If you and your son were being abused, that's not yours or your son's fault. Nothing you or your son ever could have said or done could justify abuse towards either of you.

Because that's what you've been taught by the person who abused you. Abusive people blame their actions on the victim to justify what they're doing to you, and to keep you under their control.
It was NOT your fault.
