Please note I have not included phrases like “Day of the Lord’s wrath” or “Day of the Lord’s anger” even though it is highly likely based on the context to be referring to the Day of the Lord. I have 25 verses here from both the Old and New Testament, every example of the use of “The Day of the Lord” in the King James Version. On the other hand I did include the use of “The Day of our Lord” from the New Testament.
Blameless in the day of our Lord
Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1Cor 1:8
The day of the Lord is the day the Lord returns from his journey and will give each man according to his work. The NT ministry has the burden so that we could all be blameless on that day. We have to give account of ourselves, what have we done with the talent the Lord gave us to invest?
To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Cor. 5:5
We all have had this experience, not just this man in Corinth. Life is a humbling experience that causes us to repent and turn to the Lord so that our spirit could be saved. There is no promise that your flesh will be saved.
As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus. 2Cor 1:14
In this age there are those who claim the word of God as theirs, they claim the Apostle’s as theirs, well when we appear before the Judgement seat of Christ the apostles will claim us as theirs.
Comes as a thief in the night
For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 1Thess 5:2
Recently I told a few people that Santa Claus comes as a thief in the night, breaking and entering your house when everyone is asleep. They argued that this is not true because a thief steals your money whereas Santa leaves gifts! Really? Santa leaves gifts? Are you sure it wasn’t your parents who were pressured into buying you junk and giving Santa credit? How slick is that? The story about Santa is not true, however the story about Jesus coming at the end of the age to rapture the first fruits in the twinkling of an eye and this rapture will be like a thief coming in the night for all those left behind, that story is true.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 2Pet 3:10
This verse is where people equate the “Day of the Lord” with the “end of the world”. This is true, there will be a new heaven and a new earth, and yes all these things will be burned up. If there were a book called “The Day of the Lord” this would be the last chapter, not the first twenty four chapters.
As you have done it will be done to you
For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. Obadiah 1:15
Jesus gave us the golden rule, to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Well, when He returns we will be judged according to this rule. The Lord told a story about a king that rented out his vineyard in exchange for a portion of the produce. However, the people who were “renting” the vineyard didn’t pay and instead rebelled against him even killing His son. So He came and destroyed those people and then gave the vineyard to those who would pay the rent. That is the “day of the Lord”. He isn’t burning down the vineyard, that would be stupid.
