The reason Paul preached in the synagogue has nothing to do with the law. The people were gathered in the place. And that's it.

Read Acts 15 and tell me where gentile believers are required to observe the sabbath.
Now in regard to reasoning in the synogue on the sabbath, starting in Acts 13:42-44 we see that Paul's work here was evangelism. Notice that these were "unbelievers" in Christ before Paul preached to them. Yes, they believed in the Jewish system, but the Bible says in Acts 14:1, that they BECAME believers proving Paul's work there was evangelism and not sabbath worship.

The Greeks were Jewish converts to Judaism known as proselytes. They practiced the law of Moses and kept the sabbath. The only Greeks that were in the synagogue would be these proselytes. These Greeks were not yet Christians. Acts 13:43 - "Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God."

Acts 14:1 - "In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks."

Acts 17:4 - "And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of the God-fearing Greeks and a number of the leading women.

Acts 18:4 - "And he was reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks."

The word Christian comes from Scripture:

What is the meaning of the term Christian?

The followers of Jesus Christ were first referred to as “Christians” by the Gentiles of Syrian Antioch, and the name was more than likely meant as an insult (see Acts 11:26).

In the New Testament, believers never refer to themselves as “Christians”; rather, they use such terms as brethren (Acts 15:1; 1 Corinthians 16:20, NAS), disciples (Acts 11:26; 14:24, NKJV), and saints (Acts 9:13; 2 Corinthians 13:13, ESV).

Before his conversion, Saul of Tarsus sought out those “who belonged to the Way” (Acts 9:2),

Its in our Bibles, so its not a made up term. Regardless even in the Scriptures we are told to be followers of Christ 1John2:6 1Peter2:21-22 Heb4:15 He has always been mans example to follow- why we are made in the image of God to be like Him. Who better to follow in their footsteps than the God who made us?

The reason Paul preached in the synagogue has nothing to do with the law. The people were gathered in the place. And that's it.

Read Acts 15 and tell me where gentile believers are required to observe the sabbath.
In the council for Gentiles they were already keeping the Sabbath

Acts 15:21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”

The apostles taught what matters is keeping the commandments of God. The Sabbath is a commandment of God regardless if one chooses to accept this fact or not, God placed it in the same unit to only worship Him and not steal from our neighbor. Written personally by God, spoken by God. Exo31:18The apostles never rebelled against God. Jesus told them to observe everything He commanded them- they observed every Sabbath.

Both the Jews and Gentiles came together to keep the Sabbath, just as Jesus predicted - His house will be a house for ALL nations, those who keep the Sabbath Isa 56:6-7 and we see the prediction play out perfectly being kept decades and decades every Sabbath after the Cross- and it continues forevermore thus saith the LORD Isa66:22-23

Acts 13:42So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. (Instead of the next day)

Acts 13:44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God.

Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.

Sadly the other spirit tries to counterfeits everything God does- keeping Sunday instead of Sabbath did not come from Scripture, it came from the Catholic church who said they made this change outside of Scripture. It's a mark of their authority over God's and they are above the Bible. It happened so long ago, people do not even realize they are obeying the Catholic church over the God of the Bible. God warned us this would happen Dan7:25 why its more than just a day- it has to do with out loyalty to God. The end of time battle is over worship- why we are being called back to worship our Creator Rev14:7 Exo20:11

Question: Which is the Sabbath day?
Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day.

Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
Answer: We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.
—Rev. Peter Geiermann C.SS.R., The Convert’s Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, p. 50
Q. Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept?

A. Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her; —she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority.
—Rev. Stephen Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism; New York in 1857, page 174
Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act. And the act is a mark of her ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters.
—C. F. Thomas, Chancellor of Cardinal Gibbons, in answer to a letter regarding the change of the Sabbath, November 11, 1895.
The Sabbath was Saturday, not Sunday. The Church altered the observance of the Sabbath to the observance of Sunday. Protestants must be rather puzzled by the keeping of Sunday when God distinctly said, 'Keep holy the Sabbath Day.' The word Sunday does not come anywhere in the Bible, so, without knowing it they are obeying the authority of the Catholic Church.
—Canon Cafferata, The Catechism Explained, p. 89.
The Pope is of so great authority and power that he can modify, explain, or interpret even divine law". The pope can modify divine law, since his power is not of man, but of God, and he acts a vicegerent of God upon earth
—Lucius Ferraris, Prompta Bibliotheca, art. Papa, II, Vol. VI, p. 29.
Deny the authority of the Church and you have no adequate or reasonable explanation or justification for the substitution of Sunday for Saturday in the Third - Protestant Fourth - Commandment of God... The Church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.'
—Catholic Record, September 1, 1923.

Although the term ‘Christian’ was first used by outsiders in Antioch, the New Testament later accepts the name positively (1 Peter 4:16), showing that the early church embraced it rather than rejecting it as merely a man-made insult.

Regardless- who should be our example to follow? We are told to follow in the example of Jesus- that's really the larger picture here.

OK, so when was the last time you walked on water? How about the time you raised someone from the dead? Did you go to the cross and die for mankind? Have you sold everything you have to follow Jesus?

That's being silly, we are not God, it doesn't mean we do not have to follow what Jesus who is God asked us to.

Luke 6:46 But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

1John2:3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

This always surprises me why so many try to finds ways around what Jesus who is God made flesh asks of us, if we love Him.

I am ok agreeing to disagree- it will get sorted out in God's time.

Wrong again. The word does not appear in the Bible except to state that believers were called Christians by the people of Antioch. It was mockery.
  • Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
  • Acts 26:28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.”
  • 1 Pet 4:16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.

Considering the photo in this persons profile (Gideon) - I am going to assume they are not meaning it in a derogatory way they are interpreting it from the Scriptures.

He said, "The word does not appear in the Bible except to state that believers were called Christians by the people of Antioch." It is very easy in this electronic age to verify that the word ("Christian") appears in three verses in the NT, not just one as he stated. And, though I didn't respond to his claim that it was a derogatory term, there is no evidence in Scripture to support tht claim as far as I can see.

Considering Jesus was preaching the word of God on the Sabbath day that should be our first clue something is off, since a Christian means a follower of Christ. The commandment is to keep the Sabbath day holy, the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. Exo20:8-11 the Sabbath is a holy convocation Lev23:3

Luke 4:16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

The apostles were followers of Christ- we are called to be followers of Christ and join ourselves to the LORD Isa 56:6-7

Acts 13:44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God.

Acts 17:
2Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying,This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.”

Acts 15:21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.

Just curious about your statement. So are you stating it was wrong for Jesus to preach on the Sabbath? And when He was rebuked for healing the man’s withered hand on the sabbath and was confronted didn’t He say that He (the son of man) was also Lord over the Sabbath? And are you opposed to Sunday church, or Saturday church since technically Shabbat is from Friday 6pm to Saturday 6pm? I’d just like to know your thoughts on these questions. Thanks

Of course it was not wrong for Jesus to preach the word of God on the Sabbath, that was His custom because the commandment says to keep the Sabbath day holy, the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD Exo20:8-11 Jesus is God made flesh, He came to do the will of the Father in heaven John6:38

He was rebuked for healing on the Sabbath by the Jews and Pharisees because according to them He broke *their* sabbath and not the Sabbath in the Ten Commandments. Exo20:8-11 They added many rules to the Sabbath such as not eating or helping people in need which was never against the Sabbath commandment. Jesus spent a lot of His time correcting them on how to correctly keep the Sabbath, it was always meant to be a delight Isa 58:13-14- sure God gave guidelines on how to keep the Sabbath there are a handful of them, but the Jews made hundreds and hundreds of rules adding to God's comamndment and we are told plainly not to add or take from it Deut4:3 Ecc3:14. They were written by God Himself, not one can improve on Gods perfect Psa19:7 and holy law Rom7:12

I think we should worship God 365/24/7 including on Sunday. Sunday is not a term in the Bible- God only named one day, the Sabbath and He called it the Sabbath of the LORD Exo20:10 the holy day of the LORD Isa 58:13 so according to God's own words, this is the day He said to keep holy. While worshipping on Sunday is not bad I believe it can be bad when we are exalting a day God said is for works and labors Exo20:9 over the only day God said to keep holy Exo20:8-11 the only day that came with the power of God blessing the day Exo20:11 and sanctifying the day Gen2:3 and blessing us when we faithfully keep Isa56:2 and sanctifying us Eze20:12 because we can't do this ourselves. Isa66:17

Sunday keeping is not a comamndment of God. There are two instances in all of Scripture where the apostle's came together on the first day in 30+ years. Once on a Saturday night after sunset (day1) to have a meal as Paul was going on a long mission trip during the day part of the first day. There is nothing in the passage they did this weekly or it changed the sanctity from Sabbath to the first day. There was also a 1 time collection on the first day that was done at home to help the needy, nothing about a church service or changing one of God's commandments- only God can do that. Sunday-keeping over Sabbath keeping never came from Scripture, the apostles kept every Sabbath Acts 18:4 Acts 13:44 it was kept in every city for many many generations Acts 15:21 because it was according to Christ- His own written and spoken will and Testimony Exo31:18 Psa40:8. we were warned the Sabbath would be changed in Scripture, not by God Dan7:25 and we see this plainly happening in history of the change and the church who claims this change is a commandment of their church and if one is keeping they are obeying their commandments (of men) over God's commandment, their authority over God's. Sunday is a tradition of man, not a commandment of God.

Jesus addressed this as plainly as He could what this does- when we keep our traditions over the commandments of God and He quoted directly from the Ten Commandments He said it makes the word of God of no effect, it makes ones heart far from Him, because God placed His laws in our hearts Heb8:10 and minds, not mans traditions and our worship to Him becomes in vain. So according to Jesus is we are replacing a commandment of God with mans traditions that is something I beleive God is opposed to because it shows we are serving another authority over His Isa56:6. Scripture teaches whoever we obey is who we serve Rom6:16 so in my view its less about a day and more about our loyalty. Like Adam and Eve- was it really a test over a tree or over loyalty.

The end time is about worship- which comes down to who we serve. I already see people trying to make in law keeping Sunday and when government gets involved in enforcing laws it means enforcing consequence's. So just like what the Pharisees did in their time they enforced their own man-made sabbath and held that as the standard over the commandment of God. I see history clearly repeating itself. The only safeguard we have is joining ourselves to the LORD and serving Him Isa56:6 the way He asks, not the way we want to.

Sorry this went longer than I meant to. Hope this answers your questions. :)

Acts 18:4 - "And he was reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks."

The Gentiles were keeping the Sabbath, this was in addition to the proselytes and Jews, just as God promised His house or prayer would be for all nations- that's everyone, why He said everyone, those who keep the Sabbath. Isa56:6-7

Acts 13: 42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us:

‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord.

Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.

As you shared, it was the Jews custom to have church on the sabbath day, the day of rest. Thank you for citing the many examples.

A question we should ask ourselves is, did the apostles violate the Lord's will by preaching and teaching and meeting on days other than that sabbath rest day?

Acts 2:46And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Of course not, but they never did that in lieu of obeying the 4th commandment. What it means the Lord added to the church daily, is people were coming to the LORD on a daily basis, we should preach Jesus daily and help bring people to God daily. But it was never that or keeping one of God's commandments. The people of God keep God's commandments Rev14:12.

In regard to Isaiah 56:1-6, foreigners were to "join themselves to the Lord;" and "love the name of the Lord;" and "be his servants;" and "take hold of God's covenant." The OLD COVENANT. But to do this they had to be circumcised, for God said: “No foreigner uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, of all the foreigners who are among the sons of Israel, shall enter My sanctuary." (Ezekiel 44:9) When Gentiles thus "joined themselves to the Lord" they ceased being Gentiles and became proselytes to the Jewish religion. They kept the Sabbath AS JEWISH PROSELYTES, NOT as Gentiles.

But where are Gentiles as Gentiles ever commanded to keep the Sabbath? Furthermore, if the Sabbath was of universal application, why were the Gentiles called "strangers?" The apostle Paul, speaking of the Gentiles during the Jewish age, says they were "strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world?" (Ephesians 2:12)

And when God gave the Sabbath commandment at Sinai, why did he make it binding ONLY on "the stranger that is within your gates?" (Exodus 20:10) Where is the passage that proves the Sabbath was binding on the Gentile OUTSIDE the gates? All this shows the Sabbath was NOT universally applied. If it had been, there would have been no "strangers from the covenants of promise."

Exodus 20:2 - I am the Lord your God, who brought YOU out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. The Israelites.

Moses gives the reason the Sabbath was given to the nation of Israel: “Remember that YOU were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought YOU out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore, the Lord your God has commanded YOU to observe the Sabbath day.” (Deuteronomy 5:15)

Exodus 35:1 - Then Moses assembled all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and said to them, “These are the things that the LORD has commanded YOU to do: 2. For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy day, a Sabbath of complete rest to the LORD; whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. 3. You shall not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.” The congregation of THE SONS OF ISRAEL, God said to them.

Sabbath observance was a sign between God and Israel: “The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested.” (Exodus 31:16-17)

As for Acts 13:43-47 and Acts 18:4, I already thoroughly covered that in post #341.

Lets look at Isa 56 more carefully, Jesus is clearly speaking of future

Isa 56:1 Thus says the Lord:

“Keep justice, and do righteousness,
For My salvation is about to (future) come,
And My righteousness to be(future) revealed.

The LORD is saying keeping the Sabbath is doing justice and righteousness, which is the foundation of His throne Psa89:14

2 Blessed is the man who does this,
And the son of man who lays hold on it;
Who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

I know many want to label the 4th commandment as for Jews, but this goes against God's own teaching.

God is trying to bless man, not just Jew. Once God blesses something, like He did with the Sabbath Exo20:11 man cannot take away 2Chron17:27, they can only forfeit their own blessings.

I would advise not to. That's what the other spirit wants for us, not God.

Psa 37:22 For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth,
But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.

Isa 56:6 “Also the sons of the foreigner
Gentiles

Who join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him,

These are Gentiles who join themselves to the Lord which is what God foretold Isaiah which later happened

Acts 11:21 – A great number believed and turned to the Lord
1 Corinthians 6:17 He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him
Ephesians 2:13–19 – Gentiles made near, no longer strangers

And to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants
We are either a servant of Christ or a servant of another spirit. Mat12:30 The apostles were all servants of Christ and servant of Christ means they follow Christ, hear His words, do them through love, faith and follow in His example. And the next verse plainly tells us what servants of Christ do that love Him and join themselves to Him

Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And holds fast My covenant—

They obey Him and keep His Sabbath and not defile it. God made the Sabbath day holy to spend holy and sanctified time with His people so we can join ourselves to Him. His people are in a covenant relationship with Him and have our Fathers laws written in their hearts and minds Exo34:28 Psa89:34 Heb8:10 2Cor3:3 Psa 40:8 Rom7:22 Those who reject this really do not fully understand what they are rejecting. These are words directly from Jesus- He said His Sabbath was made for mankind for everyone and even in the 4th commandment itself it always included Gentiles.

Exo 20:10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.

7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain,
Scripture interprets ‘holy mountain” spiritually in the New Covenant:

Isaiah 2:2–3 – In the latter days… all nations shall flow to it
Hebrews 12:22 – You have come to Mount Zion… the heavenly Jerusalem
John 4:21–24 – Worship no longer tied to a physical mountain
Thus Isaiah 56 points to New-Covenant worship, not temple geography alone.

And make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Jesus referred to this prophecy in His day of His temple or place of worship Mark 11:17 and restored worship for Jews and Gentiles on the Sabbath. Which we see in the life of the apostles and in the council for the Gentiles. Acts 15:21 Acts 13:42 Acts 13:44 Acts 18:4 etc.

Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
Will be accepted on My altar;
In the New Covenant sacrifices are spiritual. This prophecy cannot be before Christ because…

Jesus spoke of it in His time Mark11:17
Foreigners could not freely minister in the sanctuary Num 18:1–7; Ezek 44:7–9
Access to the altar was restricted by lineage
Gentiles were largely separated Eph 2:11–12 until the Cross Eph 2:13-14

So these are sacrifices that are accepted on Christs alter where He now ministers in His heavenly Temple Heb8:1-5 Rev 15:5 Rev11:19

Rom 12:1 Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
Hebrews 13:10. We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat
Rev 5:8 Golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
Revelation 8:3–4 prayers of the saints rise from the heavenly altar

For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

We this prophecy true both Jews and Gentiles coming together to hear the word of God on the Sabbath - Because one keeps the Sabbath does not make them a convert to Judaism, this is a false teaching. God made the Sabbath before Jew, before Israel, before Moses, when there was just man and God from the very beginning. Exo20:11

Acts 15:21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.

Acts 13:42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.”

Acts 13:44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God.

Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

And the true fulfillment of it

Isa 66:22“For as the new heavens and the new earth
Which I will make shall remain before Me,” says the Lord,
“So shall your descendants and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass
That from one New Moon to another,
And from one Sabbath to another,
All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the Lord.

The Sabbath is God’s holy day- God could not be more plain on this and who He made the Sabbath for- mankind and everyone, to spend sacred time with His creation so we can join ourselves to Him, love Him and worship our Creator who made everything. Exo20:11 Rev14:7

Isa 58:13 “If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath,
From doing your pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight,
The holy day of the Lord honorable,
And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways,
Nor finding your own pleasure,
Nor speaking your own words,
14 Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord;
And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth,
And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father.
The mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Don't let mans word stop us from listening to what God personally says - man wants all His blessings but on their terms not God's Isa56:6 they want to serve God on their terms not God's Isa56:6 God Himself tells us how to, but will we hear His voice and follow in His steps and allow Him to be our Shepard, or listen to another voice.

We want to be His servant and we are told whoever we obey is who we serve. Rom6:16 God could not have been more clear about His comamndment- He wrote them, He spoke them Exo31:18 He numbered them by design Deut4:13 and added Remember on the commandment He knew people would try to forget and do something else Dan7:25

I was impressed with Luke ch24 v 44- 53 Very interesting passage they witnessed Jesus just prior to and his taking up to heaven . Verse 53 And were continually in the temple , praising and Blessing God . Amen .

That's what I think too.
Some would have us to think that it is sinful, even call it Satan worship, (7thDayAventists), to gather on the Lord's day, first day of the week. The disciples are often meeting daily, praying daily, the Lord adding to the church at Jerusalem daily, Acts 2. We are at liberty to praise, bless God and learn His word any or every day as we choose.
