The article says he could get 25 years in prison, that is equivalent to what most people convicted of 2nd degree murder get.
From the Guardian article "A trial for Matar on federal terrorism-related charges is scheduled for later in US district court in Buffalo. "
The allegation is that he was acting on behalf of Hezbollah.

Maybe one day I'll read the book just to see what all the fuss is about

I can predict how this story ends.
After Trump, Iran takes X American hostages and gets their agent back to live a life of relative comfort in Iran....
It's just crazy that they're trying to kill him over a book he wrote 30 years ago

I am reminded of the old prayer "Lord, protect me from your followers".
But in this case, sadly, they don't follow Jesus.
IIRC in John's gospel the High Priest discusses the possibility of executing Lazarus, to protect the faithful...
Oh. Rushdie is an Atheist, and public atheists are being murdered across the ME and Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The Koran offers zero protection for Atheists.

I was in my early teens when the Iranian mobsters issued the fatwa against Rushdie. We already had a bad history with Iran from before, and this was just another piling up on the thing.

Few years later, I had a pen pal, snail mail, from Sweden. I knew Swedish already back then, and she wrote me that there had been an incident with one of Rushdie’s publishers in Norway. It was an attempted murder. From what I know the case is still somewhat pending.

Anyway, my point is that you can’t trust Iran in any way whatsoever. If Trump has a good plan (of which I’m not certain), I’ll say wipe all of their warfare programs out.

Yeah, they don't believe in turning the other cheek, that's for sure.
A fatwa was issued by the then Ayatollah after the book, The Satanic Verses, was published.

That fatwa stays active for as long as he lives.

I hope the attacker gets the maximum.
