In 'Chapter 6, verse 20 - 21, Paul talks to Timothy of 'oppositions to science falsely so called'.

Can anyone clarify what the meaning of this is? I really can't understand it at all.

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care.

Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. Grace be with you all.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6:20-21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

i think he’s saying keep the faith of the gospel and tongs we’ve taught you and don’t be drawn away into worldly sciences proclaiming to be the real truth .

remember Greece and then rome is where science really exploded into the modern world of tech we know now. And science was becoming peoples faith through philosophies and messages of science proven through scientific methods and experiments

science is good and God gave us the ability to understand things but science can also lead us away from faith , which isn’t a science because it’s of things unseen and have to be heard and believed.

ive known people who use science and what it says , as argument against God and what he’s said. I think he’s warnkng Timothy to stick to the faith and not trust in scientific philosophy which was prevelant and apparently had led some astray

Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.

the kjv says it like this

“O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust,

avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6:20-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Many people then and now try to use "science" to disprove the Bible and so turn people from God. Many lies have been told in the name of "Science" but none have ever been able to prove the Bible wrong. There is good and bad science. Christians need to be careful about what they accept as truth from scientists. Their lies can be very deceptive.

MaryM,

I appreciate your question. There are probably others who wonder the same thing.

The application can be made now more than any time in history.
As an American who grew up in a secular public school system, I noticed that "science" was and continues to be a popular false god of choice.

Americans are far more trusting of those who are exalted as the experts in fields of science and medicine than they are the true living God of our Bible.

My first sciences books were on the subject of evolution. They lured me to them with dinosaurs. Preschool began at 4 so that's when faith in God's Word was first attacked. That makes quite an impression on a 4 year old. At 5, I checked out of a Washington state library, Darwin's Origin of Species for children. I was a hard core evolutionist until I got saved in highschool. Evolution is a "science falsely so called."

At a point after I trusted Christ as my Savior, I decided to repent (change my mind) about that and spend my college years on a journey of learning true sciences. My major was in animal sciences and veterinary medicine .

I also learned that much of what passes for scientific research and medical treatments are also science falsely so called. The COVID scare was a type of voodoo which convinced many to sacrifice their lives to those false gods of medical science.... falsely so called science.

Does that make sense MaryM?
🍵🥱👍

BTW it's after 5AM as I write this post.
Why?
Because a family member suffered from so called science. It was worse than voodoo. There are a lot of sleepless families suffering because of so called science.

I partly agree.

When it comes to the COVID crisis, I think the vaccinations saved lives.

That may be so, but they've also taken a lot of lives and left others in ruin. I don't think making people take experimental drugs is a good thing EVER. Give me the choice, that's what I care about. If you want the vaccine then great, get a monthly booster too, I am 100% for the freedom to do that. Heck join medical studies and get paid to take all kinds of untested medicines, you're free, have at it. However if I don't want to take it, get out of my face about it. You cannot make me take a tried and tested vaccine, let alone one we have no clue about possible side effects or effectiveness to do what they say it does. So maybe the vaccine did save lives, we know it took some, but the REAL question is can the government make us take them because they say so?

Great question as always Mary.
Taking in consideration when this was written, this is referring to the sorcery, or satanic cults back then or even sects like Gnostics.
Because people back then had limited understanding and knowledge to express certain ideas into somewhat precise words.
Because 'lighting a fire' or 'inventing the wheel' was considered high-end science in their day without them realizing it maybe.

This is the interpretation of this verse in my church anyway. Always love you questions which are very unique.

Honestly the Bible isn’t hard to understand it just had a lot to say and it all has order , it’s really basic information true and relevant i formation about God and mankind and the relationship between them .

It seems difficult because we can’t see and touch and prove everything it says we have to hear it and believe it’s true …..not seeing it but trusting in it.

also because we have the perception that it’s mysterious and hard to grasp and so we try to pluck a single verse looking for a great revelation in each line. Instead of reading it like for instance the epistles that make up the new testement.

They are complete letters addressed to the church of Jesus Christ written by his chosen apostles who were of the first generation of jewish believers who then converted gentiles by the gospel.

So if we were to read them as if they aren’t mystery needing to be secretly decoded by someone

rather like it’s the lord speaking to believers plainly teaching them and employing them to believe him and be saved

even through the apostles he was speaking plainly like this I’m just choosing a section to show you what I’m saying see this is really easy to understand what’s bieng said it’s just hard to accept as the truth spoken to the person hearing it.

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

( becoming harder to hear )

For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.

( so loud I’ve become deaf now can’t hear it )

For you were once darkness,

but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. ……..Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:1-10, 15-16, 21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

if I approach Galatians five like this reading it as if he’s “saying something “ looking at what he’s really saying in a whole long letter to the chrich of believers real biblical doctrine. without thinking we can’t understand what they are saying beforehand so we never really try to understand it.

even like the Ten Commandments don’t kill don’t lie and cheat and steal …all easy stuff to grasp but humans don’t always find an easy time keeping those things . Understanding isn’t the issue I feel it’s more not willing to accept what we hear

Isaac newton was the ultimate scientist. But he is Cristian. He was going about his life with various other scientists who didn't believe in god and ,said its impossible to build a world in seven days. With that over the weekend he built some kind of structure. When the other scientists came in on the Monday. They were blown over buy this manmade structure, where did it come from isaac said I made it over the weekend again blown away gobsmacked impossible but it wasn't impossible as isaac made it . So he tells them all you think its impossible for me to make that over the weekend why couldn't god make a world in seven days. No answer to his question, Douglas McDougal another scientist believes in god so he did a yest on weather the body had a soul. So he set up some scales people with limes illnesses with a short life span when they passed the body got lighter between 1gram up to 3/4 of a once,so something happened, he also tried it with animal's but nothing changed. You scientists keep proving themselves wrong.again I apologise for my spelling and grammar no schooling lol god bless to you

Any knowledge that goes against the word of God is a false science.

1Tim 6:20 . . Avoid impious and vain babblings, and oppositions of science
falsely so called

The Greek word translated "science" basically means knowing.

For example; mechanics know cars, ranchers know cattle, and welding
engineers know metals. Those kinds of knowing are disciplined, i.e. they're
proven reliable by trial, error, and practice.

And then there's the undisciplined category of knowing called "theoretical"
which refers to unproven posits, ideas, imaginations, and concepts; for example
the Drake Equation, the Fermi Paradox, Darwinian Evolution, and the so-called
Big Bang.

Another kind of knowing to be wary of is so-called common sense. For
example: one day at work a man in the break room said it's arrogant to
assume there is no other intelligent life in the universe but that found on
earth.

You know why he said that? Because he heard it said first by someone
he admires, ergo: he was perpetuating a logical fallacy in the form of a
respectable opinion; which goes to show that if an idea is repeated often
enough, widely enough, and loud enough by people held in high enough
esteem; pretty soon it's accepted by the masses as fact without thought or
question. (the Asch Conformity Phenomenon)

NOTE: On June 28, 2024, The US Supreme Court overturned a long held
opinion so-called the Chevron Deference Doctrine, which was basically an
argument from authority, i.e. a logical fallacy which supposes that
someone's position, or their credential, makes their views more important
and/or more likely to be correct than the views of lesser folks.

In a nutshell; just because someone is high up on the "expert" totem pole
does not make them eo ipso right.

1 Tim 6

20 Timothy, God has trusted you with many things. Keep these things safe. Stay away from people who talk about useless things that are not from God and who argue against you with a “knowledge” that is not knowledge at all.

21 Some people who claim to have that “knowledge” have gone completely away from what we believe.

The knowledge here is Spiritual knowledge ---not Worldly knowledge

Strong's Concordance

knowledge: the knowledge of God, such as is offered in the gospel

the higher knowledge of Christian and divine things which false teachers boast of 1 Timothy 6:20 moral wisdom, such as is seen in right living,

If you read the Whole Chapter it gives very clearly the meaning ------Scripture will always answer Scripture if you read the whole context and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and revelation of the Truth behind the message

I must read up on Isaac Newton, as I meant to do. Personally I see no problems between science and God's work - to me they are the same. Many scientists are Christians as are many doctors.

On the other matter, I actually did read about those experiments where when people passed away it was shown they were lighter. It's fascinating.

(excerpt)

Oppositions of science falsely so called.--Rather, of knowledge falsely so called. These "oppositions" have been supposed by some to be a special allusion to some of the Gnostic theories of the opposition between the Law and the Gospel, of which peculiar school, later, Marcion was the great teacher. It is hardly likely that any definite Gnostic teaching had as yet been heard in Ephesus, but there is little doubt that the seeds of much of the Gnosticism of the next century were--when St. Paul wrote to Timothy--being then sown in some of the Jewish schools of Ephesus and the neighbouring cities. (Comp. the allusions to these Jewish and cabalistic schools in St. Paul's letter to the Colossian Church.) The "oppositions" here may be understood as referring generally to the theories of the false teachers, who were undermining the doctrine of St. Paul as taught by Timothy.

(here)

1 TIMOTHY 6:20 MEANING - King James Bible Online

IMO, the "science" mentioned is not science as we know it today, but is speaking of "knowledge."

The Complete Jewish Bible says:

20 Oh, Timothy! Keep safe what has been entrusted to you. Turn away from the ungodly babblings and the argumentative opposition of what is falsely called “knowledge.” 21 For many who promise this “knowledge” have missed the mark, as far as the faith is concerned. Grace be with you.

This is one of those few texts in the Bible which are known to the writer and receiver of the letter or gospel but are not known by us, I think.

To understand it one must go back to what is written in the Greek text, and see what "science" means in that context. That word is gnosis which literally means knowledge, but in this context it means philosophical or Gnostic theories promoted by false teachers. They claimed to have esoteric knowledge, but it opposed Gospel truth. Gnosticism was a great enemy of Bible Christianity.

The best way to view science is that man is discovering GOD’s blue prints.

Obviously, the scientific theories that suggest no Creator is not true!

Man desires immortality through the tree of knowledge..

There is still a great a mystery to GOD.. we are the pottery of the Great potter. Describing the clay used to other pieces of pottery is not gonna change that.

GOD created us to abide in this mortal realm…

In 'Chapter 6, verse 20 - 21, Paul talks to Timothy of 'oppositions to science falsely so called'.

Can anyone clarify what the meaning of this is? I really can't understand it at all.
1 Timothy 6:

20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith.

The phrase "oppositions of science falsely so called" is referring to things that oppose [real] 'science' that are called 'science' but that are not [real] 'science'. (falsely called 'science' - but, not real 'science' - in opposition to real 'science')

The word 'science' in verse 20, according to Strong's Concordance, means "[the act of] knowing" (i.e., by implication, knowledge).

That being the case, this could possibly apply to more than just what we think of in terms of modern science. However, it should also be considered significant that the translators chose the word 'science' for this particular verse when the original Greek word is found in many verses translated as 'knowledge'.

The word 'science' is found in one other place in the Bible - Daniel 1:4 - and, the original Hebrew word has a similar meaning "inteligence or consciousness" - translated as 'knowledge', 'science', and 'thought'.

So, I am thinking that the word 'science' in both of these verses does in fact [at least] "lean" toward what we think of as 'science'.
