I do sorta now what the difference between liking and loving someone but I would really like to hear from you. So please post your opinion :)

liking is just an outer feelings with condition...lovin is by accepting the person of who he is...no matter what...

So liking is evil according to some people, because you want something back for it. And that is against the great commandment which Jesus said.

hey, love wants and expects something back from it too. They are talking about unconditional love, but I really don't think it exists. If someone loves you, or you love them, you will always expect to do something for them or get something from them. Without this give and take, there is no relationship!

that definition of 'liking' is just a person/some peoples interpretation or view of it... it is not fact nor law... just an opinion. I don't understand what exactly you all are referring to by expecting back something for liking someone.

i think i agree with snail on the unconditional love thing. even tho i believe i love my children unconditionally and i could see no end to it on this earth... i think in comparison to Gods love which was the concept behind unconditional love, it doesn't hold a candle.

Here's a couple of thoughts that probably support what most of you are saying.

Many of us use the term 'like' instead of 'love' because we have reservations about the person and we do not want to make ourselves vulnerable. It's the fear that if we 'love' someone, they will hold us to that love, or even try to manipulate us, when we do not really know them that well. When we 'love' someone, we feel responsible to them, but if we only 'like' them, we don't feel that responsibility. When we ' love' someone it always requires some form of commitment with a family member, a close friend or a member of the opposite sex. We protect ourselves with 'liking' someone but we become vulnerable to those we 'love'. Vulnerable means to be wounded or disappointed.

LOve is commitment, it is not an emotion! It is 1 Cor 13.

Like, well thats the emotion, I like ice cream, chocolate doesn't mean I love it.

I'm not completely sure if you're wanting a definition of when a person likes someone and when a person loves someone or if you want an identifying factor of when you just like the person or when you truly love the person.

you can tell if you like a person pretty soon after meeting them..love on the other hand takes time

Like - Self gratifying, getting what you want
Love - Self sacrifice, giving what the other person wants

My opinion anyway.....

I LOVE my children! Adore them acctually.

BUT....

.....I don't always like them. (they can be naughty, and ornery, and pick on each other and sometimes destroy my last sane nerve) :)

So, with that being said....and those behaviors from them....nothing...absoLUTEly nothing would break down my love for them.

(just my humble little thoughts on the matter :))

What I would like to know is how can I tell if a lady likes me, or if they are just being nice. That has been somehting I never could figure out.

haha me either whiteknite but when a guy "likes" me.

to everyone: I would like to to maybe define Love and define like and explain when you use those words.. I am unsure what like mean as in when you like someone or something but i do have a good idea of what love is.

(in the romantic sense of like and love)

I think like shows interest...love shows intent and/or commitment to have something exclusive.

Funny thing. At work once I wrote "I love Ryan" on something. A co-worker said "How do you know that you love him? How do you know you're not just infatuated?" I said "I know I love him. I love him like I love no other. It was love at first sight and I will love him for the rest of my life." Well, all that I was saying was very true. Too bad another co-worker cut me off and told her "Ryan is her baby nephew."

However, although there is nothing like a love for a child, that's not what we're talking about. I'd say there is a difference between liking someone, loving someone and being IN love with someone. See, I've loved every guy I ever dated. But I loved them no more than I would a good guy friend. That's what the Greek Bible called philios... if I'm not mistaken. But I think I am. Does anyone remember what the Greek word is for brotherly love? But the romantic love is eros, which I have only felt for one guy. I made the transition from philos for him to eros about 3 years after I started liking him. The best way that I can define that transition felt like is this: he lived really far away and whenever I had to leave him, it was something that was just so... I don't know, it just kind of left me in a bad mood. But, I remember the first time I drove away from his town when I was in love with him. I mean, it was really really hard and I probably cried a lot. But ultimately I was really happy. Deliriously happy. Driving away from him was very painful, but I was so in love with him and he made me so happy, and I just couldn't help but be happy. Like, I felt like it was the beginning of something very wonderful, so that's why I was happy.

Anyway, i have to go.
