I would like to meditate on this particular verse from Paul's letter to the Romans.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Now, some questions, for me and for others here:

Do we really trust that God works for our good in ALL things, circumstances, trials and tribulations?

Do we really trust that God has called us according to His purpose?

Sometimes, I struggle with this...but I know that God is working anyway, so I can trust Him, and have faith that he will find a way. It's not our circumstances that define our faith.

Anyone else have anything to add?

Romans 8:

We need to always remember that the "all things" that "work together for good" is in the sense of 'continually' - and, more particularly, "the end result" -- not necessarily "in the meanwhile"... ;)

I think you summed it up well.
 
I see it as God continually working all things for our good. It is not that God causes bad things to happen and somehow these bad things will teach us or mold us for his good.

God didn't cause the bad thing that happened but he is on your side working to turn that thing into something good.

If my daughter burns her hand on the stove, I will use that bad experience for her good. I will teach her something that will prevent that same thing from happening again. I did not however turn on the stove with the intention of burning her so she could learn. That's the difference.

A young child dies in a car wreck. God didn't orchestrate events to cause that child to die. He will however use that event that causes hearts to be softened and to look to him for comfort. Some might get saved or rededicate their lives because of it. God is working for good even in the midst of that crisis that he didn't cause.

It depends on which part of me you're asking. My flesh doesn't. My spirit definitely does. Life experience proves it, so my brain knows it.

That's my go-to verse, because of how much I've seen -- over the long haul -- shows the truth of it. It's also my goal verse, because a part of me still has a problem believing it.
 
It is one of my all time favourite verses. Also it reminds me of Joseph's story, where his brother's sell him as a slave and all sorts of disasters befall him, but he is in a position to save his brothers ultimately. [SUP]20 [/SUP]You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. Genesis:50

I wanted to echo what others have said that although bad things happen and those things are not orchestrated by God, God can bring good out of them. We do not see the full picture and I don't believe we will necessarily see the full picture this side of heaven. God is making a beautiful tapestry but we can't see the full picture.

Concerning Joseph, I would like to add that God may indeed place is in difficult situations. This is however in no way like saying that God causes tornadoes or hurricanes that destroy people, or that God causes a car wreck that ends a life way too soon. I look at John 10:10 as the dividing line. If it kills, steals, or destroys ,it comes from the enemy.

In the case of Joseph, I can't say for sure how much of it that God orchestrated or how much of it God simply turned into something good. I do believe that Joseph's brothers meant evil for him and this didn't come from God. I also believe that God used their wickedness and turned it to good for many. The one thing we see all through the story is God working good for Joseph and good for others through him. We do not see those events destroying his life, killing or stealing from him.
 
There is no promise that all things will be pleasant or enjoyable as we experience them!

The promise is that for those who consider it to be their purpose to serve God; God will turn all things yo work for our benefit.

Even if our death (in our earthly life) is one of the things ( included in all things); God will turn even that to our advantage!
 
Joseph is an awesome example Pilkington.


God does allow certain things to happen but HE always turns it to good for those who are called according to His purpose. Jeremiah, was thrown in a pit, Daniel in the lions den, Elijah fled for his life. In all of these events, God took what was meant for bad and made them good! And look how they are all still witnessing to us today through His word. That is not just good! That is good for everyone!

We must accept the absolute sovereignty of God in this verse. The only part we play in it,is to LOVE God. (a KEY role) . God is in control of all things for the good or bad of/for people. and the "elect" of vs.29-30 are the ones "called' In v28 . If you don't accept God's election in LOVE, you will abuse the context of v.28. One can only rejoice in v28 if one believes the truth of vs.29-30. So,, do you really love, obey God? And are you really the saved "called", according to his purpose of electing love? Love to all, Hoffco
