Today's toad: laundry.
or is it taking the kids to the 2:00 Eggstravaganza (their word not mine!) at church for the kiddies.

Either way, time to shower and face the day.
See yall later... Hmmm. maybe yall are becoming church D for me. (reference to someone else's Awesome thread.)

The toad I had to swallow today was having to say goodbye to my twin, her husband, and my brother since they came up to visit this weekend. Everything seems to be okay whenever all my family is around. We had so much fun. They live 6.5 hours away from me, so it was good to see them. I cry every time I have to say goodbye.

And that brings me to the real toad I have to swallow with all of that: As you get older, things change and transition. I remember the days when my entire family (aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, etc) would get together, and us children would all play while the adults talked and took care of things. Now, as we're all growing up, we're able to all get together less often because people have moved, are getting married and have their own things and other families to visit, etc.

Sometimes I don't mind growing up, I enjoy the new experiences I get to have and how much bigger God becomes to me. But then there are many times when I long for those days of childhood, where I didn't have to worry about anything and when everything was simple. It's funny, when I was a kid I remember thinking I couldn't wait to become an adult. Why did no one tell me it isn't as much fun as you think? :P Actually, I think people did tell me that, but I was too young to want to listen or understand. ;)

Missed the grandbaby's 3rd Easter... :(. Eat processed pressed ham and bad potato salad with a smile...:(
He reigns...

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.

Today's toad was dealing with a migraine, and now it's dealing with the awkward after effects. Hopefully I won't have to deal with this tomorrow.

Last night I discovered a Bonus Toad... my 7 yr old had failed to do some of his class work last week, which meant that he was untrue when he told me all weekend that he had no homework all weekend... it made for a late night. The worst of it is, he is so very much like me. My own dyslexia & dysgraphia, combined with my nerdiness & desire for perfection would lead me to a paralysis over writing assignments as a child (and sometimes still). Muh boy ain't been diagnosed as lysdexic yet, but I see a strong potential for it. (like the time he used those foam peel and stick letters to make a craft at Vacation Bible School with the long version of his first name on it (7 letters in stead of 4) and I commented how cool it was that he did it mirror image and then we had a 7 minute discussion about that it really was mirror image...he'd just not realized it.) Because I can see the same gears turning inside his head that turned in mine, I So Very Much want to provide him an escape from doing his writing... but because I have been there I know all the more that with this child I cannot. Even into my 30's I sometimes am brought to the point of tears when faced with having to do major writings (you'd never know it from my uberlong posts, tho :/ ) and all the reading that is involved with filling out the endless stream of Forms society creates (School registrations, taxes, job applications, health insurance...) can leave me feeling intimidated. {this from a man who can pull a four point in grad school}
Oh how I wanted to give him an out. Oh how I could understand his struggle with it. Oh how I just wanted the stuff done so we could go to bed.

Today's Toad?
Monday.
The getting back to routine. The making everything go just so. The pulling off the appearance that I have it all together as I frantically run from being dad to being employee and back again. The planning and execution of meals that my kids will actually eat that have no drive-thru component.
After Saturday, I feel cheated of my weekend, and much of Sunday (that is, the parts not consumed by Easter Activities - Did I mention that at the giant outdoor Easter Carnival & Egg hunt I ended up with 2 extra kids that I was responsible for?!?)... oh yes, much of Sunday was spent trying to work through the emotional garbage of Saturday... while remaining active in the discussion and study in Bible Class, while helping with Children's Church, while driving, while cooking and being Dad, while teaching the kids how to do laundry, while getting homework done, while... while wishing I had a pause button.
Ack! lookathetime! At least this morning I am going in to work late so that I can be there while Boychild receives a minor award at school.

"...Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time, Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, Taking, as Jesus did, This sinful world as it is, Not as I would have it, Trusting that You will make all things right, If I surrender to Your will, So that I may be reasonably happy in this life, And supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen" -Reinhold Niebuhr
I'm not much for liturgy, but This Is Toadsauce. It helps the toad go down. The full prayer works better. ;)

My heart goes out to ya'. I am not a parent, but my Mom had to raise me alone,go to school & keep a job & do all her Jesus stuff from the time I was around 4 till she re-married when I was 10. No easy task. I have no idea how single parents handle all the pressure. Sounds like to me yer' doing what needs to be done. Don't get discouraged. I know it's easier said than done. Will be praying for your son as well.

Note to self... if I want to avoid tearing up on my breaks, I should not check CC at work.
Meh, they've all seen me cry before. Whateves.

GBY, Brother. Maybe sometime you could PM me some tips on how to single parent from the perspective of an adult child of a single parent.

There's the bell, back to the grind.

Wasn't familiar with the "toad swallowing" expression, but I like it!

Today's toad:
preparing food for the four day work week - looking to eat healthier, which equals meal planning.
off today from regular job, but teaching a piano lesson, then rehearsal. I'm not in the mood for this, but hopefully will be at 5:00.
laundry
cleaning the cat box
finishing my taxes (I owe this year)

I need to eat healthier.

Are frogs legs healthy? We don't have any toads.

The toad I swallowed today was working an 8 hour shift with a mild migraine. Right behind my eye. I couldn't take the usual Imitrex because they knock me out. I tried calling in, and my manager made it quite clear that I should either come in, or never show up again. So I showed up. The headache has receded some, but it will be back... oh, I can feel it lurking.

That's a bit of a horned toad 800px-Federal_horned_toad_pic_crop.jpg

Welcome to another aspect of being an adult. Sick days are something I only take when one of my Kids is sick... or when the weather is just too nice to go to work. ;)

I was fortunate enough to only almost throw up once. My manager is angry at me though. Apparently I don't work as well with a migraine. Uh... I wonder why.

Now if i would have been you. I would have barfed on the manager. then said see I told you i wasnt feeling well.

Tonight, about bedtime, I discovered the toad.
Three assignments that my son failed to complete in class, sent home as homework.
It takes someone as bull headed as me to take on someone as bull headed as him.
The work is now 90% complete and he is in bed.
10% in the morning and he will hate how tired he is all day tomorrow.
So will his teacher.
I think I'll email her to let her know he is tired and why.
Maybe she will enforce better boundaries at school and get him to get it done there.
Maybe I'll make a fortune selling steel umbrellas tomorrow when pigs start to fly.

Today's toad hopped right past me, luckily...

No jury duty! CANCELLED!

Which means I did NOT have to wake up at 4:30 this morning to start getting everyone ready to leave, did NOT have to wake my son up long before he was ready, did NOT have to drive the 30 miles in the dark on a deer and skunk-infested highway, did NOT have to impose on my sister-in-law at an indecent hour.

Instead of all that, I have to figure out where my kitchen went.

I'll take the trade.

'hope tomorrow is better for you, your son AND the teacher :)

well, things at home went better last night (not so much yesterday morning since he had to finish off a little homework before breakfast).
With firm boundaries that are gentle in their enforcement, he then knows where the fences to his pasture are and can prance like a proud pony all he wants. He seems to thrive best when he knows that things are under control, that he is not that control, and that things are going to be ok.
What he doesn't do well with is anything ADDITIONAL that serves to teach the lesson (true or not) that life is beyond control and to expect some chaos. His response? He brings the chaos like a nice guest brings an extra hors d'oeuvre to yer informal shindig. My point feels proven by the fact that yesterday I got a report shing him having done well with his school work all day, but having had some problem of some sort with FIGHTING during lunch and or recess. <super big sigh> can they not be a little more specific here? how can I get to the root of the issue with him if they won't even tell me what continent the forest is on? was this a response to bullying or him instigating something?

I do feel blessed at the opportunity to raise my own kids. <eyes the rusty channel-locks> If it should come to it, I would rather give up my hind teeth than the two of them. Fortunately this is not something anticipated for my life. Ever.
