'Stunningly Offensive' Church Paper 'Negates Beliefs of Judaism'

ADL denounces “stunningly offensive” paper by Church of Scotland that negates the core beliefs of Judaism.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has denounced as “stunningly offensive” a paper published by the Church of Scotland that negates the core beliefs of Judaism regarding G-d's promises about the Land of Israel and the Jewish people.

“The very premise of the paper reflects a classic rejection of Judaism in the broadest sense,” said the ADL.

The church paper, entitled “The Inheritance of Abraham,” which was published online by the Church and Society Council of the Church of Scotland just days before its May 18 General Assembly, selectively highlights scriptural and theological claims of Jews to the land, and rejects verses in which the land is promised to the children of Abraham.

The report's introduction describes it as the council's "latest reflection on the ‘questions that need to be faced,' as the political and humanitarian situation in the Holy Land continues to be a source of pain and concern for us all."

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

“This stunningly offensive paper which attempts to undermine the religious legitimacy of Jewish beliefs is a classic rejection of Judaism,” said ADL National Director Abraham Foxman. “By brazenly dismissing Jewish self-understanding of its own Bible - the Torah, the Church of Scotland has disregarded nearly five decades of progress in Jewish-Christian theological dialogue by promoting religious principles which deny the legitimacy of Judaism and were used for centuries to justify the brutal repression of Jews.”

“The paper’s blatant one-sided perspective falsely conflates the political state of Israel and the religious significance of the Land of Israel for both Jews and Christians. The selective citation of Biblical scripture in order to question Israel’s legitimacy is an affront to Jews around the world and to the State of Israel,” he said.

“Since the Biblical era, Jews have maintained an unbroken connection to the land of Israel, and in 1948 the Jewish State of Israel’s legitimacy was firmly established under international law. We call on the leadership of the Church of Scotland to respect the religious basis for the relationship between the Jewish people and Israel and to reject this document,” added Foxman.

The report also promotes a gross distortion of the connection between the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel as being based, in part, “…as a compensation for the suffering of the Holocaust.”

Introduction
Ten years ago the General Assembly received the report Theology of Land and Covenant, from the Board of World Mission, Church and Nation Committee and the Panel on Doctrine.1

This report concluded with encouragement for us to listen more to others, “enriched by new insights through continuing questions that need to be faced”. Since 2003, two new insights have been noted by the General Assembly: in 2007, in the report What Hope for the Middle East?2 the Church of Scotland responded to a declaration from Church leaders in Jerusalem, and endorsed their criticism of Christian Zionism and encouraged members of the Church of Scotland to reject it, and in 2009 Christians in the Holy Land came together and produced Kairos Palestine: a moment of truth, offered as a word of faith, hope and love from the heart of Palestinian Suffering3(information at Home | A Moment of Truth | وقفة حقّ).

With the co-operation and support of the World Mission Council, we present this report in 2013 as our latest reflection on the ‘questions that need to be faced’, as the political and humanitarian situation in the Holy Land continues to be a source of pain and concern for us all.

I am Scot, a Bible believing Christian, living in Scotland....So I am not the least surprised. Good news? Most Christians have left the C of S, it's apostate state is easy to see. I took the descion to leave the church 2 years ago....when I spoke with friends and asked why they still attended after what had happened locally, more stayed than left, attending the village church was convienient, a drive to town too much of a hassle. This was despite their admission of false teaching and the rest. Thank goodness Christ did not have the same apathy to His walk to Calvary...C of S....it's terribly sad but to be expected. The church in our village will soon be sold to be converted to domestic dwelling, happening all over the country. There are strong Christians in this country, worshiping God & holding to His Word.....but few are found in C of S. This is the tip of the iceberg and is what happens when you take God out of the church & society. God Bless, <><

ADL Pulls Out of Jewish-Christian Dialogue to Protest Anti-Israel Letter Signed by Mainline Protestant Leaders

New York, NY, October 10, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has withdrawn from participating in a national Jewish-Christian interfaith dialogue scheduled for October 22 in response to a serious breach of trust by mainline Protestant Church leaders who are participants in the annual interfaith meeting.

Some of the Protestant leaders who were scheduled to be dialogue participants sent an outrageous and biased letter to members of Congress on October 5, accusing Israel of human rights violations against Palestinians and calling for a re-evaluation of U.S. foreign aid to Israel. By failing to alert Jewish dialogue participants beforehand, ADL said the mainline Protestant leaders who signed on to the letter had shown a "blatant lack of sensitivity" and "seriously damaged the foundation for mutual respect."

The letter was signed by the current head of the National Council of Churches, as well as leaders of the Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran, Disciples of Christ and United Church of Christ churches and was issued without notifying any of the churches' longtime Jewish dialogue partners, including ADL.

"In light of the failure of any of the church leaders to reach out to us, we have decided not to attend this interfaith meeting," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "The blatant lack of sensitivity by the Protestant dialogue partners we had been planning to meet with has seriously damaged the foundation for mutual respect, which is essential for meaningful interfaith dialogue."

The letter to Congress from Protestant leaders called for an investigation into possible violations by Israel of the U.S. Foreign Assistance Act and the U.S. Arms Export Control Act, which would make Israel ineligible for U.S. military aid.

"As Christian leaders in the United States, it is our moral responsibility to question the continuation of unconditional U.S. financial assistance to the government of Israel," the letter said. "Realizing a just and lasting peace will require this accountability, as continued U.S. military assistance to Israel -- offered without conditions or accountability -- will only serve to sustain the status quo and Israel's military occupation of the Palestinian territories.

"We request, therefore, that Congress hold Israel accountable to these standards by making the disbursement of U.S. military assistance to Israel contingent on the Israeli government's compliance with applicable U.S. laws and policies."

Mr. Foxman responded: "It is outrageous that mere days after the Iranian president repeated his call for Israel's elimination, these American Protestant leaders would launch a biased attack against the Jewish state by calling on Congress to investigate Israel's use of foreign aid. In its clear bias against Israel, it is striking that their letter fails to also call for an investigation of Palestinian use of U.S. foreign aid, thus once again placing the blame entirely on Israel.

"We hope that other Jewish organizations will understand the level of disrespect the American Jewish community is being shown here and join us in withdrawing from the interfaith gathering," added Mr. Foxman.

Op-Ed: ADL Wrong on Islamic Attack at the Boston Marathon

If you want to know what grassroots Jews are thinking about the international Islamic terror, Israel issues, U.S. politics and more, please don't look to the self-appointed leaders of the Jewish Establishment.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) seemed to want to do everything possible to direct attention away from the possibility that the Boston Marathon attack was the work of Islamic terrorists when it issued an April 15 statement on the attacks.

ADL head Abe Foxman stated:

"This apparent terrorist attack comes during a week when we are already on heightened alert because of the history of extremist-related events that have taken place during the week of April 20th, including the Oklahoma City bombing and the federal raid of the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas. While we do not yet know who was responsible for the attack ... the investigation should look into whether whoever carried out the attack was motivated by extremist views."

The ADL media release went on to mention the fact that Adolf Hitler's birthday was April 20th and did not once use the words Arab, Palestinian, Islam, Islamic or Muslim.

With the news that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were responsible for the attack, the ADL has yet once again proved that it has long outlasted its effectiveness or should revamp its leadership's thinking.
