What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Romans 6 shows us the essential truth that every believer needs to grasp in order to live victoriously in this life! There is a prescribed order that God created and it takes faith in the cross of Christ to access it. We must understand that this is not a work such as water baptism, but this is a spiritual baptism into Christ, yes when you got saved God went back in time and placed you IN CHRIST on the cross, hence the death of the old man! You are now as Paul would say numerous times IN CHRIST Literally!

Now notice the first verse Paul states a question, we get ridiculed a lot because we say you don't have to "earn" Gods grace, I believe Paul seemed a little frustrated that people would accuse him of saying sin all you want. We cheapen the cross when say its Christ plus me, but in reality its Christ plus nothing! No its not sin all you want, and no its not work all you can to merit Gods love. The Holy Spirit will only work in your life when you come to an end of your works and start depending on Jesus for EVERYTHING you need. I don't want this to be too long but would like to discuss this chapter and how sin loses its power because of grace (Jesus).

How shall we continue in sin? DONT YOU KNOW?! We are Crucified with Christ! He that is dead is freed from sin! I know there is a lot more that can be explained and time wont allow right now, yall be blessed!

Greetings from a fellow new member here. I see you haven't had any responses to this important topic yet...as it is not a very popular topic.

So let's begin...

I think we need to look at Romans 6 together with Romans 7 and 8. It is a progression from being someone sold out for sin and one who is sold out for God AND able to overcome as Jesus did.

Rom. 6 shows the beginning of the salvation process...from walking in our own strength...to walking in the same power that raised Jesus from the dead (Rom.8)

6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

The chapter begins as an admonition as to a spiritual newbie....should we continue in sin? Pretty basic flaw if one does this and it reveals a very early grasp of the work of Christ in a believer.

The next idea is that we were baptized into His death. Baptism is ,again, the beginning of something...a first taste.

And there is the idea of newness of life. It this was something we had experience of it wouldn't be new. :)
 
I would like to continue with the chapter...with the idea that this is about the beginnings of coming to grips with the high calling in Christ...which consists of walking in the same power that Jesus did when He walked among us. This is the training of God.

5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be [a]done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been [b]freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

At this point the new believer is NOT YET walking in resurrection life. It remains to experience what a continued forsaking of the things of this world feels like. We are seeing a principle here...first death...then life. Many believers think the life part only comes in after physical death. But that is not the Christian walk. We can experience eternal life right now by carrying the death of Jesus...AND the showing forth of the life of Jesus.

Until our sacrifice on the altar is accepted and we are permitted into the fulness of the walk in Christ...we must reckon (act as if) ourselves dead to sin.

A person who IS dead to sin doesn't have to reckon it so. So then this chapter is relating to the beginning of a work...not a completed work. But He who has begun a good work in us is faithful to continue it...if we let Him...until it is completed.

The biggest danger here is to think we have arrived at something before we are walking in the full power of grace. We can stop the process anytime...by declaring (even in our half-baked state) that we are ready for whatever comes our way. I think the foolish virgins are revealed in this tendency.
 
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were [e]delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness or holiness.


Speaking as to carnal babes...in human terms since babes are not ready to be related to in spiritual terms...yet. :)
 
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Again, many think that eternal life is after a physical death...but we are talking about life IN Christ. That life is for now.
 
Actually verse 5 in the above citation says "united" together in the likeness of His death...but it could say "planted" together in the likeness of His death...which gives the idea that we are sowing to the Spirit...but not yet reaping, as we shall see....
