Why did God ask his people to strike down 10,000 men?


Judges 1:4 (NIV)
4 When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
 
*shrugs*

Why do people in modern wars kill as many as they do? The western world will easily defend being at war with "terrorist countries". I think it was some of the same idea back then. The neighbors of the Israelites, for most parts, were just as eager to make war themselves.
