Hey Everyone,

Just something I've been thinking about lately: if a person cheats, are they more likely to cheat again? How likely is it for someone with a history of cheating to change and not cheat the next time? Does it depend on the level of cheating--for example, if someone is hooking up with someone on the internet, through Facebook, texts, etc. but not in person, are they more likely to stop/remain faithful than someone who physically cheats?

And what about emotional cheating? If a person forms a close emotional bond with another besides their spouse or significant other... How likely are they to come to repentance and faithfulness after straying from the path? Many people do not even feel this is cheating.

Now, I am NOT talking about God's power of transformation--OF COURSE GOD CAN TRANSFORM AND CHANGE A PERSON'S HEART. But we all know that most likely, the process will not be POOF!!! and now the person is automatically remorseful, repentant, and faithful. Many who cheat are only sorry they got caught, with no regard to the fact that they devastated another person or their families... not that the cheating person isn't someone who is hurting as well.

However, I personally suspect that when someone initially toys with the idea of cheating, it's a tough tug-of-war within their heart and soul. But once they DO decide to cross the line... it becomes a little easier to keep going over it. At least, this seems to be what I've heard so many times, as I have watched many friends go through the cycle of finding out their spouse is cheating... then hey, they've reconciled... they're back together... they're trying to "work things out"... they're talking to their pastor... they're in couples counseling... and then no, their significant other is cheating... again... and what little was there to be rebuilt is once again smashed to smithereens.

What about all of you who grew up with the pain of a parent or both who cheated on each other? From your perspective, how likely is the person to actually stop cheating? I would like to hear your stories and opinions of observance, experience, and coping.

For another up-close example, all you have to do is look at God's OT relationship with His people, as they cheated... again, and again, and again. God is all-powerful, but He allows human will to choose what it chooses. God could have transformed them all to never cheat on Him again, but they chose to keep doing so... as we all do, repeatedly, in our own ways. Is it just human nature? Yes, we all sin... but where do we draw the line between someone who made a mistake, and someone who will not change?

Would you begin a relationship with someone who has cheated on their significant other or spouse? Why or why not? Where, for you, is the line between sincere repentance and renewed living vs. a habitual sin that a person keeps going back to? (Like drinking too much or drug addiction.)

I am really interested in what other Christians believe about this pressing subject, as I'm seeing so many people dealing with it in their everyday lives (including, of course, within the church.)

P.S. The poll is anonymous and multiple choice, so feel free to give your most honest answers.

Sorry for all the typos, folks... as usual, I'm running on more thoughts than sleep and it really shows!!! :)

I'm also very interested to see in the poll, how many people say, "God can change cheaters!!"

But yet, they also say they are unwilling to date a cheater. If so, and if they truly believe God can change someone, why would they then say they won't date someone with a history of cheating?

(By the way, I fit under this category. If it was, let's say, a one-time moment-of-weakness type of thing, I could understand that. If it was a 3-year affair... I'd be like, "Um, I'll pray for you... and wish you the best!" but I would not get involved because I would definitely not be comfortable with this. Yes, I believe God can change hearts completely... but, like instantaneous miracles of healing, unfortunately, I think it's very, very rare.)

I could be wrong, but these are just my thoughts... and now I'd like to hear yours!! :)

I think it's different with each person. Personally speaking I've never seen a cheater that has stopped being a cheater. But that doesn't mean it isn't possible. I think that sometimes whenever you cross a line the more you cross it, the easier it gets til one day you don't even see a line anymore. I don't tolerate cheaters at all. I think if a guy thinks he can do better than me then he needs to go and do that and leave me be. I think that is the worst thing to do to a person. If you don't want to be with them then you just need to tell them instead of trying to have your cake and eat it too. My sister's ex husband did this to her throughout their entire marriage and including whenever she was pregnant with his child. I understand that not every man is like that but it doesn't change my personal feelings on it. I saw what it did to her and she became a shell of herself, it was horrible. She is much better now and divorced from him and is currently dating a good man. The point being that a person that cheats well it says a lot about that person. What kind of person they are and who they put first but he also wasn't a christian so I don't have any experience with that. I just have what I know.

Cheating is not a singular character flaw... moving forward cautiously should give opportunity to reveal the others before finding yourself cheated on.

A cheater is a cheater is a cheater... A cheater will not change.
^ I strongly disagree with this one. God can change hearts and heal, if the person is willing on changing. Everything is possible.

I agree completely, Arwen... but for everyone who says that... Are you willing to date someone with a history of cheating? Why or why not? And would you stay with someone who cheats on you?

As Christians, of course we all believe God can change a heart. So does that mean we should all be "open-minded" to dating or staying with a cheater? Why or why not?

If we deny someone because of their past, despite who they are now, then should any sinner have the right to be with anyone? I've never cheated on someone, but there are things in my past I would hope my future partner can accept and see past. But of course I think this is a situation you have to take case by case based on whether they are truly repentant or just say they are (but I don't think that applies to cheating alone).

I don't know, depends.

Something else I want to bring into consideration is that someone who is cheating on you is literally endangering your life.

Personal example: married couple, finds out they are infertile, with the woman being the one who cannot have children. Husband proceeds to cheat on her multiple times and with multiple women, saying he is angry that she cannot have his children. He does not use any kind of protection while cheating--AND EVEN IF A CHEATER did use protection, we ALL know, of course, that this is neither excusable nor foolproof.

Couple tries to reconcile... has normal married interactions.

The person who cheats is subjecting their body to possible deadly diseases... A cheater is literally toying with your life... and risks bringing home a myriad of health threats... which, of course, includes HIV.

What does the spouse who is being cheated on say in the meantime? "Oh, God can change their heart..." And hope/wait for change while continuing on with the cheating spouse? Keep in mind, the cheater's actions are literally threatening their life and ability to be, not only a spouse, but caretaker to their children and irreplaceable part of their own families.

People often seem to forget/overlook that cheating really can be a life-and-death situation. (One woman I spoke to DID contract HIV from her unfaithful husband. He never even told her because he was afraid she would leave him--she found out through her doctor--and their daughter, praise God, was born HIV negative. But not all are so fortunate.)

I've not been exposed to much cheating, so I can't say I know much about cheaters from personal experience.

Being cheated on is my worst fear in a relationship. It is the #1 thing that a guy could do to me to completely shatter my heart. I already have a hard time trusting people, so if my guy did that, it would not only kill my trust completely in him, it would shatter MY confidence as well. I already struggle with not feeling good enough for someone, so to have a guy that is supposed to be with me go to another girl would only seem to confirm that.

Though I guess the real question is whether or not I'd start a relationship with someone who had cheated previously before they met me, correct? In that case, we all have a past. We all have sins, struggles, and stupid whims in the present. Sometimes I wonder who is going to want me because of mine. So, I wouldn't want to condemn someone as "undateable" because of mistakes they had made in their past, especially if they have truly repented of what they did and not just the fact that they got caught. But I will be honest in saying that I feel like it'd be a struggle for me.

I never disqualify anybody for their past. If I like you and think your cute, I'll probably go out with you unless you do something stupid in to mess it up. That's my philosophy anyway, lol.

I would say it depends on every person. A person can be a cheater for the rest of his/her lives or maybe retired from being one when he/she is in their 70's or get killed/shot for being a cheater (yes it happened) or can possibly change and be reformed if they are willing or meet a partner who could really change them. Some can handle cheaters and become martyrs in the relationship and some just can't.

I know few friends who are cheaters (guys) and friends who had been cheated on (girls). Being a cheater doesn't mean you're a bad person or something, a person can be awesomely nice the only defect in their personality is, they cheat. It's like a disease in them and some became cheaters because they were cheated on first.

I have a childhood friend who is a martyr "UNTIL NOW", with this guy who cheated on her many times in their on/off unbelievably 9-year relationship. She tried to forget him and even ended to have a lesbian partner just to forget the guy cuz finally she realized the guy made her so dumb already, but in the end she still find herself coming back with this guy. And the only thing that she would say to those who give her advice is... just let me, I'm happy... (sigh) and yes the guy is nice it's just that he really is a certified playboy and actually the guy's father is a playboy too.

Another girl friend of mine who like this guy who happened to be my friend at work before but he didn't stay long in the company and who happens to be a playboy too. She wanted to know the guy. I warned her that the guy is really nice but he's a playboy. She said all she wanted is to make friends, so okay... I told the guy about her and gave her number to him, eventually after a month I found out they're already together. Their relationship lasted for 2 years, but after a year that's where the rough moments started. The girl came to my place crying, telling me that they broke off already cuz she found out he's with another girl too. She was more hurt cuz their break-up was over the phone only and she wanted to have a formal break-up. So I talked to the guy that if he can't be faithful at least break it off in a decent way cuz my friend doesn't deserved it. The next thing I know they're together again, until we caught him with this girl when we went home late because of this midnight sale. The guy was shocked when we were heading to where they are. My friend punched him (ouchy!)and she confronted the girl, the other girl said I'm professional and you're professional so let's not make a scene here...(haha funny girl) that was the first time I saw my friend so mad but they talk in a nice way anyway. While the 2 girls were talking, the guy was begging me to go get my friend and leave and I told him, No let them talk! And jokingly I told the guy... wow you are so handsome... look at that... two girls are fighting over you... But still, after that dramatic scene, they're together again.
Finally, it got to the point where it was totally over and that's when the guy went to a different city to work, only to find out the girl was there too, but my friend said anyway that she didn't regret anything, even giving herself to him. For her, at some point the guy made her happy and currently my friend is working in Australia, she got a job transfer there. At least, they're fine now.

So it really depends...I couldn't see myself being a martyr. If the guy cheated on me once, I just can't be with the guy anymore. I will give my 100% trust and commitment to my partner but if he breaks it, it's really over unless he can prove it to me that he really is so sorry of what he did and he would be willing to climb Mt. Everest to prove it then maybe... maybe...hehehe.

This is a bit of a presumption on time. If someone i was interested in cheat six months ago, i would have a problem with getting involved with them. If that person had cheat a few years ago and not since, i could look past that. Its true we can't hold every past sin against a person, but we still have to consider if they are truly changed, and how much opportunity to prove it. We are to use wisdom in our choices.
Also, the post said to bypass the idea that God can change people, and was asking that a person who cheats, can they change, without God in their life?

She would kill me but since she isn't on here. This did happen to someone I know. Her husband kept cheating on her while she was pregnant. And a few months after she gave birth, she went to go and get tested and was positive for an incurable STD. While it was not HIV or AIDS she will live will it for the rest of her life and has to take medicine daily. I felt so bad for her because she didn't do anything wrong her husband brought that into their marriage by his infidelity.

Gosh that is sad. :(

Of course God can change anyone, given they are willing to submit their hearts, minds, bodies to him...that goes without saying. Personally, before I ever got saved,I always thought "once a cheater, always a cheater". I suppose a bit of me still feels that way. If I were to get involved with a woman again & she told me,"hey..by the way,I've cheated on the men I've dated before, just a heads up." - I'd be glad that she was honest with me to share that, but if in my heart I couldn't accept the fact that she'd done that, moved on now etc...then I wouldn't bother being with her. I don't think it would be a healthy relationship if I always felt worried or paranoid that she might be or could possibly cheat on me in the future. Besides,I don't think that God would want me in a relationship like that. (or her for that matter) Personally,if you have trust issues with the opposite sex,I'd say hold off on getting involved until you've allowed God to heal you in that area or give you a peace,as to where you can date a person & not be concerned with their past infidelity. (as always..just my opinion...bring on the hate. LOL)

Hey Everyone,

Just to clarify, when I wrote about "personal examples" of people's stories, it was not about me personally but rather, people I have have the privilege of knowing or talking to over the years (with all identifying factors removed/slightly changed for the sake of privacy -- they are also people I had conversations with during a class, etc., and did not keep in touch with.)

And, I wanted to say, thanks for all the honest answers. I was very impressed--and touched--to see some very personal answers both here and in the poll. Thank you all for being brave enough to share your thoughts and experiences--please continue if you should so wish.

I'm not saying there are necessarily any absolute or "one size fits all" answers... The goal of this thread was to try to open up the floor for discussions of opinion and personal experience.

Here is why you should never cheat:

Are we talking about physically cheating or are we talking about all forms of it? We tend to forget that cheating is cheating, whether it be on a spouse or on your taxes. Cheating is essentially the assumption that our desire (for whatever) supersedes our vow or commitment. We've vowed to not have sex with anyone but our significant other, or we've vowed to not cheat on a test, we've vowed to follow God but chose to commit whatever sin we deem worthy. See, we cheat all the time. There isn't a single one of us who can claim to have never cheated. You could even argue that sin (some sins more than others) is a violation or "cheat" on God.

If you are only speaking of cheating in a dating/marriage sense, then I personally believe that any physical, emotional, or digital interaction with someone other than your significant other is cheating. I also believe that when we submit to God, He can and will change our character and therefore our behavior. In my opinion God is a cognitive-behavioral practitioner. He doesn't put much stock in who you used to be or what you used to do. No, He's concerned about who you are and what you'll become. If you want to change your behavior, change your mind/thoughts first. Speaking as someone who used to play for the other team (meaning Satan and his friends), I know that I know that I know God can and will change any one when they seek Him in earnest.

I mean I wouldnt ever judge a cheater but its one of the few things if i found out about even if it had been in a past relationship I wouldnt date them. Just an immediate nope, not worth my time.
