Our family really needs your prayers today. We have had an 18 yr. old friend of my daughters living with us for the last few months. I will call her Emma. We met Emma and her dad at church. Emma's dad is a troubled man who many have expressed concern over. He has recently been in recovery for drug/alcohol addiction. He is not Emma's real father and there is no mother as he seemingly acquired custody of Emma while serving in the military in another country when she was only a baby. He and his family are the only family she has ever known.
Shortly after she turned 18 he kicked her out. His reasons: she wanted to talk on the phone, go places with her friends/boyfriend, and stay out til all hours of the night- 10 or 11 o'clock. Also,he wanted her to get a job and a drivers license- but he wouldn't take her to do these things himself.
We made room for her and began helping her to get on track with her life. She has really been through alot. A few days ago, she showed me scars on her wrist and forearm from cutting herself and talked about how often life feels overwhelming. She thinks about death, even as far as to how she would go about it. She wants to move on with her life but she is so overwhelmed with all the changes and has trouble adjusting to the rules and boundaries of our family. She says she knows she is better off with us but she misses what is familiar to her. I understand this totally.
Now her dad has given her a house key, is begging her to come home, and says he will help her and allow her some freedom. She hesitates because she says he never does what he promises. She has gone to spend the weekend with him now and to try to decide what she wants to do.
My husband and I agree that we do not want to stand in the way of reconciliation. We also cannot operate as a revolving door. Emma needs counseling among other things but we find ourselves unable to help her while she is so torn between us and her dad. We don't want to make a decision for her. We are asking for prayer for God's will concerning Emma's life, her dad, and what is best for our family as well. We have all been so torn and just need some guidance and peace that we are doing what God wants us to do.

That is certainly a lot. Bless you and your husband for being there to open your home to her when she needed it.

In my opinion, it would be wise for Emma to continue to stay with your family, but try to build things with her dad if he is expressing a desire to do so. She needs to proceed with caution, and it sounds as if noone has ever taught her how to do so. I do not think if you and your husband would begin to teach her these valuable life skills that you would be standing in the way of reconcilliation.

I am a firm beleiver that the best predictor of someones future behavior is their past behavior, UNLESS they set a new pattern. It can take time to see if a new pattern is established. If she says that he never follows through on things or his promises, then that is a good indication that she should be shown that it is ok to not make a choice to return to his home now.

She is 18, and as an adult should start to make adult decisions. It sounds like you and your husband just might be the blessing this young lady has been missing for a long time. :)

Blessings

Feel for u mate
yr doing a great thing for a cherished young person
I dont hav any great advise
maybe just 2 things
be careful not to overdo things so that Gods love doesnt shine throo
the other is the experience of a 52 yr old friend of mine
she had a shocking, tragic childhood
beyong describing here
but she was dispised from the moment she was adopted at about 2 months
drinking from about 10
drugs not long after
living on the streets from 13

at about 15 she stumbled across a Christian family who invited her home for tea
she didnt trust anyone and was going to say no, but she was so starving she accepted
she ended up being a part of the family
but never stayed long
there was a conection, but as soon as she felt a closeness she paniced and fled
eventually moving interstate

she would ring for help with money or something every so often
but it was always forthcoming and with no judgement

and then late last year, she herself gave her heart to our Lord
I was privilaged to watch some of that process
and helped in that i am also a broken person from childhood experiences
yet she saw God in me (thankyou God)

the one thing i feel strongly about is the judgement
never judge even the tiniest thing

sorry there is just so much i could share

i hope this and Gods answers to pray will help

Thank you grace and rebelfrog for your insights. Emma chose to pack up all of her things today and it was with heavy hearts we took her back to her fathers home. Before leaving she wrote sweet good-bye letters to each one in the house and left them on our beds and table. She was quiet, withdrawn and acted as if she were headed to the gallows. I am very worried about her. And I miss her already. Please continue to keep her in your prayers.

tell her as a teen that was kicked out and went back home six months later...

DON'T DO IT!!!! Once you are out, stay out!!!!! Unless God tells you to go back. I was kicked out when I was 17, and I went back when the family I was living and nannying for decided to move to texas. I regret going back, because after going... things were on a honey moon period for a while....

After that, though, stuff hit the fan harder than ever before and I was left in a worse place than before. I finally, after years of being suicidal in thought, actually attempted suicide over all the crud starting all over again....

Tell her to pray for him, and forgive, but just gently let him know that she's enjoying getting her feet under her and staying with you guys. Have her go back for dinner, etc... but tell her not to stay.

:)

I see, the Lord gave her a beautiful family that cares about her. I will pray for her and your family. When the Lords start.. He will finished.. and maybe more as you ever expected. I don´t believe it is a coincidense that she met your family. He got His hands in it.

And when one of His sheeps is missing He is going after her. I will pray for love, strength, wisdom for you and your family
for the young woman..I will pray for peace, wisdom..healing. And that she will be a witness to her father. So he knows that he need Jesus too.

Pls tell how it is going now..

Agreeing with you in prayer for Emma. Breakthrough Father in her life and set everything in order for her to be safe and secure. Free her from torment and raise a standard against it. Fill her heart with Love. Let anything working against Your Love for her Father be bound in Jesus Name. No evil shall befall her, no plague shall come near her dwelling. The Lord has given commandment to save her, in Jesus Name.

Peace and understanding to her heart and mind and to her dad's heart and mind. They are covered by the Lord Jesus. Make the best way for her to go clear and defined, to her and to those around her.

Give her the strength and courage to move forward in You Lord. Keep her, shine on her, and put love for her in all the hearts of those around her. Put purpose in her heart, let her see it. Give her a good reason to live, teach her hands to war and set her in high places. Anoint her for prayer and worship. Seal her unto You Lord Jesus, perfect Love in her heart. She will live and declare the works of the Lord.

I speak for the way to be made in Jesus Name. I speak for everything coming up against God's will for her life, through other people or any other way, to be bound in Jesus Name. Anything that has been spoken over her life, or agreed to, that is not in agreement with Love, be broken now, be far from her, in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen

Peace, grace, and healing increase and multiply around her, her dad, their house, in their hearts and minds and to all the people involved in her life. Peace to her city and all her neighbors. Bring the answers to her Lord, to all concerning her, expose anything that needs to be exposed and give wisdom to all people involved in her life.

Father, bring peace to her relationships and I speak for any false accusations to stop, and for any torment to stop. Peace to the storms. Truth, set her free, in Jesus Name. Doubt be replaced with faith and fear, be replaced with love, the Lord's joy is her strength, in Jesus Name, Amen Amen

.....Holy Spirit, give her good dreams, in Jesus Name. Peace over her room and bed.

Thank you all for your prayers. Please keep praying. Having Emma here put a strain on the friendship between she and my daughter. The two are at odds right now and it is having a ripple effect on the other kids in the youth group at our church. One of the boys from the group called at nearly midnight last night to inform me of some false rumors circulating concerning the whole situation. He was in torment and felt that he had lost friends. How has it come to this? My husband and I still want to help Emma and care for her deeply. She is not perfect and has wronged my daughter so my daughter expects my support and loyalty. Yet, neither is my daughter perfect and has wronged Emma in return. Both stand in need of forgiveness and understanding of the other. The peace of the other kids would soon follow. Please pray that God will convict and move both of their hearts to do the right thing, that He will calm this storm and grant peace to all the ones involved. Also. would you please pray that God would guide my husband and I to help these kids? We are not "qualified" youth ministers or even leaders of the youth but He has called us to this purpose for some reason. I feel so inadequate.
