It's sad that Jesus went through it all so that we have the right to be saved when we join to His Spirit (I Corinthians 6:17) by His POWER who comes upon us (Acts 1:8) after Holy Spirit baptism (Acts 1:5) Who "QUICKENS" (I Corinthians 15:45) our "DEAD spirits" (Romans 5:12-14; I Corinthians 15:21-22) "back to life" (Ephesians 2:1) but today's Christians prefer a powerless water baptism for the "one baptism" (Ephesians 4:5) that does NOTHING but leave them "DEAD spirits" on their way to HELL in "unbelief" (Revelation 21:8).
It's as if JESUS DIED IN VAIN!

Although that isn't specifically mentioned in Scripture, he isn't wrong to make such a broad assumption. I used to work a lot of late evening hours traipsing through thick brush and high grass searching for buried telephone equipment in the summer down here in south LA. It was still very warm even after the sun went down and the gnats would swarm to the fresh cuts and scrapes I'd get moving through all that stuff.The only thing that kept them away was this stuff we had made by Rainbow called "Jungle Formula Insect Repellent". I swear that stuff could probably peel off automotive paint

It's not unreasonable for a preacher to assume gnats and insects harassed Jesus as He hung on the Cross. Crucifixion is well documented in history and you might want to research it for yourself.
History and documentaries tell you a lot about crucifixions, and they are right.
But I want to tell you that the Church tells a different story about Christ' crucifixion. It doesn't involve bloody smells and insects...
Believe the verse from Ephesians. Believe the truth. Not Mel Gibson or history channel, or Renaissance art. They may be well-intentioned, but they do not know what they are talking about. They imagine and assume. They speculate (speculation is the field of culture).
The Church has an entirely different perspective.
You won't understand right now. Just think about Ephesians. The fragrance. Jesus Christ is sweet.

OK, the "sweet smelling savor" of Ephesians 5:2 KJV refers to the OT sacrifice of the lamb, where the fat was separated from the carcass and burned - the fat represented sin and God said the smell of the burning fat was a "sweet smelling savor" to Him in His nostrils. Now, anyone whose ever smelled burning fat knows how bad it smells...really bad! But, to God it was "sweet smelling"? Really? YES.
Because the burning fat represented the final destruction of sin from the universe, a thought so sweet and sublime in the mind of our Lord. The sacrifice of Him Who knew no sin but became sin for us makes it possible for God to put an end to sin's existence but also to be the Justifier of them which believe. No one will ever decide as Lucifer did to go down the path of rebellion, because Jesus' nail-scarred hands and feet will ever be a reminder to the universe of what rebellion cost God...
..."affliction shall not rise up the second time."
It's not the fat animal, it's the heart of the one who presents the offering. God never needed animal sacrifice, this was for the people. He wanted their clean hearts.
Believe the Bible word for word. If the Bible wanted to say that it smelled "really bad" it would have said those exact words.
I know what is the mainstream view on Jesus Christ' crucifixion. I reject that. Maybe its only redeeming quality is that it attracts people to the faith; even if they are attracted for the wrong reasons (pity for Jesus Christ), it is still (somehow) better to have this kind of faith than be a direct enemy of God. I get chills down my spine when I think of the fate of the latter.
Never forget the sweet smelling savor. Don't try to explain it.
No way was Jesus "sweet smelling" when He hung on the Cross -- covered in blood and sweat and spit and dirt after having spent the night in a pit habited by criminals and the filth which no doubt abounded in such a place. It should be immediately obvious to anyone, I think, that Paul is using symbolic language in Ephesians 5:2 KJV
As I said, God in the OT referred to stinking, burning fat as "sweet smelling" because of what it represented - the end of sin. In Psalms 73, David lamented how the saints suffer while the wicked seem to prosper until "I entered into the sanctuary" and finally "understood their end" -- next to the sacrificial lamb, he obviously saw "the fat thereof" being burned on the altar. "Him Who knew no sin became sin for us" is why His sacrifice is so sweet a savor to us.
