Dems change tune after mocking GOP for ‘drill, baby, drill’

Back when gas topped $4 a gallon, Republicans chanted "drill, baby, drill" at rallies across the country -- arguing more domestic drilling would increase supplies, reduce dependence on foreign oil and boost the U.S. economy.

Democrats, almost universally, mocked the GOP plan. In 2012, President Obama called it "a slogan, a gimmick, and a bumper sticker ... not a strategy."

"They were waving their three-point plans for $2-a-gallon gas," Obama told a laughing audience during an energy speech in Washington. "You remember that? Drill, baby, drill. We were going through all that. And none of it was really going to do anything to solve the problem."

"'Drill, baby, drill' won't lower gas prices today or tomorrow," Rep. Janice Hahn, D-Calif., echoed on the floor of Congress in 2012. "But it will fuel our addiction to fossil fuel."

Today, Democrats are singing a different tune, as increased domestic drilling has led to a record supply of domestic crude, put some $100 billion into the pockets of U.S. consumers and sent world oil prices tumbling.

Now, Obama and the Democrats are laying claim to the credit for lowering prices. However, it has nothing to do with them, or the Republicans. It is due to fracking, controversial but effective in producing from deep, previously unreachable oil and gas deposits, and all of it is being done on private lands, not federal, which are the only areas the federal government has any real control over production.

I think it just sad that they play political games with our national security and our individual freedoms under the guise of "caring" about the environment or the little guy....and even sadder that most people buy it.

Yeah fracking has had an impact on domestic crude in a couple of ways, one you mentioned is adding to our domestic reserves. The other is that OPEC doesn't like it so they are keeping production up so that they can make fracking less profitable for those companies. Along with less demand from China and more fuel efficient cars it makes for a lot better experience at the pump for sure..

Mass initiatives for renewable energy sources would do the economy more good than harm. How many people does it take to build a dam? Wind turbines? Mass solar fields? To install hydrogen pumps? Build hydrogen cars? Produce hydrogen fuel? Process biofuel? Build biofuel engines?

Oil and gas are profitable, but also toxic for humans. It's no secret then, that putting the fumes of these substances into the atmosphere humans breathe is bad for humans. Look at Beijing as a great example of industrial pollution. The smog is so thick in parts that people have to wear masks, cancer rates have soared and asthma in children has increased exponentially. It's poisoning people.

From what I have seen and heard it is true fracking is partly the reason for the temporary drop in oil prices. I have also heard of horizontal drilling practices which may be a bigger impact (I am not sure if horizontal drilling is the same as fracking.) Fracking is a big subject around here in Ohio and moreso with our neighbors in Pennsylvania, with many people strongly for and against the practice.

I personally do not mind if companies do their fracking, but I think the government should regulate and oversee them at least. There is one counterargument to fracking I have seen that is very credible and merits some consideration. That is fracking can lead to contamination of ground water, which much of our drinkable water source comes from. I do believe our clean water is much more precious than oil. Without oil we would be set back technologically, but without clean water civilization would cease entirely. Clean water has always been a hallmark of the most advanced civilizations, and it is important to safeguard it.
