Standing in my kitchen doing the dishes (this line was on special request) and looking out at the back yard, I noticed my 1 year old lab stalking a vervet monkey, who was eyeing some of the fruit that dropped from the Loquat tree in our back yard. Skye was not going to allow that monkey in, but boy was that monkey persistent. I stood for probably 10 min observing the two as they continued with their cat and mouse game, then it dawned on me.
Life is exactly that - Spirit vs Flesh
Our flesh being sinful and would dig around in compost heaps, and scrounge around for scraps of filthy food to sustain itself, like the Vervet monkey it would pursue that which it craves and would not give up until its met its basic need. The scripture says in Galatians 5:19-21 "Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God"
While on the other hand we have the Spirit, fighting the desires of the flesh, protecting the soil in which the crops can grow without weeds choking it. And like Skye, fending off the Monkey, and preventing the monkey to enter the yard, so our Spirit fends off sin.
It is up to us, not to allow "compost" heaps to be left open for our flesh to feast on... opening a door for sin to enter will allow the flesh to break through the guarded fortress protected by the Spirit of God.
Galatians 5:16-18 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
