There is no relationship between these two items and the Christ child. They are simply traditions that grew up out of Christmas celebrations past which really have no relevance to the biblical Christmas story.
With that said, they are fun traditions, so as long as you don't dishonor Christ by following these traditions, there is no reason to not follow them.

Historically, legend has it, Martin Luther saw stars shining through the Christmas tree and adopted it to have special meaning. The stockings, again a legend, were based on a man having compassion on two girls whose father could not pay the dowery in order that they might be married (a significant concern in the day) When they hung their stockings to dry, he flipped coins into each to offer them hope. They were then able to marry.
They are not related to the birth of the Christ child........they are a part of the secular celebration of Christmas.
That being said.......however........as with anything else........it is what is in one's heart that matters...........these can be used during the Christmas season without being sinful.......regardless of what some will tell you...........They only become sinful IF THEY are put BEFORE GOD! And that applies to anything......home, job, car, money, food, whatever
