What do you think sin is?

We are not sin. We are not the cause of sin. Sin dwells in us. We are sinners, yes, but I am not asking about sins, the action of sin or the affect, but the thing, the object. What is sin.

There is a nature. Christ had two natures, the flesh & Spirit.

He knew no sin, but was made to be sin, for us and for our sins.
 
Sin, to me, is not an object but a state. It is imperfection and susceptibility to more imperfection. There are, of course, plenty of particular sins out there.

This is why we can say that babies are "born in sin" or "with a sinful nature" or "have original sin." If you understand "sin" to mean personal violation of God's laws, that's offensive.

But they are born imperfect, if only because they will eventually die, a fate bequeathed by their parents. Perfectly ethically pure babies, who could no more sin than think, can nevertheless die soon after birth because they have broken natures.

It is why, I think, John says that Jesus takes away the sin of the world. Sin, singular! God deals not only with the sins we do, but with our very imperfection. All those babies who don't have sins, they still are broken in some way, and God takes that away.
 
Eph 4:22
 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Eph 4:24
 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
 
Very nice thought put forward in your post, Sebastian. I just think about how sin came into the world, it was already present in creation and I find it very important that dominion was lost to the first creature to cause sin to manifest.
 
I define sin as wrong doing in the eyes of God. This includes wrong thinking, fantasizing, lusting, etc. That is why if you hate your brother it is the same as murder. If you lust after a woman (or man) in your heart it is the same as adultery. God knows our hearts. I try daily to do as God would have me do, pray for the Holy Spirit to lead me each day and make right decisions but I still fall into day dreaming about what I want, what I would do if my situation was different. I struggle with why I'm in the situation I am, if there is a reason and what God's purpose is. I know this is the same as saying to God "I'm not satisfied. Give me more." So sin is more than actions, it is what's inside of us. And the best we can do is not to act on it, not to let it out, not to hurt others because of it, and to turn to God before it gets too hard to handle ourselves.

To stray away from what God desire His creations to be, that is what sin is.


 
The nature of sin, is opposition, I get that. The nature of sin is to steal, kill & destroy. The very nature of sin is self destruction, I see this. Sin has been dealt with on the cross, that is the very testimony of God by the resurrection of Christ. We, wait sorry, I will have to come back later, cooking cabbage rolls, my husband is due home today and I should focus on a couple things here, before enjoying anymore time sharing in conversation about God and my interests! :))) but, I can't help it, plus this weather is always playing with the signal of my phone, kind of frustrating.

For one, it's a word that has been stretched to automatically mean something harsh, when it refers to a full range of intensity.

It means "mistake" and shouldn't be used to automatically insinuate rebellious transgression, though it certainly includes that.

Most people hear the word "sin" as an accusatory word. "Missing the mark" or "mistake" is less accusatory and more in line with the meaning.
