Acts 3:2 And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; 3 Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. 4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. 5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7 And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8 And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God: 10 And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him. 11 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering.
Acts is given to us as a pattern. One brother said that the healing miracles are the "dinner bell for the gospel". This is perfectly portrayed here, you can see that by healing this man it was like ringing a dinner bell and everyone ran over there to be fed. In the gospels Jesus "sent them to preach the gospel and heal the sick". Somehow we have no issue with being sent to preach the gospel, but how often does that include healing the sick? Recently I heard a report from those who had gone to Peru to hand out wheelchairs to those in need. That is a good work, a compassionate work, but it isn't "healing the sick". Imagine what would have happened in Lima, a city of 10 million if instead of handing out a few dozen wheelchairs they had healed a few dozen people who were wheel chair bound? Instead of me hearing the news in a small gathering it would have been front page news and instead of a few hundred grateful people you would have had a hundred thousand showing up to gospel rallies. Jesus said He desires that His joy would be in us and that our joy would be made full. Imagine how joyful for all these people in wheelchairs to be healed of that sickness.
12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?
Preaching the gospel is a joint effort with God, we are coworkers with God. He is the one that heals, we can't do that, but we are the ones who testify, who are witnesses, and share concerning the Lord. If your gospel message is only what you can do and doesn't give place for God to do His work then don't be surprised that the results are based on your strength and not on God's.
13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.
Notice how quickly Peter turns from glorifying Jesus to convicting them of sin. The pattern is very simple God heals the man --> Everyone gathers around --> Peter gives all glory to Jesus --> Peter convicts them of sin.
14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
The crucifixion was in early spring and this is in late summer. People want to forget things like this but Peter let's them know that this is not going away. Today you could do the same thing with the Pandemic, pointing out that everyone desired a liar named Fauci rather than those who were speaking the truth to them.
16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
This is why the healing ministry needs to be a central part of the gospel. It is the evidence that Jesus is the Prince of Life.
17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.
That is also why they listened to Fauci, "he was an expert". In a crisis everyone is looking to the expert, everyone is ignorant.
18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
So now Peter is turning from convicting them to pointing out that what happened was a fulfillment of prophecy. You could do the same thing with the Pandemic, turning to Joel and showing that it was a fulfillment of prophecy, a sign that the day of the Lord is nigh.
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.
You see, the fulfillment of prophecy tells you that the day of the Lord is at hand, therefore you need to repent now.
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
This is how God operates. Here is the law, you sinned, you fell short of the glory of God, but here is Jesus, here is what it looks like when you are filled with the word of God and live it out. Christ in you, the hope of glory.
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
This is crucial, this explains the entire church age. We walk by faith, not by sight. Hope that is seen is not hope. Jesus is in the heavens to draw out those that walk by faith, those who hope in what they don't see. It is just like the refining of silver where you melt it and scoop off the dross.
22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
God is the one who knows the hearts. If you loved God you would have been looking and seeking for the one that Moses was talking about. Being indifferent or ambivalent about Jesus reveals where your heart is.
23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
This is one step worse, this is willful disregard. You have those who are looking for and seeking the Lord, then you have those who are indifferent, and now you have those who "will not hear" what the Lord has to say. For example there is an archaelogical dig right now trying to confirm Noah's ark and they are receiving death threats. That is an example of someone who "will not hear the prophet" that God "shall destroy".
24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
There are many, many prophecies that have been fulfilled and you could use any of them in a message following this formula.
25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
This is the covenant that we are preaching. To be brought into this covenant is to be saved. Now being healed is a blessing. Our covenant includes the fact that all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. What better way to demonstrate that than by having God heal someone at the outset of this message.
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
