Hey everyone.

I posted this in the Christian Ladies forum as well, but would appreciate everyone's prayers.

I've been here for just under a week now, and I've been thinking about writing this the entire time. It's my story... it's where I am right now. I'm asking for understanding, prayers, and maybe holding off on the snap judgments. So, here it is.

My husband and I were best friends for a year before we even thought about "dating". There was no one on this earth I could talk to about more things and feel completely safe. We didn't really start dating in the traditional sense of the word. We just went from being friends... to being friends who loved each other romantically, if that makes any sense. He proposed to me at the end of a Christian conference called Chrysalis Crossroads, where he felt like he heard God say it was alright to marry me. :) We were married in December of 2004.

The first three years went about like most new marriages do. We had our spats. We had our laughs. We were working through the troubles all newlyweds face. We both got jobs, me teaching and him as a security officer at a casino, and bought a house. We were both members at my father's church. He got along with my family and I and his mother were (and still are) very close.

I noticed him growing distant, but thought it was the stress of his job. He was promoted through the ranks to manager, the youngest in the industry. He worked nights and slowly stopped going to church. Then in August of 2007 he called me out of the blue from work saying he wanted a separation. I was floored.... He moved out the next month, but we kept trying to work things.

In October, I found out that he had been having an affair. The other woman actually e-mailed me because he had just broken it off with her (hell hath no fury, right?). I confronted him with it and he told me everything. Still, he stayed moved out until January of 2008.

I forgave him and we began to try and work through our issues. He still wanted to go out drinking constantly with his "casino buddies" which caused so many fights between us. In February, we unexpectedly got pregnant. Despite the surprise of it, we were both thrilled and he started going out less in expectation of being a father. Then we lost the baby to miscarriage at only two months along.

Things seemed to disintegrate from there. He began drinking heavily, coming home to rant and rage at me when I didn't respond to him the way he thought I should. He refused to come to church or stop going out. But I stayed. I felt very clearly at that time that God was telling me to "just love him." There were constant fights over him contacting other women over text, e-mail, and messenger but it never escalated to another affair. I would find porn saved on the computer, and we would fight over that as well.

He got a wakeup call when he was arrested on a DUI 1st offense in 2009. He's always been very prideful about his lawfulness (he has always wanted to work in law enforcement) so it was a slap in the face that he needed. He gave up alcohol once and for all then. We started seeing a Christian Counselor who was a GODSEND and a wonderful man. He helped us both start to repair things in our lives and marriage that were still broken from the affair. My husband started coming back to church again. I could see things finally starting to improve.

Then, after years of trying and beginning to think it would not be possible for us, we got pregnant again in October of 2009. This pregnancy was truly blessed as there were no complications throughout the entire thing. As my third trimester began, however, he began to experience extreme panic attacks and mood swings. I spent most of those last three months taking off of work and trying to help him with whatever was going on.

Our son was born in July of 2010. After sleeping through most of my labor, my husband stayed long enough to snuggle our son and sit with us through the first night before going home to "get a handle on things". I spent all three days in the hospital with post-partum anxiety, a spinal headache (that wasn't discovered until I was sent home), and a newborn by myself except for the loving support of my family when they visited. I didn't understand.

Understanding came later when my husband was diagnosed as bipolar. We thought that through medication, he could finally begin to get a grip on his illness and behavior. Instead, he began to turn himself into a victim. He began taking pain killers for recurring headaches and then began to abuse those pain killers. After many fights and another couple of trips to our counselor, he stopped using the pills, although he would frequently ask to get more and fight/rant/rage when I stuck to my guns.

He lost his job in February due to his medication abuse, although he would never admit that was the reason. Instead of seeking a new job, he would sit in his "cave" and play video games, claiming he was in too much pain or swinging too much to get out. Our finances began to falter and then failed. We've had to recently start the process of filing for bankruptcy.

The last straw came when he took 57 mg of the 90 Xanax he was supposed to take in a month... in 6 hours. He was nearly incoherent, stumbling around. And when I confronted him with it, he said I didn't understand what kind of pain he was in. He told me to turn around so he could "temporarily harm" me to show me what it was like. I told him no and to go to bed.

The next day he tried to coerce me into letting him have money that we honestly didn't have for a "friend" in need. This turned out to actually be him trying to go out and get more pain medications by shopping around with 3 doctors. Hours later, he called trying to convince me to let him start having a night cap before bed "to help him relax". When I said that was out of the question for a recovering alcoholic, he "accidentally" broke his hand when he hit the brick wall outside. He went to the ER and, imagine this, they gave him pain killers.

We had a final counseling appointment, and I cried my heart out telling him and the counselor that I couldn't do this anymore and I couldn't keep our son around this. My husband seemed to grasp the seriousness of the situation and vowed to start changing and following the counselor's plan for recovery. He was going to come to our special service on Sept. 11 at church.

That Sunday, I woke up to him stumbling and falling around. When he laid down on the couch, I couldn't get him to wake back up again. I check the pill bottles, and he had taken 25 of the 33 remaining Xanax. I packed up enough for the night for myself and our son and went to church.

We've been staying with my parents at the parsonage ever since. He's begged, pleaded, cried and done every manipulation under the book to try and get me to "come back so we can work this out as a family". My response to him is that he has to change first, and then we can go from there.

He's living with his mother now back in the college town we met at. I'm living with my parents with our son. I know in my heart that I've done all I can do. I have prayed, pleaded, loved and tried so hard to save this marriage and to love him despite everything. I have been verbally and emotionally abused, ignored, abandoned and cheated on. In spite of all of this, I know that God can save this if he will let Him change him. But he has to make the choice to stop being a victim and start taking responsibility for his choices and his life.

My family, both physical and spiritual, have been so supportive of me. It's been two and a half weeks now since I left. I've seen him once since then when he came to visit me and our son. He claims to be working through the materials given to him by the counselor, but refuses to check into any program to help him with his addictions. He also claims that he hasn't abused anything since I left.

If you're still here at this point... first of all: wow. Good job. ;) Second of all, I apologize for the length of this.

I'm just at the point now where I've drawn the boundary lines of what I can accept as a wife and mother. I will not let his destructive behaviors destroy me and our son too. But he's told so many lies to me over the years, I don't know how to discern if he's really changing or not. I have no doubt that he's trying, but he's tried many times before. It always fades away after a week... maybe a month.

We have another appointment with our counselor in November. I told him we would reassess things then. I'm struggling now because I'm caught in this inbetween place of not wanting to harden my heart to the future, and yet having to harden my heart to the present. There are people who would condemn me for leaving him... although I just don't see how. :(

I'm just praying for clarity and for the truth to be seen. That God would guide me step by step and not let me be deceived. I would appreciate your prayers and any thoughts you might have. Again, I'm sorry this was so very long!

wow!! I can say that backwards!! wow! First I am male, second I have never married,so please keep this in mind,as a humble 56 year old believer writes you in love from Jesus in me. Here in a nutshell is what appears you have already done. Matt 18:15-17 I do not know whether the Church has done this, but it looks like you could not wait for them, and I sure cannot blame you!!

It is easy for anyone to write words down, what is not easy, is to put oneself in anothers shoes. Before one can have something, they must believe they are entitled to it.In your case, his true turning around, not just for you,but for your child as well! This to me is what a man is to DO!! When he says he loves a woman, and marries her! Eph 5:25-30

You see the problem he has.The problem is not you!! This is NOT your fault!! So do not let the enemy tell you it is!! because the devil and his nature is to steal from us!!( john 10:10) if that was not bad enough he is also the very father of ALL lies!! ( john 8:44) His problem is himself,it always has been,I myself have never understood, why a man, who has steak at home, would ever settle for little crust of bread? I have no clue?
But such are the facts before us,and they are not in dispute.

So now what about you?? This is now my concern! You have said you have been getting wonderful support! I am so glad for you on this!! You sure do need it! And eared it, sister in Christ, you deserve it! But now during this time of testing for you personal, which this truly is,what are you doing to help your relationship with our Jesus? Are you staying in prayer?

Are you reading the Word daily? Or has this drawn you away from our Lord? Because The Lord, nor you are at fault, here, but the enemy would sure make you think it is both the Lord's fault and yours! That my sister in Christ is his very nature, and like Jesus the devil does not change either! ( james 1:22 says be ye a doer of the Word and not a hearer only, decieving yourself, which is what your husband has done to himself.

This you are very keen, that you will not be deceived again!
Your trust, is no longer in words, but rather action, and not action, just to get you back either, but action, where he will be what a husband is suppose to be to a wife! He is to be a MAN!! And be the example, you have a child already, you do not need another older one as well!

Truth in love can be tough, this he is now seeing in you. BUT!! You knew this was coming did you not?? hehe YOU have a much greater need as well!! Matt 18:21-35!! How can another come back,if you have closed the door before him?
You want to see good works on his part, you cannot see this unless you spend some times with him,or have your door opened to see them. I would set some time, each week or day depending on how you are within yourself. To see,let him prove to you the love he says he has, like before you were married.

Tell him that when his boat is stable again, you can think of coming back aboard it! ( eph 4:14-16) Speaking the truth, is also acting in that truth. In this way,you can see how much, or how little he loves both you and himself! That is why Jesus tells us to be shrewd!!( matt 10:16!) This is not to put hoops in front of him to jump over!! This is for you to become secure in him,as you were when you first married him. My prayers are of course with you! I hope I have given you some hope!! This kind of hope!! ( rom 15:13) assurance kind of hope.

But even as faith without works is most dead( james 2:26) so are words that have no action! They are one and same! Blessing to you,I hope I did not write to long as well!! But in the Lord I knew how important this is to you,and wanted to give you every encouragment from the Lord in me!!
blessing to you!

Well, i support your decision to leave. It's of my opinion that you've done everything correctly. You've stuck with the marriage through lots of bad situations, tried to improve things, fix things. You gave it plenty of time. But there has to be a line, and you seem to have a good awareness of where that line should be and what you should do. The boundaries you set are perfectly reasonable and you're doing a great job sticking to them. I encourage you to continue on the path that you're on and to stick to your guns. I know it can be easy to give in on these situations, but stay strong, keep the boundaries up.

All relationships are rooted in mutual trust. When the trust is broken by lies and unfaithfulness, it has to be repaired before the relationship can progress. Some people have to hit rock bottom before they will permanently change. Perhaps the both of you can stay in communication while separated\, to assess whether permanent change has occured. If he wants to pray together with you, it may be helpful. Pray for God's peace and conviction about the steps to take in your life. Time is a great healer.
Perhaps regular communication may be helpful as well. Agree to express views without getting mad, showing mutual respect. If people cannot agree to express views without getting up set, or getting into personal insults, the communication may not be helpful. You can agree to continue commnication at a later time if tempers flare.
Meanwhile, you need to work out details about financial responsibilities. Also in many states, either party can file for divorce based on one year of separation. Absence extinguishes small passions and inflames strong passions. During the separation, partners may realize how much they really love each other and are willing to do what is necessary/
Find a couple of older men you trust, hopeifully church elders, and let them interview your husband, and listen to their counsel.

You definately need to be under a pastors guidance in this situation.

Hey everyone.

I'm definitely seeking counsel from several strong Christians who I know will give me honest, Godly guidance. My pastor is my father, actually... so he's doing his best, but it's difficult for him to be completely objective. I'm also in contact with the Christian counselor we've seen for the past couple of years. He gave me several resources to work through also.

I've found out some more things in the past two days that make me think this isn't going to work out. He's been asking friends their opinions on whether or not he should "get laid", and he went out drinking last night even though he's been dry for two years. There are also some suspicious numbers showing up on our cell phone bill.

I continue to pray that God will just reveal the truth. I've done all I can do now. In the end, I've made firm decisions now on the boundaries of what behavior I and our son will be around. He has to choose from here. My fear is that he already has, he's just trying to not look like the "bad guy".

Thank you for your prayers. Please keep lifting us up.

You have been given good advice here on CC. I will lift you and your whole family up in prayer. God Bless you with wisdom and His strength...Amen

Oh how I feel for you Chiclet01 you are not alone in this tribulation and I will most definiteley pray for you.

Casinos are the most evil places in all the country I have personally witnessed the destruction of many families due directly to either being entertained there or working there. They are full of lost souls and it's so easy to see just walking the floor, prostitution and gambling go hand in hand so it's not hard to see how your husband was led astray when the evils of this world are in your face every day tempting you at every turn. I shall pray for him as well.

Video games..... I know this may sound crazy but hear me out. Those things are also very evil in nature. To quote scripture Thou shall have no other Gods before me. I myself have seen the damage caused by these insidious creations and actually played them myself but no longer.
I have watched how they have made subtle changes in my own children and I am having a very difficult time trying to wean them off of them because like you my other half doesn't see the problem that they cause. This is the most difficult challenge I have had regarding my children and when I threatened to destroy them because I can see their evil nature it caused an even wider gap between my wife and myself.(she thinks I'm being unreasonable) My suggestion is never let your child play with them period the subtle changes are almost inpercievable at first but in time it becomes very noticeable.
Alcohol and drug abuse...I could write volumes on this topic as I myself am recovering from both and let me tell you it is not easy. You are absolutely right in this regard and STICK TO YOUR GUNS on this one your son will thank you in the end. There are more horror stories about this topic than you could shake a stick at I have witnessed 1000's myself from the time I was 4 on up and it always ends the same way. dependency=weakness=death
to quote scripture again "the wages of sin is death"

I have been married for 11 years though my wife and I have lived together for 21. I have 3 teenagers 14, 17, and 18 2 boys 1 girl just so you don't think I am talking out of my hat.
I recently have come back to God after 30+ years and are struggling just like you so you see we have something in common.
Daily prayer is probably the best advice I can give you and I will pray for you and your family as well. Maybe in so doing I might learn a little more about myself and what Gods plans are for me and others praying for you is never a bad thing.

Keep your stick on the ice were all in this together:)
May God bless you always

Chic,
I am so sorry tha tyou are going through all of this. If he is talking about having affairs with other women, I think you need to get your financial affairs in order like child support.
praying for you
Fred

Hi

Thanks for the sincere sharing. It wasn't lengthy or anything. In fact, I can tell it comes from your heart.

Your husband as an individual before he is married, probably has critical personal issues that are not resolved or dealt with. And he has been manifesting them IN THE MARRIAGE and it has affected you (wife) as well. In fact, as a single person, it is easy to play down these issues (concealing them) but once he is married, anything that is not right with God will surface eventually.

Deal with his personal relationship with God. When you meet him, focus on this - His Salvation with Jesus Christ. If he is not strong here, then help me to be one. It is not about going to Church here. It is seeing life through what God wants - his personal life, his job, his marriage, his family. Without a strong relationship with Jesus, it is very difficult to solve his problems. But with God, ALL THESE ARE POSSIBLE because we can trust and rely on his SUPERNATURAL POWER to root out all evils inside us.

All of us can read all we want, meet the best counsellors in town or hear the most powerful word around. But at the end of the day, there is a choice to be made. And it is nothing new - DO YOU WANT TO DEDICATE YOUR LIFE TO GOD?

The good news is that when we chose to dedicate our life to God, God's power can descend upon our lives and we can be miraculously set free.

Pray that God will convict him of his ways and ask Him to give your husband strength and grace to come back to Him.

Be strong!
Bobby

Dear Chiclet01,

Now you are in a place of stability, I would say take a break. It's been a long, stressful journey and you need to rest.
(You may even grieve over what's happened, which is normal, and something which needs to happen.)

Please don't feel you have to hold on to your love and hopes for your relationship in your own strength. It's up to him now, and God. If he comes through, let him win your love again. (For that you may wish to pray.)

I pray God gives you peace and rest.

With love, Steve

Thank you, everyone, for your prayers.

Unfortunately, after another incident this weekend where he got drunk and was hung over for his visit to see me and our son, I have decided that he is not changing. At least not now. We are going to file a no-fault divorce once we agree upon the terms.

Please keep lifting all of us up. Pray that he will someday let God work His holy change into his life. Pray that I will have strength to walk through this and the peace and joy that only He can give. Pray that our son will grow up to be a Godly man and that the sins of the father will not plague him.

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement. I continue to need them.

Thank you for the update...Sorry to hear things have not changed. I will be praying for you and your family.

Hi, chiclet, sorry to hear what you're going through :(. His adultery gives you biblical grounds for divorce, but his sudden mood swings and violence after cheating on you make me think that he may be under demonic oppression, which was instigated by the infidelity (NOTE: I do NOT believe that all bi-polar people are posessed, but I do think that posession is often treated by the medical community as bi-polar disorder). Do you think that he would be open to deliverance by a spirit-filled minister? Praying that Jesus will lead you to the right answer- In Him, Nicole

Chic,
thanks for the updates. I agree with the above posts.. The key is, is he willing to do what he needs to do.
Likewise

Thank you for your support, everyone.

It looks like this will be a thankfully smooth process. He's agreed to everything I suggested, probably because he's relieved I'm not asking for anything from him but minimal child support. I'm going to have complete legal and physical custody of our son, and visitation will be worked out between us on an "as needed" basis.

Despite everything, I still pray that he lets God change him eventually. I hope that he comes into all God wants for him, even if it isn't with me. For his own sake and for the sake of our son.

Please pray for me as I walk through this. My heart isn't bitter, and I'm doing all I can to stay connected to God, my family, and my church family. I want to be able to walk through this fire and be stronger on the other side instead of charred and broken. I know that God will work this for good, no matter how bad it may seem now. Just gotta keep walking.

I'm praying for you, chiclet01. May God bless you and your family.

May God bless you with his wisdom, peace and love...In Jesus Name Amen

Chiclet, you said you would reassess in November. You've changed what you were going to do; is that so necessary, when you HAVE stability and a safe place? I know his behaviour causes more and more anguish and you only want it to end, but his behaviour hasn't got worse, it's only not better.

When you realise some people don't change until they're at bottom, rock, to me you're pulling up stumps before God even has a chance to move.

It's certainly not worth any more emotional energy, and you want it to end. But you ARE safe and you ARE stable.
Can't you stop and get comfort and love from your parents and friends: Otherwise it will sweep along 'til after the divorce and you'll still be looking for peace in that situation.
Wishing you the best.

With love, from Steve.

I'm sorry, I just saw this.

I do understand what you're saying, Steve4U... but this has been a four year process (since the first affair). God has had many chances to move and has, but he ran from it every time. His behavior has grown consistently worse over the years, and has gotten much worse over the last months. He has always done just enough to change the surface, but has never allowed any true changes to happen deeper. He wants his instant fix... and that's just not going to happen.

I have a peace about the situation that makes no sense, and I truly feel it's from God. I had fallen into a cycle of trying to control his behavior at the expense of everything about me. My life is far from over, and God has much more in store for me. I am a mother of an adorable little boy. I have a job that is also a mission field. I mentor several teenage girls on a daily basis. Even through this valley, I know God is giving me all that I need.

He signed the divorce agreement just over a week ago. It will be final in December without us even having to go to court. My heart hurts now and then, but not nearly as much as it did when I was living in that situation.

Thank you for your prayers.

Well, if you have that peace deeper beyond understanding...

...

It is a sure umpire in your heart.

...

The very best wishes to you...

...

And, I ask, Almighty God, for redemption and salvation for the man here, through Christ Jesus.

I pray Lord that you come to him and reach down your arm to lift him to yourself, please Lord.
