I want to add this though:
If you want to find out what a person is truly about, then pay more attention to their actions than their words. Words are meaingless if there is nothing to back them up. That goes for anything a person claims to be.
Unfortunately, some do claim to be Christians, but it means nothing to them. It's just a label. That's as far as it goes. In which case, the above applies. No one is perfect, but you can see where their heart is.

niceguyJ summed up mostly what I was going to say. That's basically only between the person and God. But God did give us a few clues to help us know if there is a false Christian in our dwelling.
Faith and works go hand in hand. You can't have works to get to heaven, and you can't have faith that doesn't produce works. James 2:26, "As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead." (I'd suggest reading all of James 2 14-26) So first you can try to tell if he (or if you want to search your own heart) is a Christian by the works that they do. Specifically, look at the fruit of the spirit. Do they show the fruit in their everyday lives? Are they loving? Do they show patience? Do they try to stay peaceful? And so forth.

Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.
Galations 5:19 tells what the works of the flesh are. Hope that helps.

Salvation in a person is essentially a spiritual process, so we can't really see this work. However, the EVIDENCE of this Work is also the willingness of the person to walk according to God's ways and His words. Hence, I would walk up to to the person and ask whether he has 'make Jesus Christ the Lord & Savior of his life'. Normally, his response is a good indication (but not 100%) of his Salvation.
