Yep switching hosts is a massive undertaking. It’s like trying to move from a house where you lived for 10, 20 or 30 years. I’m sure you all know the technical details and steps involved which can include everything from hiring movers, to making calls to schedule change of address and service for all utilities, tv, internet and a 100 other things.

But it's very doable even if you don't understand technology very well, in regards to moving hosts.
If you guys want me to bore you with technical details, i can but i'd rather not so that's why i'm asking if you want me to bother you with more technical details.

Think of A server, which is a computer , as a landlord trying to make money by renting apartments.

A responsible landlord rents just an apartment with 3 rooms inside.
But a greedy landlord can rent out 3 rooms inside 1 apartment.

When you do this, you put an overload on the plumbing and electrical system when each tenant loads up their room with refrigerators, vacuums, space heaters other electronics and they all use the showers at the same time.
The electrical breakers will trip or the main water pipe will get blocked.

That’s what’s happening in the web, when a host (a person who sells space to others to host a site like this one ) overloads their servers by selling space to 100 customers on a server , instead of 10.

Tech talk makes my brain feel o_O
but @Eli1 you explain this so well that I actually think I understand and could somewhat explain it to someone else (just a wee tiny bit).

That is somewhat accurate, but the real issue is not the 4000 users here, which most of them are search engines of some kind.
The issue wouldn't even be 10,000 users at the same time.

The real issue is that this site is sharing space with other websites who could have 4000-10,000 users each visiting them.
And on peak hours which is usually afternoon and evening/late evening EST, then the server crashes from overload.
that is the error message it gives.
mines been doing this too. usually only for a few hours.

Not much we can do my friend.
This is up to the site owner now.

Gotta understand that this is a low budget site with high expenses..

Christian forums like this are usually a "one man" operation. Meaning that Tracy (admin) does all the maintenance work as well as a million and one other things required to keep the site up and running. None if these individually require a lot of time but collectively it's hours every week.
And....he likely has a job elsewhere that actually pays his bills. The work he does here is gratis. The funding is provided by the donations which keeps the site running ad free.....but it's usually a close thing. (Shoestring budget for upgrades, bandwidth, and hosting)

And at times, dealing with the whiney people here can be emotionally draining. But Tracy keeps on doing the jobs of maintaining the databases and handling exception reports. Patches come in needing to be installed (if the platform keeps updating) Meanwhile because of his lack of interaction....probably doesn't truly enjoy all the many conspiracy theories surrounding him. Might make a smirk on his face from time to time.

I, for one, appreciate his time, attention and dedication to creating and sustaining this site. Yeah, so it goes down occasionally.....but midnight on Sunday nights, when traffic is the lowest, is not always the best time for him personally to do maintenance. (He has a life)

I'm sure that when the site goes down he gets an email (auto triggered). But that doesn't mean that he necessarily has time to do anything about it. (Bill paying jobs tend to fire you if you don't perform on requested timelines)

Just saying....

Good points and true enough. Having said that, if he doesn't improve the user/member experience, folk won't stick around and they will find an alternative site where they don't suffer these outages. I'm happy to donate and support the site financially, but it comes with an expectation that the site will be consistently available. That isn't happening.

As a business owner, it's Rob's responsibility to invest time and resources when and where needed to create a place that folks enjoy and want to frequent. When the site goes down, as it does often-- it puts a bad taste in the mouth and members are less likely to contribute towards a cause that they see no improvements in. Like an inner City-- people just stop going there, when things get ugly.

But as the saying goes-- build it and they will come.
