Get a version that is an easy read with some solid wording as well, like the ESV, NKJV. No to the Message or the Good News Bible. I remember someone gave me the Good News Bible and it wasn't very good for me. I like some of the suggestion given, like getting together with him to read. This is the perfect opportunity to disciple him. I would start with the book of Romans, walk him through that book because you have the Gospel laid out from mans depravity, the Law brings the knowledge of sin, justification by faith, our sin nature, our freedom from condemnation, the Spirit in our lives, the Fathers calling, election, justification and glorification, God's sovereignty, His never giving up on His people, they are called and elect but they still need to hear the word and confuse His name to be saved. His gifts to the Church, measure of faith to us, our service in the body, how to live not being over come by evil, submission to the government, love our neighbor, putting on Christ. Law of liberty and of love, how to live together and Paul's plans to visit Rome and his greetings to those in the Church of Rome.
I guess I am saying add 9-16 to 1-8. If someone reads 10 chapters a day they can read the Bible in three months from from I've heard. I would really disciple him if I were in your position and he is your friend , it is the best opportunity for him to grow and it will help you as well to grow. The blessing of seeing someones eyes being opened up to the Gospel it is such a blessing for the one doing the discipling.
The Lord has entrusted you with the Spiritual growth of one of His child, it is a great blessing. The first guy I was involved with his spiritual growth, ended up becoming my brother-in-law, you never know where it is going to go or end up. He and my sister pioneered a Church, then rescued another Church that was in bad shape. I kind of had a part in the starting of a Church and the rescue of another and have a great brother-in-law.
You helped remind me of all the blessings that came with helping to guide someone in the ways of the Lord. Brother what a great opportunity to help someone in thier spiritual growth in the Lord. I will pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you in this opportunity.
