If you can have a mentor it's a good thing, but a lot of people just don't have time to mentor you. You could apprentice somewhere, but a lot of people take advantage of their apprentices. You can also intern, but again, its the same but at least that may give you an idea of what it's like in the field, if you are lucky enough to secure an internship (it won't be paid)

I went and spoke to the Manager's assistant, and she told me that the Manager won't be back in the store until Saturday. Honestly, she looked pissed that I showed up, even though I was very polite, respectful, and not the least bit impatient or pushy. I simply asked her if a decision had been made yet, and she told me that it hasn't. I hope she doesn't put a negative word in for me, but I am not sure that she even knows what applicant I am. Whatever.

Also, although I have deliberately not mentioned this before, my Manager at my current job is constantly messing with me. He has me working the next four days at a store that is an hour and a half commute in each direction, and he did not put me up in a hotel. They are supposed to put you in a hotel if your commute one way exceeds an hour. Now I have to drive three hours every day in addition to a ten hour work day. Fun times ahead. It is what it is.​

Think of ways to appreciate the circumstances you find yourself in. Enjoy the ride, so to speak. I'd say that the interviewer took notes on each candidate and took them with him in order to deliberate on each one. If that is indeed the case, then you can appreciate probably having taken that much care on who he'd previously hired that would, if you are hired ultimately, be your coworkers.

I agree with Mem. I think you should take that as an indication of what working there will be like, and just move on.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. They have corporate accounts with certain hotel chains, and they have to book you in advance.

My ride in this morning took an hour and fifty minutes because of traffic. It ended somewhat humorously. My GPS told me to take an exit, and I exited in the left lane. A few seconds later, it told me to make a sharp right IN 100 FEET into the parking lot. I made the most hellacious, tires-screeching, fish-tailing, lane-crossing turn in the history of mankind and lived to post about it. Had anyone caught it on film, I could easily land a job in Hollywood as a stunt driver.

This building is slow, and they set me up directly under a speaker. The music is so loud that I can hardly communicate with shoppers. If they play "Opalite" by Taylor Swift, then I might have to bust a move. ​

They pay me .50 per mile for any mile over 40 miles in either direction. That is 50 cents or half of an American Dollar.

Your preferred career? If it don't pay it's just a hobby. Beta testers for video games get paid in literal dirt.....meaning they can't pay their bills from playing games....sure they make $20....after spending 2,000 hrs on a game...

You need $2k/mo minimum clear after taxes.....just to be broke all the time.

That's a minimum of $500/wk AFTER taxes and etc. That means a gross of $750/wk. Just under $20/hr. for 40hrs wk. Which is why a LOT of people work 2 jobs at 60 hrs minimum if not more just to be broke and exhausted all the time.

Rent is going to be 1200....

Rice and beans & beans and rice after that. But you will already always know what's for dinner and breakfast...The surprises are actually finding clothes in style that fit at Goodwill or Salvation Army.

That's how life is right now.

But....if you are happily married.....and spitting out babies like puppies each child's daycare is a minimum of $500wk
But....there are programs out there to assist young broke mothers.

So I am employed. I’m a sterilization technician. I clean surgical supplies and instruments. I like the jobs but it’s not my dream job. My dream job is something art related like maybe a charecter artists, an animator, a storyboard artist, a freelance artist, or even an art teacher. I graduated high school in 2023 and that’s the highest qualification I have. If I stay a year and get my sterile certification then I’ll get $2 raise so I guess that’s nice. I just don’t want to try art as a career and then it fail miserably ya know.

Ah ok.
Well..artists need to market themselves otherwise they need to join a studio or collective so they can be seen. I don't know many artists who make a career out of it, usually they just do it on the side and sell their work, the ones that can make it are usually already coming from artistic families or have wealth as a cushion.

But you probably know all this already. I only know of one school mate who became an artist, a lot of talent, gets her work exhibited in galleries internationally but she lives on creative grants and bread and cheese.

My dream job was to be a cartoonist. I think it would have been great if I had the talent making cartoons or comic strips and then getting syndication like my childhood hero Jim Davis. Or illustrating picture books. Alas it was never to be. I wouldn't have even minded just colouring in as a job, like doing cells for 2D animation. Or making murals, or even just painting houses.

Keep up with your sterilisation job, earn your certificate. a $2 raise is nothing to sniff at. Keep doing art that brings you joy. If you build up a good portfolio, then you could give it a try. Art school can be very expensive and I don't know if it gets you anywhere, the cost of doing it you need to recuperate somehow.

No, I did not. The General Manager just called me and told me that he promoted somebody from within the company. Apparently, they had been the Assistant Manager in relation to the position that I applied for, and now they are the Manager. However, he did tell me that the Assistant Manager's job will now be open and that it will be posted on the company website this Friday. He encouraged me to apply for that, saying that I would be a good fit for it, but he is probably saying that to all the original applicants. Anyhow, I will apply for it, God willing, later on this week. That's the update. ​

That's getting to be a difficult field to make a living in. It wasn't easy before AI but as AI gets better drawings will be something it can make easily (and quite possibly far more cheaply than humans). I'm not big on art but when I think art and careers here are a few things I come up with: Tattoo artist, doing / leading art therapy for people, creating graphics brochures etc for church, kids facepainting, caricature drawing . Not all of those are career paths but I'm sure if your church does kids events the kids would love to have their faces painted. And it might scratch the artistic itch since there's nothing remotely artistic about sterilizing things. Finding something you can get paid for that lets you be a little more artistic and expressive shouldn't be that difficult.

Librarian job was good when I could make displays, posters, decorate the library etc.

It would't have been so good if I wasn't allowed to do that. Also when the children made art I could hang it on the wall and they'd feel proud that they could make the library their own space with their own artwork displayed.

I worked in a bookshop and it was a franchise and it had to be all corporate colours and approved by the head office, so the boss of my store couldn't even put up a mural on the wall (it was painted black), he was tired of looking at a black wall. When Christmas came around he was too exhausted to bother with Christmas decorations esp since so much of the stock was already Christmas themed.

You need to take your skills to a creative hub, like film studios, animation studios, where there is work and they are wanting to hire creative types...some towns do have neighbourhoods where artists gather. Its like its little own society of creative types.

In past artists gathered in salons where they'd just talk about art and be artistic or literary. They'd be patronised by wealthy people.

I'm not meaning hair or nail salons, but I suppose if you're already a dab hand at sterilising things a nail salon would be easy for you and you could make a living from doing people's nails... have you seen how creative some nail art can be?

Personally I don't have my nails done (I garden, I already have green fingers) but lots of women do. Not sure about the men though lol You could offer pedicures/foot spas for them.

Empathically speaking, coming in on the 'ground floor' is a probably a more favorable entry into a new company, so that there's no resentment toward you from those that have been there and long waiting in hope for the opening, and the majority of your training would've had to come from such as those. And God knows if He brings you here for such a time that you (as such a one of faith and trust in God) would be much needed.

Likewise, @Sunshine2026, God has placed you as guardian against sepsis, and that's not so shabby a purpose, if you ask me.
I've only recently picked my interest in doing any artwork back up (it's been about 40 years since my senior class voted me Most Artistic) and, as you can see if I don't say so myself, I haven't lost the knack for it. I doodled my avatar using an art app that I'm experimenting with until I find my niche technique. It's panning out that the shading tool and the eraser are my go-to tools and why is coming back to me. It's a simple technique, smudge, smudge, erase, repeat... and the result looks like I spent all day on it. However, cooking pays my bills because everyone needs to eat, including me. Someday, maybe even soon, I might be able to get some pointers from Michaelangelo, for all I know. Enjoy today for all it's worth, whether sanitizing or painting, even if no one else appreciates it for its value, because that makes its value no less true.

I had an interview for another job at another company earlier today. I had only applied for a retail position because it was close to my home, and I am desperate to get out of my current job. About 4 minutes into my interview, they offered me a management position, and I accepted it. They started my background check today, and they should have the results tomorrow. There is a chance that I would start training next week. If not, then the following week. It's not totally official yet, but I have some real hope. Thank God and everyone here who said a prayer for me. I appreciate it more than you will ever know.​
