I have just started reading a new book about Royal women, called 'Divide and Rule'
It was published this year.

It features Queen Anne, Elizabeth I, Victoria, Elizabeth II of which I am up to.
After that the chapters are going to be on Diana, Camilla, Kate and Meghan

It's very interesting to read the history, or rather, all the stories that have come out about the royals spanning centuries. Like somehow, the Church of England got started by King Henry the eighth's desire for a son and heir (which he never got) . That instead of Lutherism, the Church of England leaned more toward Calvinism. That Catholics are protested against, and the French Catholics were sort of at loggerheads with the Hugeanots , just as the Irish Catholics butted heads with the English Protestants, who tried to take over their land.

It was very much divide and rule.

On a lighter note, who remembers this ditty?

Henry VIII actually did end up getting a son, King Edward VI, but he died pretty young so he is usually forgotten about.

Regarding Princess Diana's run in with the paps
I think in her case, is she'd just told them to 'naff off' when they were being rude like Princess Anne did, they might have listened.
Or protected herself with some dogs, maybe rottweilers, who could bite the photographers. The Queen had her ankle-biting corgis.

Even if she'd gotten herself a cute dog, like a bichon frise or poodle or something, then the paps might have decided they'd rather take the pics of the dogs rather than her, so they might have treated her better. IDK. It's sad that she couldn't go about her day without all these photographers following her around hoping to look up her skirt or whatever. It could break any woman, and make them paranoid, but unless she got restraining orders on all of them, it would be very hard to stop that kind of press interest in her, when everything she did or wore was devoured in the papers/magazines.

However not once did she try to sue any of the press. She courted them, they courted her.

It was Meghan's letter to her dad Thomas Markle that was leaked to the press.
Either she had made a copy of her letter and that was found and leaked
Or, her dad, showed the letter to someone else who leaked it to the press.

I very much doubt that the papers went around opening other people's mail or hacking emails. Was it one she handwrote, or was it an email? How long was this letter, and was she (Meghan) upset that it was published but abridged?

I don't know, but this was what the lawsuit was about and one of the allegations.
Her half-sister, wrote a memoir about her called 'Princess Pushy' (referring to her being in a wheelchair) and admitted that she was writing her memoir for the money (to pay for her disability costs) but also, that she had called the US press to stage photos of her dad looking at tuxes and royal history books as if he was going to make it to Harry and Meghan's nuptials. He didn't. He was in hospital as he had a heart attack. Harry's dad ended up giving Meghan away.

Meghan thought that the press had bribed her father into giving them copy.

Otherwise known as 'chequebook journalism'.

I don't quite understand -- since Meghan's nuptials were in done in public with cameras recording it with everyone to see, and her dad absent, would not the reporters covering the wedding be interested in her dad, of course they might have tried to contact them to see if he was coming or to ask what he thought about his daughter marrying a prince. He could have refused interviews and say no comment or just a short statement? Would that have been 'invading his privacy'?

When anyone has a journalist or reporter asking them questions or for information, is that an invasion of privacy? If the only thing he had was a letter or a wedding invite, is it wrong to publish that as proof that he and his daughter were in touch and that circumstances prevented him from attending? IDK. It seems like this happened years ago and someone is STILL sore about it.

It so happens that parents can't always attend the weddings of their offspring. That's just life. Why was it made a big deal. As Meghan's parents were divorced, maybe it would have been awkward to have them both at a wedding where they didn't know any of the guests. Not everyone has the luxury of a fully intact family. Sometimes, family is messy. Maybe you just have to own that - nobody is perfect.

Besides that, Harry and his wife are still married, so even if their wedding had been a disaster, it wouldn't have mattered, what does matter is what comes AFTER the wedding. And it seems their marriage has lasted a lot longer than her own parents (they separated when she was 2)

Harry in the newspaper again, this time in the Op Ed (next to the letters to the Editor page). The editor was opining that since Prince Harry can't get his act together re accomodations for his visit to the UK, that the entire monarchy is doomed because of these petty squabbles.

?!

I don't know, if he's there to see his family or dad, or on some other business, and just popping in, but, if none of his family have offered to put him up, then I don't think it should be any skin off his nose to find alternative accomodations i.e a hotel while visiting the UK. I'm sure there's plenty of friends that might welcome him, not everyone hates him! I don't think he's the type that requires too much or the red carpet rolled out for him.

Anyway, I don't think this is a prodigal son situation, in that he's run out of money and must go and be a servant in his dad's house. Surely his dad would welcome him even so? Nobody has to put on the fatted calf for him, I think it's perfectly understandable that he would want his independence.

Yes it breaks your heart when your children leave you, but it doesn't mean they don't love you. I think the palace courtiers/gossipers etc are making it a bigger deal than it is. 4 years away in another country is nothing. My sister was away for 20 years in the UK living her own life but she still returned to visit every couple of years (and it's expensive to fly to the other side of the world) and in the end gave it all up to help look after mum.

There's a paywall on this but you get the gist. I don't know why the editor mentioned Te Waikoropupu springs. I don't share her sentiment. Sometimes, family is messy! The monarchy has always been like this, has it ever been anything different?? The squabbles haven't really been anything to do with the Father/son relationship, in Harry's memoir Spare, it's more the relationship between the two brothers and the sibling rivalry that has been the issue.

Sometimes favouritism can come back and bite you in the butt.

Was on the 6'oclock news.
The latest is Meghan and their two children Archie and Lilibet will be visiting, but Meghan won't be appearing at any public events.
Harry isn't having any security detail, that he used to have as a royal. Or he has to pay his own? Not sure.

Seems like a bit of a diplomatic nightmare. Harry is going to Birmingham on Invictus business there's no word that he's going to see family while in the UK.

I think maybe not having an entourage could be better in some ways. Sure it makes you vulnerable, but us ordinary people live dangerously without them, and most of us are still alive.

People don't have to like Meghan, but they shouldn't spend time hating her either.
If Meghan and the children have made up their mind to go, they could do no worse than go on the ghost tour in Birmingham. That's fun. Also they might learn a little history as well.

Really I think it should be about what Archie and Lilibet want to do while in the UK. MiniBrum. Legoland. Cadbury world. The library.
Visiting rellies you don't really know is actually kind of boring for little kids. Speeches and photo ops and court cases aren't fun.

But what do I know. When you are 5 and 7, you don't have a lot of choice.

Thanks for Matariki message King Charles

It's nice to have a day off and look at the stars. Cold and chilly though. People are really getting into it this year, lots of events. This was not the case years ago. It wasn't even on our radar when I was growing up. But now all the schools have their children observing it, so it's more fun. This year I had hangi, and now I know how to make a flax star and fish.

It's nice to have a day off on your birthday too.
The next holidays aren't until Labour Day.

huh turns out I'm wrong..Diana did sue the press when they took photos of her exercising at the gym. Actually I remember that (and the photos). She got an injunction and won the case, got a settlement then donated the legal costs to charity.
Then there was the Panorama interview.

It does my head in. I thought her book 'Her true story' was her own idea but she had to have a little subterfuge to get that out and deny she played any part in it.

It does take a bit of guts to air your grievances in public, to say you are not happy with something. Unfortunately life will not always be like a curated instagram reel. I think everyone tries, but sometimes there are days when you really don't want to get out of bed. The price of fame.

I'd heard Queen Camilla was a reader and enjoyed David Walliams books but I had no idea she had a charity ...

!! But schools in New Zealand are getting rid of their librarians. We don't even get pay parity with the teacher aides. Some schools don't even have a library. And then they had to ban phones!

I think I'm going to subscribe. I've just finished reading Divide and Rule, Royal Women and Their Battles.
I think we all know it's really the women who rule the Monarchy.

I have read quite a number of books on the Queen's favourite books list. I wonder if she's on Goodreads? I see she's got her son's book on there. I liked the book that her brother wrote about riding an elephant. I thought that was smashing. Just go to India, buy an elephant and ride across the continent. I think it was called Travels with my Elephant.

I'm very sorry but I just couldn't get into Princess Anne's horse book. I'm a fan of Anne, but the Elephant book was a lot more interesting.

Ok we had horses, elephants, corgis, but I don't remember hearing about any royal goats.

Also, Princess Diana liked Lemon Drizzle Cake.

Just so you know! Also, she was good friends with Liza Minnelli, she said so in her memoir. When Liza was in London, she would pop in to see Princess Diana and have a chat and cup of tea. I think if Princess Diana hadn't been a Princess she would have loved to go on stage and be a dancer/ballerina. Well I don't really know what she would have done if she hadn't married at 19 and had children. Continued with her kindy teacher helper job? Practised Reiki? Study nursing?

Harry and family met up with his Dad and Camilla at his Highgrove house and garden, then it seems they went to visit Althorp, Diana's family home where she is buried.
Hope everything went well --- having lost a mum recently and have her birthday come round we celebrated by having a family yum cha, it seems Harry makes a lemon drizzle cake. It's important that we honor and remember those who've passed on.

We do have special holidays for his though if we can't do so on their birthdates. eg Anzac Day, Remembrance Day, All Souls day, Ching Ming, Matariki...Day of the Dead...

Anyway I hope there won't be anymore dramas and Harry and Meghan are getting on with their lives in the US.

Sorry in your previous post.... I forgot about Edward. I think everyone forgets about him, he's the youngest and spare to the spare.
He and Sophie and their children don't make so much news.

It seems many of the King Edwards weren't too fond of ruling or their lives were cut short.

Harry and Meghan broke from tradition when they chose names for their children. But I suppose they could choose anything they liked. Lilibet must be the cutest name, but I wonder if when she grows up she'll change it, though I think most people call her Lili for short.

It must be annoying that everyone knows so much about the royal family (for them) but actually we know very little apart from what they choose to tell us, or what the reporters want us to know. For our own families, a lot of what we know about our past and relationships aren't always shared amongst even our own family members, much less splashed across the news.

But I think its a refreshing change from all the news about war and rumours of wars all the time. They must be doing some good in the world, or at least trying to. (Andrew??)

Queen Camilla and her patronage of the Osteoporosis Society was in the news today.

I was chatting with one of my health practitioners about it and she said she has it but she caught it early (she's 55) don't wait till your 65 to have a bone density test. I might share some of the health tips she gave me in the Natural Health Forum. Mostly women get it, but some men can have it as well.

I always asked God about it when I got frustrated with men and how dense they could be and He said He made men thick.

The little birdy or the grapevine on the internet told me that Her Royal Highness QC recently had her 79th birthday.

The hags mags were talking about H & M's disastrous week from a 'source' saying they were having a few issues with their visit to the UK.

But this hag mag also had splashy photos of Kate the Great conquering several mountains.

I was just curious at the supermarket and had a look at the mag but I put it back. I wasn't going to buy it. All in all it's nice to know they are keeping busy and not sitting on their thrones twiddling their thumbs.

With all the focus on Spare and Prince Harry, we forget to mention the Heir - Prince William.

We know King Charles won't live forever and eventually the crown will be handed down to his firstborn son. But what do we really know about Prince William? His character and if he's got a handle on world affairs or being trained to be the next King?

Harry revealed in his book that his big brother beat him up, and didn't want to even know him when they both went to Eton. Then, when he got married to Meghan, he sort of snubbed Harry and his new wife, but then it was made a big fuss when they left the UK for the US.

They are now not on speaking terms. However, it's important to remember that these brothers are both Heir and Spare for the next generation, and that Prince William could become King at any moment if anything happened to his dad. What will Prince Williams legacy be? What causes is he involved in? Are they in conflict with the Anglican church of which he will be head of at some point. What is his character like, would you say he is Christian?

We are on a Christian forum and there is this monarchy that claims Christianity or to be part of Christendom. Is this not important?
