Six laws are to be distinguished in Romans.

1. The Law of Moses--What does it do? It condemns.

"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3:19-20).

Why do they want to take the Ten Commandments out of the school? Out of places that are governmentally owned? Because it is one big conviction tool of God. People come through and see them. They already blew the first two commandments, but they try to reject that by their little tradition and religious things. But by the time you get around to lying and coveting--I mean, it's got everybody! And God comes along and says, "Guess what guys, you broke one you broke them all."

Oh man! Why? Because the world is thinking what? I'm not a murderer, I'm not a rapist, I'm not an embezzler--no, but you are a stinking liar though. How did I lie? Then you go, 'Oh, that was just a little white lie ... a little sin.' Well, to God a little sin will send you to hell. Sin is sin. They hate the Law because it condemns. Yes it does.

2. And then, Law as a principle . . .

"But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets"
(Romans 3:21).

'Witnessed,' what's that mean? What is a principle? Something you live by. The principle you live by is the Law. So, trying to live by the principle of the Law. You don't want to kill, you don't want to steal, you want to obey the Law--the principle by which you live. Right? The best you know how. That is a good principle.

People will tell you in order to have civilization you have to have the Law of God. You have to, otherwise you are a barbarian or a Scythian--or Muslims running around here crazy, killing anybody they want, doing whatever they want. That isn't civilized. And yet they think that they have the law of God.

3. The Law of Faith--which excludes self-righteousness.

"Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law" (Romans 3:27-28).

". . . by the law of faith . . ." - We operate by faith. Do you know what that is? It's a law. It's supposed to be a constant in a Christian. Faith, believing in and acting on what God says.

4. The Law of the Mind . . .

"I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me" (Romans 7:21).

Now can we all please say that we are in the same boat as Paul? We are going to end up in the same direction as Paul. Paul is our ... what? ... spokesman, right? Gentiles. He is going through this. A lot of times when I look at this and read it ... somehow Paul was excluded ... even though he wrote it. When I finally looked at this and saw a man that was converted, had that connection with God, was taught of God and personally taught of the Lord Jesus Christ for three years in the desert. He is growing in the Lord, just like you and I grow. And he is coming across this perplexing lifestyle, because all of a sudden he is finding out stuff.

My goodness! I'm converted. I got taught by Jesus. Man! His light shone around him, he couldn't see after the brightness of that light! I've got power, yet where is the power over this stinking flesh! And he's writing this saying, "Oh my goodness!" Maybe we just need a definition of law? What is law? It's a law! It's constant. Unless some revokes it, or changes it--it's a law, right?

Look what that verse says. Please look at what it says! " . . . when I would do good, evil is present with me."

If you get nothing else, I hope that you will get this . . .

You know, you get up in the morning, you want to be good. I ain't messing up! No way, Jose! You are determined to be good. I'm not saying you have to mess up--I'm just saying that there is a law here--that when you start to do good, you realize that evil is present with you. Now if you doubt your salvation--and you look back--you know He came in, but somehow you feel you lost it; I'm telling you, you didn't lose it. I'm telling you you need to grow in the Lord. You need to get enough of God in you to be more confident. And the very fact that when you try to do good, evil is with you--you recognize evil is with you--it says it is a law. That means that wherever you go--evil goes with you. It's immutable!

You know what? A man can even preach while thinking evil thoughts . . . evil is present with him. "Whenever I try to do good, evil is present with me."

I'm telling you. Get a hold of this.

Again, we are talking about the Law of the Mind

Why do you think pornography is so bad nowadays? It's always been bad--it's always been wicked and evil as hell, but it was kept in a corner somewhere. You had to sneak to get it. Now its everywhere. It's accepted. And that stuff ruins everything it comes into contact with. Well, why can't you stop--bless your little heart.

5. The Law of the members . . .

"But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members" (Romans 7:23).

You have a law in your members working against that mind--the good mind--the mind of Christ, the good person on the inside. Not the old person on the outside. There is a constant battle, because when you try to quit that stuff--that is a good thing to do--and that is when you recognize that evil is present with you. You'd be shocked to know how many little girls sneak and watch that stuff. We are talking about before, like 11 and 12 years old statistically.

Man, it effects your brain. It makes little paths. It's a drug! It's right up there with heroin and cocaine. You can't just quit it. You find out after a while just how evil this thing is. And it does everything contrary to what God wants you to do. It is against good--I'm telling you--it's so wicked that it'll even use a little good to get more feet in with the evil. It is slick! You say I'm personifying it ... I sure am!

6. The Law of the flesh . . .

Look at the conclusion that Paul makes

"I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin" (Romans 7:25).

Do you get that? With the mind you are serving God, right? With the flesh you serve sin. Whatever controls your mind controls your actions. If you have the mind of Christ, you have the power of Christ, to do what He wants you to do--not what the flesh wants you to do. Because you know it is not going to work.

So, if you are serving God, you know that this evil is present with you. It's a law. It's not going away!

Getting saved is the most wonderful thing in the world, but you are not out of the woods. You are saved, you are going to heaven, you have the power of God but you have to learn that as a saved individual, you have to grow to understand that what is preached from the pulpit--that people sometimes think it is mean--it is not mean. It is the preacher trying to get you to wake up to the sinfulness of your stinking flesh, and how it is out of control when it is in control of you.

Can we prove that Paul hated the flesh? Well, we looked at verse 25, but let's look at verse 24.

"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"

That body is killing him ... every time he tried to do good, evil was there. Paul's talking living in his own body. This flesh is driving him crazy. The law of the mind consents to the Law of Moses, but can not do it, because of the law of sin in the members.

"If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good . . . But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members" (Romans 7:16, 23).

What would you say? I would say that if a person that is saved, does not understand the two natures--was never discipled--you got some babes in Christ out there that are going out of their minds!

Once you are saved--you are saved! You are always saved! You are sealed with the Spirit of God!

God fixed it when He sealed us with His Holy Ghost. So that means anybody out there--any kid that really got saved, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 years old--for that little bit of life that they lived, they knew what was wrong and everything, and now that they are saved they don't want to do it. But all of a sudden, what was wrong before--you could put a multiplication sign there--it's multiplied by a thousand! All of a sudden they are saved and they are saying, 'Oh my goodness! What's going on?'

This is the story of the Apostle Paul, a little biography of what he went through. Now, prayerfully and hopefully, that Holy Spirit is praying for us, whether we want to pray for ourselves or not, or even know to--according to Romans--hopefully we'll cry out to God for help. And a lot of those, you go down south and everything, they don't have a lot of technical stuff--but they know when they got victory--and they know Who did it. And they are more in touch with the Holy Spirit than a lot of us Yankees are up here in the north.

They experienced it through deep prayer, knowing that they can do nothing without Christ.

You see, when you get to Philippians and these things that Paul is talking about he learned to be content, he did! And what we are talking about here is that connection. When you got converted--when you got saved--when that conversion happened, from night unto day you are trapped in a body of death. This body hates God, by the nature of the flesh. Don't forget that part. It is very, very important.

And the law of the Spirit, having power to deliver the believer from the law of sin which is in his members, and his conscience from condemnation by the Mosaic Law. Moreover the Spirit works in the yielded believer the very righteousness which Moses Law requires. What in the world does that mean? Well, what that means is the Christian that wants to do right and surrenders to the Holy Spirit, and prays, "Holy Spirit please help me, I need your help to do this thing." You are going to find out that that filling of the Holy Spirit, when you are walking in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the 'lusts of the flesh.'

But there is always good news!

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:2).

You see that? I like it.

"That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Romans 8:4).

So, left to itself, Christian, your flesh--no way can you please God--you've got to be fighting that thing all the time. And some of us are sick of fighting, we get lazy, we get laid back, and we get trapped. Over and over again. Why? We forget that it is not an occasional occurrence to the flesh. No, the flesh takes it serious. It's a law. It's serious! This flesh is serious. And Christians have to be serious--and our kids need to know that it is serious business.

You mean I have to do this for the rest of my life? Yea. Why? Because God told you. God warned you. Paul went through it and warned us.

And that is why when the preacher talks about idols, you better watch out, because if they effect you to the place where you don't like God--can't you see that that is an idol?--you are getting mad at God? Over what? And when you get mad at people--what do you do?--you shut them out.

And so we have to watch what we give our flesh to, because it may consume us to where we are not walking in the Spirit--and we think that everything is okay, because you have no battle. Down the line you are going to find out . . . you don't put anything above God.

The verses are correct, it is the application that is questionable. I would question your definition of a legalist. Some would say that it is the embodiment of a Pharisee--strict adherence to rules--and judging other people's faith based on using himself as an example. In this case, both parties may indeed be Christians, but I can tell you, I would make a poor example to follow by anyone.

In it's most basic sense legalism is insisting that a person can only be a Christian if they follow those rules.

Perhaps you can clarify what it is you say that gets you branded as a legalist?

By suggesting that in the New Covenant there exist a Law........some here refuse to believe any such exists under the New Covenant of Grace...........However, Paul clearly shows that Christ established the Law of Grace.......

They do not believe we have to obey anythintg resembling Law, such as the Commandments Christ gave the Church. It's too involved for a quick answer.......and the argument has gone on for 5 years........sooooo

Anyway........I was surprised to see you speaking of the Law of Grace..........but, we may differ on what that actually means..........to me it is quite simple.......the Commandments Christ gave the Disciples/Church during His Ministry are that Law, and they ARE to be obeyed............

To more than a few here........that makes me a Legalist, and that is OK with me.

The Law of Faith Established

This post is intended to be “food for thought only.”It is not intended to be a new Theology, or any such, it is simply some thoughts to be considered.

In my opinion, the New Covenant Law is the Law of Faith. I will explain how I came to believe this in the commentary below.I will provide Scripture support for my thoughts. To begin my commentary, I want to show how the Apostle Paul introduced this idea to the Church, and thus, to the world.

In Romans, Chapter 3; the Apostle reveals how the Law of the First Covenant is replaced by the Law of the New Covenant. Beginning in verse 19, the Apostle states that the Law of the First Covenant could not justify any man.
19) Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20) Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

The Apostle further explains: 21) But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22) Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Notice that he clearly states that the “righteousness of God without the Law” is now manifested, and it is being witnessed by the Law of the First Covenant and the Prophets. Where is this righteousness from? He states: “which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.” (see John 3:16)

He also explains in verse 23, that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Even so, we are “vs. 24) justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus ”We are justified by God through faith!"
25) Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26) To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Having explained this, the Apostle now states: 27) Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

The Apostle clearly states that no man can boast of his own righteousness by the First Covenant Law of works, for boasting has been “excluded.” And it has been excluded by the Law of Faith through Christ Jesus who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. (see Hebrews 12:2) He continues by stating: 28) Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. He is clear that man is only justified by FAITH without the DEEDS of the law. That law being the Frist Covenant Law of Moses.

It is also my opinion that the confusion surrounding this establishment of the Law of Faith comes from the last few verses of this Chapter, especially the very last verse.

29) Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: 30) Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. 31) Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

It is my opinion that verse 31 is the Apostles assertion that the Law of Faith, the New Covenant Law IS ESTABLISHED.

The Eleventh Chapter of Hebrews is often considered the Chapter of Faith. I will let you read this Chapter for yourselves. There is also a large body of Scripture concerning “faith” and the role it plays in God’s salvation plan for all mankind. I want to share some of those Scriptures with you for your consideration, and to show how the Law of Faith fits firmly into both God’s salvation plan and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Faith is defined in this way by the Author of Hebrews 11:1) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.......3) Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

The Apostle also stated to the Ephesians in Chapter 2:8) For by grace are ye saved THROUGH FAITH; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9) Not of works, lest any man should boast.

He states, in Romans, Chapter 10:13) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14) How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15) And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things, and he concludes by stating: 17) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Additional Scriptures for your consideration.

Hebrews 11:6) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Mark 11:22) And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

1 Corinthians 2:5) That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

2 Corinthians 5:7) (For we walk by faith, not by sight

Hebrews 10:22) Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23) Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised) 24) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:……………38) Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Luke 17:13) And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14) And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15) And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16) And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17) And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18) There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19) And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

Mark 10:47) And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. 48) And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me. 49) And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. 50) And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. 51) And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. 52) And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

2nd page

Mark 8:1) When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. 2) And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 3) And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4) And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

Matthew 9:20) And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21) For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 22) But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour............27) And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. 28) And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 29) Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 30) And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. 31) But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.

1 John 5:10) He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11) And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12) He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13) These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14) And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15) And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

James 5:13) Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14) Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15) And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16) Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

And, of course, I must include:

John 3:14) And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15) That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. ………… 36) He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 4:46) So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47) When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. 48) Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. 49) The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. 50) Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.51) And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. 52) Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53) So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. 54) This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

John 5:22) For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23) That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. 24) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life…………..37) And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38) And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39) Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40) And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Mark 9:19) He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20) And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21) And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22) And oft times it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23) Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24) And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25) When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26) And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27) But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

In conclusion, let me say; Faith is dynamic, powerful, and wondrous to those that believe in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

For all who actually read through this, thank you for your consideration of my thoughts, and may God bless you.

Pretty much says it all for me......

The liberal 'Christian' likes to insist that a 'legalist' is someone that lives by a strict moral code and lords it over all they meet--the 'holier than thou' Pharisee crowd.

Biblical Christians DO try to live by the rules and please God, not FOR salvation, but because the ARE saved!

"How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying" (I Corinthians 14:26).

Rick Warren uses something like 33 different translations in his book, 'The Purpose Driven Life,' in order that he too can make any point he wants to make and has some verse to back it up.
