed clean with the blood of Jesus , once for all , seeing that as "big deal" is for people who have not sinned , so , nobody can judge you . don't worry , God wouldn't have for you someone who would see your past as "big deal" or take that into account , but someone who will see you the way He sees you now , purified with the blood of Jesus , a new creation , a woman of God :-)

Purity is a life style in my opinion. We all have made mistakes, and will continue to make them. Purity is a choice to avoid sexual activity, which from what I've read in Scripture pleases the Lord.

I'll be honest here.
I have never had sex, but I have 'fooled around'. I've been a Christian my entire life. To me, what I did was a sin. I don't believe that God put us here on this earth to gratify ourselves through sexual things. Those are made for enhancing a relationship and bringing the couple closer together. Fooling around or having sex outside of marriage is not what it was intended for. So my idea of purity is remaining as sexually pure as you can. Not fooling around with every other boy you date. Reserving the physical things for deeper relationships[[preferably marriage, but we all know that is very hard]].

I'm not saying it's easy, but I believe it's the right thing to do. However, if you have in the past, as I have, I do believe you are forgiven if you ask God with all your heart. Mistakes happen. God never expected us to be perfect.

So I do not know if I asked the question right but here goes again. I know that God has forgiven me for my sexual past. I was just wondering what other people thought about it. There have been so many posts about PURITY. If you have already had sex are you considered pure? To tell you the truth I hadnt really heard the phrase too may times before. I usually refer to it as celibacy or abstinance which would include all who are not currenty sexually active no matter what their past is.

Does that make more sense now? Is there a difference between purity, abstinance and celibacy?

I am a christian, but my boyfriend is ot, we have a sexual relationship but it makes me feel awful. I love my boyfriend very very much, but i hate knowing i am not pleasing God, i have tried breaking up with my boyfriend, but i just can't. Please help me. I am an awful person for hurting God like this :(

B_Kate: That is EXACTLY how my relationship was. It is so hard. I know. I mean we didn't have sex but we did everything else. I spent many nights crying over it.
Do not get discouraged. Pray about it. I prayed and prayed and eventually things worked themselves out. I know how hard it is wanting to please God and your significant other. It's extremely hard to day no. But just because you've done things doesn't mean you can't stop. Maybe breaking up is the only option. But in the long run you will be much happier staying pure. I promise.
If you ever need to vent, talk, or anything message me.
:]

Even though you've had a sexual past, you are still pure. :] Jesus is our righteousness...so it's not our works that make us clean, but what He did for us. He not only forgave you for that, but forgot it. It doesn't matter anymore.

To be honest, I would have some hesitations about being with a guy who previously had sex. It's no because I'd think he's an awful person or anything, but because it comes with so much baggage...like I'd always wonder once we had ex if he ever thought of her. I know that's something we could get past, and that the past doesn't matter because each day is new...but it would still hurt a little that he didn't wait for me. You know?

I also understand that is is super hard to not have sex before marriage. And it's not the person's fault if they didn't know what they do now as a Christian. Christians make mistakes, too, in this area, and it doesn't make them a bad person or make God dislike you or anything. No matter what, you're (me, all of us) are still pure in His eyes.

Sorry that was kind of long and unorganized...hope it made sense!

May I answer, though I'm not so young anymore... but I've got kids and can answer from that position....

For me, purity is soooo important. I wasn't raised to value purity. But I wish I had been. I think about my little ones and I raise them with the intent to keep them "pure" for God. Not just about sex, but about everything they see and hear.

I don't believe in wrapping them in a bubble, but I want to teach THEM to choose purity. They know that there are sinful things out there (to watch, to read, to do)... but I pray that with our encouragement, God's spirit in their lives, and with prayer.... they will choose the path of purity.

Yes, it covers much more than sex... Sometimes it's how you dress, the ideas you are introduced to, etc...

It can be purity of mind, purity of sight, purity of hearing, etc... I think of it this way, a pure diamond is one that is original and without other stuff mixed in. My desire is my kids will grow up knowing OF the world, but not having the world IN them.

:)
thank you for letting me answer!!!

Purity is so much more than a physical thing. If purity were strickly pertaining to all things virginal, well, seeing how some people have every different definitions of what a virgin is, how some people are virgins becaused they done "everything but that," and how we all have our faults (even us virgins :o), I wouldn't say purity was all that pure.

Even though God/Christ cares about how we treat our bodies, we are not Christians because we're virgins (if that were the case...), we're Christians because as we strive to be like Christ, our worldly desires fade away; being pure is spiritul and mental.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Through Christ we are pure :)

Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

Romans 14:20
Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy

For some reason the last post was cut off at the first 3 scriptures!?

Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

Romans 14:20
Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

1 Timothy 1:5
Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,

1 Timothy 3:9
holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.

1 Timothy 5:22
Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.

2 Timothy 1:3
[ Timothy’s Faith and Heritage ] I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day,

2 Timothy 2:22
Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Titus 1:15
To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.

Hebrews 10:22
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

James 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

1 Peter 1:22
[ The Enduring Word ] Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

1 Peter 2:2
as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

2 Peter 3:1
[ God’s Promise Is Not Slack ] Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),

1 John 3:3
And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

All these scriptures point out that God commands, not just asks us, to be and keep ourselves pure. There are warnings especially against sexual sins, for those that do these things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Don't be deceived, God is not mocked. He doesn't say this as a mere suggestion!

Eph 5:16-21
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

So if you have a problem with purity, fast, pray, repent, do whatever you can to get back into right standing with God and stop everything that would defile you to become impure. Only God can make you pure again, and no your salvation does not do it for you, it just gives you the ability now through Grace!!! YOU have to see to it that you stay pure, once you are saved,as it says (1John 3:3) we have to purify OURSELVES (and that through Christ), He gives us the grace to do it but yet we still have to DO it!

It repeatedly states to purify our hearts, minds and keep our bodies pure, having a pure conscience...etc... renewing our minds.
To be redeemed is a process, it only starts with your salvation. Many fall into this trap and think, since they once prayed a prayer they can now do no wrong, no matter what they do. Acting upon this leads right to hell, if there is no repentance!!!

Probably not going to be a popular post but it's the truth! It will save you from eternal condemnation!

Sex isnt bad. Sex isnt evil. Sex is sacred!! By sex we participate in creation. Its not there for our enjoyment, its there for our sactification, drawing closer to God. Thats what I think. Not a thing to approach casually at all. God forgives if you do, but that doesnt make it ok to do it again. If you do fall, you have to get back up, especially in this area. A pervert is just someone who falls and stays down.

Read Proverbs and Song of Solomon and you'll see that Sex is part of a God given gift to be ENJOYED! Like all gifts of God. That ONLY in Marriage though, you forgot to mention that! The only way that sex is pure!

Hebrews 13:4
Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge...
