The Intent of Temptation

"The intent of temptation is to entice you to please yourself instead of being obedient to God and His Word(examples of giving in to temptation: Gen 3:1-7; 2 Samuel 11; example of not giving in to temptation: Matt 4:3-11). Temptation is directed by Satan(2 Cor 11:3; 1 Thess 3:5) to appeal to your flesh(gratification of your desires/or living by your self-centered feelings) (James 1:14). However, the decision to sin or to obey God's Word and resist temptation victoriously is yours(Joshua 24:15; Psalm 119:101; Rom 6:12-22; 1 Cor 6:18-20; Gal 516-17)"

Tests And Related Sufferings

"Tests and related sufferings are common to every follower of Jesus. These trials enable you to share the sufferings of Christ and allow you to follow His example of obedient, sacrificial living(Rom 8:17; 2 Cor 6:4-11; Phil 1:29; Heb 5:8; 1 Pet 2:19-21; 4:12). While you may be distressed in various test, any suffering you experience is not to be compared to the value of knowing Jesus Christ(Phil 3:8-10) and cannot compare with the glory that is to be revealed(Rom 8:18; 2 Cor 4:16-18). Any suffering that you have is just for a little while; and God promises to perfect(mature), confirm, strengthen and establish you after you experience this suffering(1 Pet 5:10)"

Prayerful And Purposeful Action

"Making Biblical changes in your life requires prayerful and purposeful action(based on Matt 7:24-25; Rom 6:12-13; Col 3:5-14; 1 Thess 5:17; Titus 2:11-12; James 1:22-25)"

"Respond Immediately To Any Need For Biblical Change(Psalm 37:27; Prov 3:5-8; Rom 6:1-4; Eph 4:22-24; Col 3:5-14; Titus 2:11-12; James 1:22-25)

- Ask God for wisdom(James 1:5)
- Be subject to(place yourself under the control of) the Holy Spirit, who dwells within you(John 14:15-18, 26; Rom 8:9-11; Gal 5:16; Eph 5:18)
- Conduct a thorough self-evaluation and make a list of all the ways you have failed to think, speak and act in a biblical manner. These are your "put-offs" as identified by God in His Word(for example: Rom 6:12-14; Eph 4:25-31; Col 3:8-9)
- Confess these unbiblical deeds(thoughts, words and actions) to the Lord(based on Matt 7:1-5; 1 Cor 11:31; 1 John 1:9)
- Make a list of the biblical "put-ons" that are to replace your unbiblical thoughts, words and actions(based on Rom 6:19; Eph 4:25, 28-29, 32; Col 3:10, 12-17; 2 Pet 1:5-8)
- Develop a Basic Plan for living a changed life on a daily basis. Your Basic Plan should list specific steps by which your sinful "put-offs" are replaced by biblical "put-ons" (based on Eph 2:10; 4:1, 25-32; Col 2:6; 3:1-17)"

Basic Plan For Living A Changed Life

"Develop a Basic Plan for living a changed life on a daily basis. Your basic plan should list specific steps by which your sinful "put-offs" are replaced by biblical "put-ons" (based on Eph 2:10; 4:1, 25-32; Col 2:6; 3:1-17) and should include:

- Prayer(Phil 4:6-7; Col 4:2; 1 Thess 5:17)
- Study of Scripture, especially to find out how God's Word relates to changes necessary in your life(2 Tim 2:15)
- Scripture memory, which should be focused on God's answers to the temptation(s) in which you are prone to sin(Psalm 119:11)
- Avoidance of all forms(i.e., the appearance) of evil(1 Thess 5:22)
- Obediance to God in all things(Matt 7:24; John 14:15; 1 John 5:3) instead of pleasing "self" by gratifying fleshly desires(Gal 5:16-17; 2 Tim 2:22a; Titus 2:12)
- Consistent and faithful fellowship, worship and ministry in the body of Christ(Heb 10:24-25; 1 Pet 4:10)
- Continual Biblical Self-Evaluation(Matt 7:1-5; 1 Cor 11:31) dealing with thoughts(2 Cor 10:5; Phil 4:8-9; Col 3:1-2), words(Eph 4:29; Col 4:6) and actions(Matt 5:16; Eph 2:10; Col 1:10)."

Questions For Biblical Self-Evaluation

"Continual biblical self-evaluation(Matt 7:1-5; 1 Cor 11:31) dealing with thoughts(2 Cor 10:5; Phil 4:8-9; Col 3:1-2), words(Eph 4:29; Col 4:6) and actions(Matt 5:16; Eph 2:10; Col 1:10). In biblically evaluating your thoughts, words or actions in any situation, answer the following questions...

- Is this profitable(in other words, does this contribute towards the development of godly traits or help to accomplish biblical responsibilities in my life or in the lives of others) (1 Cor 6:12; 10:23a)?
- Does this bring me under its power or am I controlled by it in any way(1 Cor 6:12)?
- Is this an area of spiritual weakness(a stumbling block) in my life(Matt 5:29-30; 18:8-9)?
- Could this lead another believer in Christ to stumble(Rom 14:13; 1 Cor 8:9-13)?
- Does this edify(build up) others or, stated in another way, is this the biblically loving thing to do(Rom 14:19; 1 Cor 10:23-24)?
- Does this glorify God(Matt 5:16; 1 Cor 10:31)?"
