The Church walks in newness of spirit and not in oldness of the letter (Romans 7.6)
We are often too attached to the past and to rules, especially when we are victims of abuse. However, we must always keep in mind that:
Although they may deserve punishment, we must guard our hearts, since it is the source of life (Prov 4.23), as well as evil designs (Mark 7.20-23). We do not allow the wicked to succeed in dirtying our heart, leaving it in complete darkness, and therefore unable to realize that it may be tripping over something valuable.
Although laws have their value, they should only be a reference to guide the new in the faith to Christ (Galatians 3:24, 25). However, the ultimate goal is direct communion with Christ, hearing right from His mouth the right decision to be made in every situation we live in.
In short: the Church walks in newness of life (Rm 6.4), forgetting the things that remain behind, and advancing to those that are before her, continuing to the target, for the prize of the sovereign vocation of God in Christ Jesus (Fp 3.13,14).
