Yes Jesus spoke these words, but He isn't giving a list of do's and don'ts to achieve salvation. Rather, He is giving a list of behaviors that characterize how sheep live as opposed to how goats live. To believe otherwise invalidates salvation by grace and makes salvation contingent upon works. This is contrary to Ephesians 2:8-9.
You say it’s contrary to Eph 2:8-9, but I disagree. I don’t see any conflict between the two passages. In Matt 25:31~46 Jesus is giving his answer to one question. The author of Ephesians is giving an answer to a different question.

It's only contrary when misunderstood and when one makes what is spoken of in Matthew requirements for salvation.

They are requirements for salvation. What else can Jesus be saying, if not that?

The passage you quote from Ephesians is telling us where the gift came from that has given us the ability to perform works of mercy. Jesus is telling us that, now we have been given that ability, we are required to make use of it.

Sure, but not to acquire or maintain salvation. Ephesians 2:10 explains what Jesus means.

It’s perfectly true that Jesus doesn’t use the word “salvation” in these verses. In fact the Greek word for “salvation,” σωτηρία (sótéria), doesn’t appear in Matthew at all. It’s a word that occurs frequently in Acts and the Epistles but hardly at all in the Gospels. What Jesus says is that the righteous, the “sheep,” are told (in this translation), “Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world,” whereas the “goats” are “sent off to eternal punishment, but the righteous will go to eternal life.”

worship in spirit
What does worship in the Spirit mean?

Paul mentions two types of worship and prayer that a Christian can employ.

Prayer and Worship with the Spirit

Praying or singing in an unlearned spiritual language or tongues where the human mind is inactive or unfruitful to others.

Direct communion with God for personal edification and expressing mysteries to Him privately, though it does not instruct listeners.

Prayer and Worship with the Mind

Praying, singing, and speaking using clear, intelligible human words that the intellect can comprehend.

Corporate instruction, mutual building up of the church body, and allowing others to understand and join in with an "Amen".

Which one are you referring to?

do we only receive one grace of God?

thks
Grace is God's undeserved favour. In that sense it is what lexicographers call a "mass noun". The nearest we get to a verse that says there is more than one grace is this:

(Joh 1:16 NKJV) And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

I understand that the verse means God gives more of His grace, nit several graces. Plural graces are found in Greek mythology, not in the Bible. But the mythological graces were not undeserved favour, but things like beauty, joy and music.

The second clause clarifies the first clause and does not negate it. A better analogy would be, "he who takes his medication and washes it down with water will be made well but he who does not take his medication will remain sick."

Of course, it logically follows that we wash down medication with water, yet if no water is available and we take it dry (been there, done that) we will still be made well BECAUSE OF THE MEDICATION (and not because of the water). It's the same with baptism.

It logically follows that we get baptized after we believe, but if you are on your death bed and cannot get water baptized before your death, you will still be saved because you BELIEVE which is in harmony with Mark 16:16(b) ..but he who does not believe will be condemned and is also in harmony with ( John 3:15,16,18; 5:24; 6:29,40,47; 11:25,26)

*NOWHERE does the Bible say, "water baptized or condemned.
That’s the best example i have ever heard, wow.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Thank you for pointing that out, David. I was once looking for an answer to the same question, “Is there any mention in the NT of any one specific ‘grace,’ as opposed to grace in general?”, but I never noticed John 1:16 in that context.

The two verses that I did wonder about are 2 Cor 1:15, literally “... that you might have a second grace,” and Eph 3:8, “To me was given this grace, to preach to the Gentiles,” where the words “second” and “this,” respectively, might seem to imply some kind of classification of graces. However, in a few commentaries I looked at I found not a single word of support for that idea, which was quite a relief, although it didn’t really surprise me.

Bare profession of faith. (James 2:14)

Obedience from a regenerate heart does not make you a legalist, yet seeking salvation by works is not obedience. Legalism is the belief that one can earn or merit salvation through law keeping or good works, rather than by grace through faith.

Those who are born of God are not longing for the sins of this world. 1 John 3:9 - No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

In John 8:11, Jesus did not condemn the woman caught in adultery yet told her to go and sin no more/leave her life of sin, namely, she had been practicing adultery.

I don't cherry pick and here is the balanced view of faith and works. Man is saved through faith and not by works (Ephesians 2:8,9; yet genuine faith is (evidenced) by works. (James 2:14-26)

*Jesus Christ saves us through faith based on the merits of His finished work of redemption "alone" and not based on the merits of our works.* (Romans 3:24-28; Titus 3:5; 2 Timothy 1:9) ✝️

It is through faith "in Jesus Christ alone" (and not based on the merits of our works) that we are justified on account of Christ (Romans 4:5-6; 5:1; 5:9); yet the faith that justifies does not remain alone (unfruitful, barren) if it is genuine. (James 2:14-26) *Perfect Harmony*
I said it a long time ago.
Faith and works should not be seperated.
You said faith that justifies does not remain alone if it is genuine..
I agree.. works will accompany true faith.

If you are doing works to gain merit and earn salvation then your faith in Jesus is lacking..
But if you claim to have faith in Jesus and your works are contrary or bearing fruits that are not righteous then your faith is dead.

Perfect harmony = faith and works.

Your works are not done to earn salvation. They are done because you love your saviour.

Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.

All Scripture is inspired by God to provide us with doctrine, correction, and instruction in righteousness, so that we may be "thoroughly furnished unto all good works" 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

We are encouraged to be a "pattern of good works," showing sincerity and sound speech that cannot be condemned Titus 2:7-8.

Works are the outward evidence of an inward union with Christ. Just as a plant is known by its fruit, a Christian is known by their deeds.

The Bible teaches that faith without works is dead, being alone James 2:17. True belief is a "work of God" John 6:29.

Letting Your Light Shine: Christ commands us to let our light shine before men, so that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven Matthew 5:16.

Engaging in righteous works and meditating on God's Word provides a shield against the temptations of the enemy. When we hide God’s Word in our hearts, it acts as a safeguard, helping us not to sin against Him Psalm 119:11.

God will bring every work into judgment Ecclesiastes 12:14, and when Christ returns, His reward is with Him to give to every man according to his work. Revelation 22:12.

The Conclusion: The whole duty of man is to "fear God, and keep his commandments" Ecclesiastes 12:13.

May the God of peace make you "perfect in every good work to do his will," working in you that which is well pleasing in His sight Hebrews 13:20-21

Works, righteous works, good works are not against faith or against God's will.

But works done to make ourselves great or to gain salvation, to earn or purchase salvation is not God's will. We will never boast, all glory belongs to Christ.

I agree justification is a free gift after that we must participate

the grace of justification provides us with union in Christ

Jn 15:5 apart from Christ?

NOTHING!

phil 4:13 Union with Christ?

ALL THINGS!

acts 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

Lk 1:75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

thks
Yes, we participate in growth and sanctification, but we are preserved by the power of God though faith. So that is Grace too.

That's why we have a High Priest. Because we always need grace.

Which one are you referring to?
If you are going to offer a false dichotomy, at least present scripture to define them.

Your first choice is simply a claim of esoteric and metaphysical abilities hence impossible to measure its validity.

Your second choice is a matter of personal judgement. IOW, one person's "mutual building up" is another person's labor in vain.

Mark 7:7

In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

Both of your options can be vain.

If works are required before one can be saved, how could the the thief on the cross be saved? He embraced Jesus by faith and then died within a few hours, he had no chance to do any good works or to obey any command of God.
Jesus can forgive anyone at any moment. Jesus also reminded us of the new covenant which is a sacramental moment in eternity to DO which is works of his plan, but by participating your obedience is WORKS in doing the sacramental of his death to remind us of his saving grace.

Do religious men decide what works you are to do?

Or, does God provide unexpected situations in which we find ourselves and we must choose to do a work?

......
Men, aka yourself does the WORK in OBEDIENCE to do Jesus command to remember him for eternity of his death. By doing his command of the sacraments of his covenant, the Giving thanks to God in communion. Which only a high priest can do and a high priest who entrust this sacrament for the body of church aka the people walking with God. Walking is WORKING.

Are you one of those who say baptism with the Matthew 28:19-20 formula is Wrong? That is the way the church has done it
Baptism is our first christian 101 in the body of Christ.......Men, aka yourself does the WORK in OBEDIENCE to do Jesus command to remember him for eternity of his death.
