2 Corinthians 3:1 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you? 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: 3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
Consider this, Bill Belichick has 8 super bowl rings as a coach, seven with New England and one with the NY Giants. Yet, when he was eligible to be voted into the Hall of fame he was not chosen. This created a firestorm as many people considered this so outrageous they called out the Hall of Fame voters. That illustrates what Paul is saying here. The church is a testimony of the ministry they are receiving. There are 29 coaches who are in the hall of fame and none of them has 8 Super bowl rings. If the goal of coaching is not to win the Super Bowl then what is the goal?
The issue many have is "spygate" and "deflategate". In one the Patriots had spies watching the practice of the other team and in the other they had not inflated the footballs to the proper psi. Personally I believe the referees should be the ones that inflate the footballs so there is no dispute and they should be the ones to take them to the field. Second, I highly doubt that Belichick told anyone what psi to inflate the footballs to. It would have been Brady and the quarterback coach who would have done that, if they did it. Also, Brady was suspended for this, so they paid a penalty that was severe and yet still went to ten super bowls winning seven. I would be more inclined to see this as a serious infraction if other teams had also been prosecuted or if hall of fame quarterbacks thought this was a big deal.
As for "spygate" I blame the other super bowl team 50% for that. It is well known that teams are "spying" on one another. This is why coaches put the clipboard in front of their mouth when they speak during a game.
However, it raises the issue of righteousness and character. I agree that cheating must be punished. The worst form is when they throw games, like the Chicago Whitesocks. So then, was Belichick snubbed because others were jealous or because they were trying to keep out cheating? In difficult calls like this I look to the Lord to judge. Following Brady's suspension for deflategate he went on his "revenge tour" where he came after four games out, led the team to the Super bowl and defeated the Atlanta Falcons in the greatest comeback of Super Bowl history. To me that was where we got to see what was "written in the hearts" of that team. If they had been cheaters we would not have seen that. As for spygate the team and Belichick were both fined and the team lost a first round draft pick. After that event they went to five super bowls and won three. Again, if Belichick's success was based on cheating we would not have seen that response. I am not making excuses, rather I am pointing out that many coaches looked at that and dismissed it as part of the game. I wanted to believe that the reason for their success was that they were cheaters, but that is simply not true. I believe that you can look at the team and their performance as "the letter of commendation" for Belichick.
I would also say that many people, myself included, questioned whether Brady's success was because of him, or because he was simply on a good team? In other words was he the factor in them winning, or was he simply good at not losing the game? That question was fully answered when he went to Tampa Bay, put that team on his back, and made them Super Bowl winners.
Now I want to turn this back to the apostle Paul. Look at the success of the church over 2,000 years. Can there be any doubt that Paul's ministry is one of the critical factors in the success of the church? In fact it is the New Testament, the incarnated word of God, that is the reason for the success of the church globally. It is truly astounding. Don't simply try to go back to Corinth and look at those saints, look at what has been built up over 2,000 years. We are all building on the foundation that Paul laid as a wise master builder. You have to be an idiot to try and ignore some of Paul's ministry. The apostasy refers to those who have departed from this ministry and their LGBTQ+ churches are an expression of these idiots.
