Hello Everyone,

Before going into detail, I can sum up my reason for joining this forum in the following way: I am a college student, and I want to invite God more fully into my life. I recently completed by first semester of college and had a rough go of it with my roommate. It got pretty depressing. However, I did not let it affect my academics, and ended up with a 4.0 GPA. Even so, I feel as though my issues with my roommate and the effects they had on my happiness may have been alleviated quicker, had I been actively communicating with God.

I have the same roommate, and I do not want this semester to be like last, in that regard. What are ways to incorporate God into my life more?

Thanks!

Great to hear you want to incorporate God into your life more.

One way I find very helpful, is to listen to the Bible... not just read it. If you can get a hold of an Audio Bible, play it through your phone (or mp3 player)... if you can't get hold of an Audio bible, there are free versions online.

Another option is to use a Bible ap (I use the ESV Bible ap on Android), with Text-to-Speech. The current versions of text to speech are quite good.

Romans 10:14-17 " 14 But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him [SUP]*xu[/SUP]of whom they have never heard?[SUP]*n1[/SUP] And how are they to hear[SUP]*xv[/SUP]without someone preaching? [SIZE=+0]15[/SIZE] And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, [SUP]*xw[/SUP]“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” [SIZE=+0]16[/SIZE] But[SUP]*xx[/SUP]they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, [SUP]*xy[/SUP]“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” [SIZE=+0]17[/SIZE] So [SUP]*xz[/SUP]faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Hey bwgvsu, welcome to the forum :)

Is your roommate also a Christian? If yes, that's where you need to connect. Even if this person is not someone you easily get along with (or vise versa), if you both agree that your ultimate goal is to please Christ and live as brothers, building each other up, almost anything can be worked out, and you may find yourself with a valuable ally rather than someone difficult to get along with.

("...for if they fall, the one will help lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls; for he has not another to help him up... and if an adversary would prevail against one, two can withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken." Ecc 4:10,12)

If he isn't a Christian, there can be no guarantee that things will work out. But the thing to keep in mind is the same- your ultimate goal is in pleasing Christ. Regardless of whether he responds well to your behavior, keep in mind the higher goal is considering whether God is pleased with your heart and actions.

In either case, it will be beneficial to identify and be honest with your roommate about the mechanical problems that are occurring and how to work them out. What I mean by that is, you can start with someone you'd have a great relationship with in school or at work, but when you're living in close quarters, the relationship can quickly turn for the worse. The reason is often because the way you do life at that personal of a level is different, and those differences interfere with the way the other person is trying to live their life.

For example, that could mean differences in sleep schedule or habits (my first college roommate needed a wind machine to sleep, while I needed silence), study habits (music or quiet?), style of music you listen to (I had another roommate who loved death metal.. the most hilarious thing I ever saw was when he agreed to listen to some of the (quiet) music I liked, and after literally 3 seconds he covered his ears and started yelling "Turn it off!! Turn it off!! OK- I will ALWAYS wear headphones when you're around if you promise to NEVER play that music around me EVER AGAIN." And things worked out pretty well from there ;)).. also if and when you invite your social life into your common living environment, how clean and organized you expect the environment to be, how often you expect the garbage to be taken out, etc. People can have very different expectations and living habits.

There are also some things that are beyond your control. I had another roommate who simply had a severely hostile demeanor (destroying property during sudden outbursts, etc.). When I would respond with quietness or ignore it, he would continue to seethe, and apparently he took my quiet response as a token that his hostility could continue without correction or apology. (I would probably do things differently in hind sight, but that was a year-long test, I'll tell you :)..)

At any rate, find a place you can be completely alone or without interruption, and commit to a regular time with God there each day. Start with the same admission you posted here- asking for a deeper relationship with Him, and practical ways you could try to improve or build up your relationship with your roommate. Then, a suggestion someone made to me many years ago (which was the beginning of a closer relationship with God), is to isolate five main things you want to work on or see change with, write them down, and bring these five things before God in prayer each day for the next month. At the end of the month, go from there :).
