So now that the part of life where you have to not dress to impress but to dress to not displease has come knocking on my door.

Have any of you other hags on here been giving these inevitable facts any thoughts?

Pushing 50 may no longer be the time for leather jackets and jeans? Right?

Maybe the traditional grandma style would be more appropriate? Strolling elegantly down the sidewalk instead of revving the motorcycle? Tea instead of Bourbon? Setting a better example for my grandkids? Their mother doesn’t like it when they say that they wanna be like grandma lol.

I don't think age should be a factor in fashion. Nowadays women in their fifties and older wear fitting clothes, style hair, wear colorful eye shadow, etc (think politicians, wives of politicians, actresses, etc.). You can still age gracefully this way. That said, as I have grown older I care more about comfort and that kind of decides my fashion. The trick is not act like you are younger or be ashamed of your age, like older people in the party scene can be considered immature.

I guess I need a Queen Elizabeth outfit for riding my motorcycle from now on. Do you by any chance know where they sell motorcycle helmets looking like her headscarf?😂

Well if your own daughter doesn't like it when her kids say they want to be like you... Maybe it's time to settle down. It happens to the best of us eventually.

If I had a son, and he had a son, and my son didn't want his son to be like me, that would make me worry about one of two things. Either how I'm living, or how I raised such a son that doesn't like my good lifestyle. Either I raised him wrong or he's raising his son wrong.

It’s because I’m not available for her at all times, but this is not the 50s where grandmothers were at home 24/7 lol.

Honestly, your current style sounds good. If it looks good on you and fits your personality, why would your daughter be displeased with it?

Would you be happy wearing clothes that were meant for someone else with a different personality? I don't think you will be happy in such an outfit.

Just do what sounds good for you.

Do you know why that has changed since the 50s for gramdmas? Usually this topic has been more on mothers (they are home less because they are working). Do you think it is because more are working late, or more so they don't want to deal with grandchildren all the time.

I’m a naval officer so it’s not like I can be at the ready for her at all times. But I’m retiring soon so then she will have it her way, or at least a wee bit more her way.

I have read that some grandparents don't want to be "used" for babysitting.

lol, don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with them, but I can’t just be the on call baby sitter every time she or her husband is busy with the jobs they chose to do.

I feel blessed to be in a stage of life where I can pretty much wear what I want most days -- and for me, all my life, my outfit of choice has always been a cartoon t-shirt and jeans or joggers.

I don't feel a need to impress anyone, only a desire to dress appropriately if I'm going to an event or place that requires something different.

I have a friend who's getting married next year; I pulled out the one dress I own, from like almost 20 years ago, and I'm so thankful I can still get into it. Yeah, I've put on a few pounds, but at least I'm in a range where I don't have to shop for or spend money on another dress, because you can see how often I wear them! (Ironically, the shoes I had to go with it, which are just as old, are about kaput, so I guess I WILL have to shell out for some new kicks.)

The cartoon t-shirts I wear also draw in an interesting diversity of people -- most of the characters are from the 80's (Transformers, Super Mario Bros. original, etc.) so sometimes I'll get comments from people who must be of "a certain age" because they know who they are, or young folk who are cosplayers and drawn to all kinds of animated characters.

A dental hygienist I went to told me she loved seeing what t-shirt I would wear to each visit, because she said they made her smile the rest of the day(like the one making fun of a T-rex dinosaur's short, tiny arms, because T-rex's can't do pushups.) This was a big motivator for me, knowing my quirky choices can cheer someone up.

However, there is a dark side of me somewhere hidden in a very elegant wardrobe cabinet that wishes she could be a bit of an Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly or Princess Diana. There is a grocery store I go to often that has a jewelry counter, and I like glancing at the window. I love anything shiny, sparkly, and blingy, but I'd never spend money on those things (and if I ever did, I'd buy imitation stones.)

I couldn't help but ask God why He made me to love such fancy things, when I'm really very plain and obviously dress down way too much to ever wear such things. To fill my need for sparkles, I often put a bit of glitter dust on my arms or in my hair, but that's as fancy as I get.

Maybe someday my inner elegant wanna be will make it to the forefront, but right now my clothes are too busy saying, "I am forever a kid at heart!" to ever let her shine.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but I don't like it when parents expect grandparents to automatically be free babysitters and partial providers for the grandkids.

Sure, it's great if the grandparents make that choice.

But I don't agree with feeling entitled to another person's life and dictating how they're going to spend it, especially with so many older people having to continue working into their later years.

After all, they've already done their job -- they've raised their kids -- I just think it's unfair to think they should have to raise grandkids as well.

I think there's a difference between being a grandparent and being an add-on parent/provider, and I personally believe grandparents should be allowed to choose which one they want to be.

But that's just me.

From everything I've learned about you over the years and continue to learn, you have very much earned the right to dress in any which way you please!!!

I have always loved your spunk, and just because we get older, it doesn't mean we should have to lose that.

SOMEONE has to keep showing these youngin's how it's done!!

I have always admired people older than me who have never lost their pluckiness and sense of humor.

Thank you so much for your service, and you keep kickin' up the dust, wherever God may take you!

Remind me to go through my jewelry before you come visit and I'll probably have some stuff you can have if you want some sparklies. I've just got some stuff that is quite valuable and / or has sentimental value that I'd want to keep even though I hardly ever wear it.

Yes , my hubby has 3 grandchildren and twins on the way next year and he adores them but , he loves his own five daughters more , they r his kids , he brought them up and witnessed their births etc . My friend has two sons and she has cut them both out if her will in favour of one of her 3 grandchildren , one of her grandchildren inherits everything . Because she doesn't like her two daughters in law , she's punishing her son's by disinheriting them . I think that's awful . Hubby's five daughters r all very different to each other , different personalities and lifestyles etc and he does have a favourite but , they will never know who that is and they will all b left the same and he treats them all the same . He loves his grandchildren but his own children come before them .

I was in my local supermarket the other day , it's right next door to the local art college , and I noticed that I was wearing the same pants as one of the student girls in the queue . I felt a bit weird about it , I'm 58 and a UK size 14 , think that's a 10 in USA . So I went home and asked hubby , should I start buying my clothes from a different shop ? A more mature outlet ? He went crazy ! No was his definitive reply . Make up isn't a thing for me as I only wear it on special occasions , apart from my eyebrows 😖 I basically don't have a left one and only a very fine right one so I have to ' enhance ' them a bit . Mentally I feel as light as a feather and as free as a bird , better than ever but physically I feel about 90 😞 aches and pains and stiffness from my neck to my toes all day every day for decades . But my heart is merry and I'm sane and cheerful and up and about , able to do all the things that I have to every day and all of this is totally down to God's love and mercy . Only He gets me out of bed every day with a smile on my face and a spring in my step ❤️
